20、 of severalproperties, including: plasticity, consistency, cohesion,adhesion, water retentivity, setting characteristics, and itscapacity to remain satisfactory under the influence of masonryunit suction and ambient environmental conditions. Many ofthese properties have defied exact laboratory measu
21、rement.The mason can best assess workability by observing theresponse of the mortar to the trowel and the masonry unit. Forfurther discussion on workability, see the Appendix of Speci-fication C270.4. Classification4.1 Admixtures are classified by their effect on the perfor-mance characteristics of
22、conventional masonry mortars. Ad-mixed mortars are classified by their modified properties, ascompared to a reference mortar. Chemical Composition6.1 The admixture shall not react adversely with embed
29、dedor attached materials common to masonry.NOTE 3Currently, there is no standard test method for determining thecorrosion potential of masonry mortars toward embedded and attachedmaterials. Nonetheless, the admixture shall not be offered for sale if themanufacturer has evidence that the admixture do
30、es react adversely withembedded or attached materials common to masonry.6.2 At the maximum recommended dosage, the mortaradmixture shall add not more than 65 ppm (0.0065 %) water-soluble chloride, or 90 ppm (0.0090 %) acid-soluble chlorideto the mortars overall chloride content as determined bytesti
31、ng of the reference and admixed mortars in accordancewith 9.1.1.7. Physical Properties7.1 All modified masonry mortars shall comply with theproperty specification requirements of Specification C270.Inaddition, the admixed mortars shall conform to all of thespecific classification requirements in Tab
32、le 1 for which theadmixture is obtaining qualification. Unless more specimensare required by a specific test method, a minimum of threespecimens shall be tested and the results averaged. These resultaverages shall meet the requirements of this section.7.2 Admixture compliance tests shall be the resp
33、onsibilityof the manufacturer of the admixture. These compliance testsC1384 172shall be completed within the past five (5) years and prior toany admixture composition change.8. Mortar Types and Proportions8.1 Design the reference mortar to be a specific type ofcement/lime, mortar cement, or masonry
34、cement mortar inconformance with the proportion specification of SpecificationC270 except that the aggregate ratio shall be fixed at threetimes the sum of the separate volumes of cementitious mate-rials. In addition, the aggregate shall meet the requirements in5.3.8.2 The corresponding admixed morta
35、rs shall have the samecomposition as the reference mortars but also shall include theadmixture, and the water content shall be adjusted to yield theflow or penetration appropriate for each test method. Theadmixture dosage rate, time of addition, and mixing sequenceshall follow the manufacturers reco
36、mmendations.8.3 A complete set of tests shall be run for all applicablecement/lime, mortar cement, and masonry cement types forwhich the admixture is to be qualified.9. Test Methods9.1 For all required tests, test both the reference mortar andthe admixed mortar in accordance with the following testm
37、ethods:9.1.1 Soluble Chloride ContentPrepare six mortar cubesin accordance with the specimen preparation section of TestMethod C1403 including the drying procedure, except thatmortar proportions shall be as specified in Section 8 andaggregates shall be as specified in 5.3. After 28 days of age,deter
38、mine the water-soluble chloride content of three cubes, aspercent chloride by mass of mortar, in accordance with TestMethod C1218/C1218M except increase the sample size to 15g instead of the 10 g specified in Test Method C1218/C1218M.Determine the acid-soluble chloride content of the other threecube
