The use of results from testing of tileextracted from masonry structures for determining confor-mance or nonconformance to the property requirements (Sec-tion 5) of this specification is beyond the scope of this standard.1.3 Tile covered by this specification a
4、re manufactured fromclay, shale, or similar naturally occurring substances andsubjected to a heat treatment at elevated temperatures (firing).The heat treatment must develop sufficient fired bond betweenthe particulate constituents to provide the strength and dura-bility requirements of this specifi

Classification4.1 Three grades of screen tile, based on relative durability,are covered as follows:NOTE 1Sc
9、reen walls present many more exposed surfaces than otherbrick or tile walls, the question of durability and selection of grade may bemore critical in the screen walls. For this reason, these requirements aremore conservative than for brick.4.1.1 Grade SEScreen tile exhibiting a uniformly highresista
10、nce to disintegration by weathering or by freezing orthawing in the presence of moisture.4.1.2 Grade MEScreen tile exhibiting a moderate andsomewhat nonuniform resistance to weathering. Grade ME tileexhibit good durability in areas of mild to moderate exposurebut may not be adequate for severe expos
11、ures.4.1.3 Grade NEScreen tile for interior use (no exposure torain or freezing).4.1.4 When the grade is not specified, the requirements forGrade ME shall govern.4.1.5 Grade SE tile may be accepted in lieu of Grades MEor NE. Grade ME tile may be accepted in lieu of Grade NE.4.2 Two types of screen t
12、ile, based on dimensionaltolerances, are covered as follows:4.2.1 Type STXScreen tile having a high degree of me-chanical perfection and minimum size variation.4.2.2 Type STAScreen tile exhibiting characteristic archi-tectural effects resulting from a larger degree of size variationthan obtainable w

Dimensions and Permissible Variations6.1 The dimensions of screen tile units shall be specified bythe purchaser.NOTE 2Since screen tile are available in numerous sizes and shapes,the purchaser must specify these items. All sizes and shapes are notnecessarily
18、available in all parts of the United States. Therefore, thespecifier should ascertain local availability before specifying a particularunit size or pattern.6.2 No screen tile shall have greater dimensional variationthan that permitted in Table 2.7. Finish and Appearance7.1 All tile shall be reasonab
19、ly free from laminations andfrom defects that impair the placement, strength, or perma-nence of the construction.7.2 Tile surfaces shall be smooth, scored, combed, orroughened as specified by the purchaser.7.3 Color, texture, and pattern shall be specified by thepurchaser. The texture and color rang
20、e that will be visible in thefinished wall shall conform to an approved sample of at leastfour representative units.NOTE 3Tile colors vary with clay type and degree of burning. Colordoes not indicate tile classification unless it has been related to absorptionand strength by tests.Because a multitud
21、e of individual unit patterns and wall patterns areavailable, screen-wall strength in every direction may not be related to thecompressive strength of individual units. Designers are cautioned toinvestigate each wall design thoroughly and to provide sufficient expan-sion and pressure-relieving joint
22、s to eliminate induced forces that mightcreate critical stresses in screen-wall units.8. Optional Requirements8.1 If the purchaser desires closer dimensional tolerances,restrictions on chippage or roughness, or other requirementsnot specifically contained in this specification, he must so statein a
