Terminology3.1 Definitions:NOTE 1These definitions other than specific to the standard are takenfrom UL 1449, ANSI/IEEE C62.41, and MIL-STD 1399 to provide forharmonization of terms.3.1.1 combination wave, na surge delivered by an instru-ment that h
9、as the inherent capability of applying a 1.2/50-svoltage wave across an open circuit and delivering an 8/20-scurrent wave into a short circuit. The exact wave that isdelivered is determined by the instantaneous impedance towhich the combination wave is applied. (Also called combi-nation voltage/curr
10、ent surge or combination V/I surge.)3.1.2 crest (peak) value (of a wave, surge or impulse),nthe maximum value that a wave, surge, or impulse attains.3.1.3 electric power source, nthe electric power that issupplied for testing.3.1.4 electric power system ground, nground is a plane orsurface used by t
11、he electric power system as a commonreference to establish zero potential. Usually, this surface is themetallic hull of the ship. On a nonmetallic hull ship, a specialground system is installed for this purpose.3.1.5 follow (power) current, nthe current from the con-nected power source that flows th
12、rough a surge protectivedevice following the passage of discharge current.3.1.6 frequency tolerance, nfrequency tolerance is themaximum permitted departure from nominal frequency duringnormal operation, excluding transient and cyclic frequencyvariations. This includes variations such as those caused

18、urge suppressor, andtypically will rise to a maximum value in a few millisecondsand decay to rated value in several milliseconds to severalseconds.3.1.8 leakage current, nline current drawn, either line-to-line or line-to-ground, by the suppressor when operated at themaximum continuous operating vol
19、tage.3.1.9 maximum continuous operating voltage, nmaximumsinusoidal rms voltage which may be continuously appliedwithout degradation or deleterious effects.3.1.10 measured limiting voltage, nthe crest (peak) valueof the voltage measured at the leads, terminals, receptaclecontacts and the like, inten
20、ded for connection to the load(s) tobe protected, and resulting from application of a specifiedsurge.3.1.11 nominal frequency, nthe nominal frequency is thedesignated frequency in Hz.3.1.12 nominal system voltage, na nominal value assignedto designate a system of a given voltage class in accordancew
21、ith ANSI/IEEE C84.1. For the purpose of this standard,nominal system voltages are 120, 208, 240, and 480 vac. Allvoltages in this standard are root-mean-square (rms) unlessstated otherwise. 23、 voltage minus suppressionvoltage rating) across the suppressor output terminals duringinitial response to a voltage spike.3.1.15 power interface, nthe electrical points where thesurge suppression device is electrically connected to the acpower system.3.1.16 rated rms voltage (varistor), nmaximum co
24、ntinu-ous sinusoidal rms voltage which may be applied to a varistor.3.1.17 response time (varistor), nthe time between thepoint at which the wave exceeds the voltage protection level(suppression voltage rating) and the peak of the voltageovershoot. For the purpose of this definition, voltage protect
25、ionlevel is defined with an 8/20-s current waveform of the peakcurrent amplitude as the waveform used for this response time.3.1.18 secondary surge arrestor, na surge protector deviceacceptable ahead of the service entrance equipment on circuitsnot exceeding 1000-V rms (location category C as descri
26、bed inANSI/IEEE C62.41).3.1.19 surge, na transient overvoltage superimposed onthe ac power circuit. A voltage surge is generally one in whichthe superposition of the surge and normal power frequencyvoltage involves peak voltage levels of twice or more thenormal voltage of the ac power system and gen
27、erally lastingnot more than one-half period of the nominal system voltagewaveform.3.1.20 surge protective device (SPD), na protective devicecomposed of any combination of linear or non-linear circuitelements and intended for limiting surge voltages on equip-ment by diverting or limiting surge curren
28、t; it prevents contin-ued flow of follow (power) current and is capable of repeatingthese functions as specified.3.1.21 temporary overvoltage (TOV), na voltage swellfrom a sudden change in voltage which goes outside thevoltage tolerance limits but does not exceed 120 % of nominalsystem voltage and r
29、eturns to and remains within these limitswithin 2 s after the initiation of the disturbance.3.1.22 transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS), nasurge protective device intended for connection electrically onthe load side of the main overcurrent protection in circuits notexceeding 600 V. 30、tegories A and B as described inANSI/IEEE C62.41.)3.1.23 two-port transient voltage surge suppressor, naTVSS having one set of electrical connections (terminals, leadsand the like) intended for connection to the ac power circuitand one or more separate sets of electrical connections(terminals, leads
31、, outlet receptacles, and so forth) intended forconnecting the load(s) to be protected. This device is series-connected such that load current will flow through the transientvoltage surge suppressor.3.1.24 voltage drop, nvoltage differential measured frominput terminals to output terminals under con
32、ditions of ratedload current for two-port surge suppressors.3.1.25 voltage protection level, na suppression rating (orratings) in volts or kilovolts, selected by the manufacturer thatis based on the measured limiting voltage determined duringsurge testing.Also referred to as the suppression voltage
33、rating.3.1.26 voltage spike, na voltage spike is a voltage changeof very short duration (100 s to12 cycle). The standard1.2/50-s lightning impulse, as defined byANSI/IEEE Std 4, isthe characteristic voltage spike used for test purposes.3.1.27 voltage tolerance, nvoltage tolerance is the maxi-mum per
34、mitted departure from nominal system voltage duringnormal operation, excluding transient voltage variations. Volt-age tolerance includes variations such as those caused by loadchanges, switchboard meter error, and drift. Unless otherwisespecified, voltage tolerance shall be considered to be 610 % of

Classification4.1 Surge suppressors covered in this specification shall beclassified by class and type.4.2 The two classes of surge suppressors covered in thisspecification are based on and reflect ANSI/IEEE C62.41locations.4.2.1 Class ASurge suppressor associated with long
36、 cir-cuit branch that being greater than 30-ft cable distance from thedistribution panel and usually installed as a series-connectedTVSS at the distribution system receptacle (wall outlet).4.2.2 Class BSurge suppressor for short branch circuit,either installed at loads within 30-ft cable distance fr
37、om thecircuit breaker distribution panel or within the distributionpanel.F1507 99 (2017)24.3 Type designations for surge suppressors covered in thisspecification are as follows:4.3.1 Type I; Permanent Connected TypeA suppressordesigned for hard-wired or panel-mount applications. This typesurge suppr
38、essor is the only one-port-type TVSS.4.3.2 Type II; Plug-In TypeA suppressor provided withblades for direct connection at a receptacle and with integraloutput receptacle(s). By nature of its design, a plug-in suppres-sor is inserted into the circuit as a series connection.4.3.3 Type III; Cord-Connec
39、ted TypeA suppressor that isconnected to a receptacle through a flexible cord that ispermanently attached to the suppressor device. The cord shallbe in accordance with requirements of UL 1449. Cord-connected devices shall not have means for permanent mount-ing.4.3.4 Type IV; Power Director (Power Ce
40、nter) TypeAsuppressor unit with two-pole main circuit breaker, a masterswitch for controlling all receptacle outlets, and individualswitches for controlling all outlets.5. Grounding shall be accomplished in accordancewith the requirements of UL 1449.7.
