、tured from cold rolled strips shall be manufactured from strip complying with the requirements of grade70 or grade80 range of BS1449-1 or BS S513. Circlips not manufactured from strip should utilize similar material which will ensure that the circlips are capable of complying with the test requireme
、nts of clause9. 5 Form, dimensions and tolerances 5.1 General. The form, dimensions and tolerances of internal and external circlips shall be as given in Table 2 and Table 3 and in accordance with5.2 to5.7 (see also clause10). 5.2 Holes (or slots). Each end of each circlip shall have a hole (or, in
、the case of external circlips, a hole or a slot) in order to facilitate assembly by use of circlip pliers. The holes (or slots) shall be so positioned that, when the circlip is fitted in a groove of appropriate dimensions, the hole (or slot) shall be clear of the external diameter of the shaft or, i
、n the case of internal circlips, clear of the internal diameter of the bore. The diameter of the holes (or width of slots) shall be as given in Table 2 and Table 3 and sufficient material shall be retained around each hole (or on either side of each slot) to ensure that no permanent distortion of th
、e circlip ends shall result when circlip pliers are applied during assembly of the circlip under normal conditions. 5.3 Lugs. Circlips up to and including150mm designating size shall have integrally formed lugs. The profile of the lug may vary at the discretion of the manufacturer provided that the
、following conditions are met. a) External circlips. When passed over a shaft of the maximum diameter as given in Table 2, the circlip shall be capable of passing through the clearance diameter C 1 . b) Internal circlips. When passed through a bore of the minimum diameter as given in Table 3, thecirc
、lip shall be capable of passing over the clearance diameter C 1 . 5.4 Lug fillet. A fillet of minimum radius equal to the maximum thickness T of the circlip shall be formed adjacent to each lug. The fillet shall blend smoothly with the lug profile and with the wing depth. At no point around the cont
、our shall the fillet undercut either the lug profile or the wing (seeFigure 1). 5.5 Tolerance on radial flatness. Departures from radial flatness (see3.2) shall be not greater than the values stated in10.4.2. 5.6 Tolerance for helix. Departures from spiral flatness (see3.3) shall be not greater than
、 the values stated in10.4.3. 5.7 Tolerance on thickness. Thickness tolerances shall be inclusive of the thickness of the finish applied. 6 Heat treatment and hardness Circlips shall be austempered or hardened and tempered in accordance with the hardness ranges given in Table 1. Figure 2 Radial flatn
、ess error d-T Figure 3 Spiral flatness error (helical pitch)BSSP166:1982 BSI 02-2000 3 Table 1 Hardness ranges Hydrogen de-embrittlement treatment shall be carried out after phosphating in accordance with clause8. 7 Finish The circlips shall be completely free of burrs and scale, and no cracks, pitt
、ing or other surface defects shall be present. In addition, particular attention shall be paid to the “fitting corners” of the circlips such that no evidence of sharp edges or defects which could produce “stress-raisers” is present. NOTEIt is recommended that in order to achieve these requirements,
、barrelling with aluminium oxide chippings or similar agent or process be used. Examination shall be made prior to phosphating at a minimum magnification of 10. 8 Protective treatment 8.1 The circlips shall be phosphated in accordance with DEF STAN0311, class1, and de-embrittled at180 C to200 C for n
、ot less than18h beginning within30min of completing the phosphating treatment. 8.2 Temporary anti-corrosion oil PX-4 in accordance with DEF STAN8034 shall be applied immediately following de-embrittlement. 9 Tests 9.1 General. Each circlip shall comply with the requirements of the tests described in
、9.2 to9.5. 9.2 Permanent set and grip. The circlips shall grip firmly on the groove diameters, minima for external circlips and maxima for internal circlips, given in Table 2 and Table 3 after having been passed three times over a shaft (for the external type) or through a bore (for the internal typ
、e) which are1% greater than the shaft nominal diameter or1% less than the bore nominal diameter, respectively. The circlips shall be relaxed between each phase of the test. NOTEBy “grip firmly” it is meant that with the shaft or bore positioned vertically the circlip will remain correctly in positio
、n on the groove diameter, unaided and under its own weight. Provision should be made to ensure that at all times during the test the circlip is normal to the axis of the test shaft or test bore as applicable. 9.3 Bend and fracture test. The circlip shall be positioned so that it is gripped across th
、e beam section, as shown in Figure 4. The circlip shall then be bent through30 by repeated light hammer blows around a test block of radius equal to the maximum thickness of the circlip, following which, there shall be no visible signs of fracture, cracks or similar defects. The circlip shall then b
、e further bent until fracture occurs, following which examination of the fracture shall reveal a uniform grain structure with no sign of laminations or other defects. 9.4 Hardness. Tests shall be carried out in accordance with BS891-1 using a machine verified in accordance with BS891-2 for the Rockw
、ell hardness values or in accordance with BS427-1 using a machine verified in accordance with BS427-2 for the Vickers hardness values. The hardness of each circlip shall be within the appropriate range as given in Table 1. 9.5 Stress embrittlement (see clause8). After de-embrittlement treatment, ext
、ernal circlips shall be stressed by placing them for a period of24h on a shaft of appropriate nominal diameter. Internal circlips shall be stressed by placing them for a period of24h in a bore of appropriate nominal diameter. After release, the circlips, under a magnification of at least 10, shall s
