Aggregate shall have a hardness of 6 or greater onthe Mohs hardness scale.2.2.2.2 Total evaporable moisture content of aggregateshall be determined in accorda

、s to which epoxies are to be appliedshall be newly prepared substrate free of loose and unsoundmaterials and contamination that affect cure or adhesion ofepoxy. Prepare surfaces by mechanical abrasion.3.1.2 Mechanical abrasionUse abrasive blasting, shot-blasting, or other approved means.3.2Evaluate

、surface before coating application3.2.1 Evaluate all prepared concrete surfaces before applica-tion of coating to ensure that requirements of Article 3.2 are met.3.2.2 Tensile strength of concrete surface shall have anaverage minimum pulloff strength of 1.72 MPa in accordancewith ASTM C1583M.3.2.2.1

、 Apply test patches of the skid-resistant coating toprepared concrete surfaces at the rate of one per span or400 m2, whichever is smaller. An evaluation shall be theaverage of three individual tests at each test patch location.3.2.2.2 The tensile adhesion evaluation shall not beperformed at surface

、temperatures above 27C.3.2.2.3 Tests should be repeated when results are not afailure of concrete in 50% or more of the test area. Repeatedfailures in adhesion, or cohesion in adhesive, indicateimproper cleaning of concrete, incorrect adhesive, or faultyadhesive application techniques.3.2.2.4 If tes

、t strength is less than 1.72 MPa after severaltests, the following options are recommended, unlessotherwise specified:Additional surface preparation.Do not place overlay.Replace concrete.Use an alternative system.3.2.3 The surface shall be free of any deleterious materialssuch as laitance, curing co

、mpounds, dust, dirt, and oil, andmaterials resulting from surface preparation, as specified inArticle 3.1, shall be removed.3.2.4 All concrete surfaces shall be dry as defined inParagraph 3.2.5 unless a water-insensitive coating is used.Surface temperature shall be at least 13C to permit wettingof t

、he concrete surface by epoxy coating, unless otherwisespecified or recommended by manufacturer.3.2.5 Evaluate moisture content for concrete by deter-mining if moisture will collect at bond lines betweenconcrete and epoxy coating before epoxy has cured. Thismay be accomplished by taping a 1.22 x 1.22

、 m polyethylenesheet to concrete surface in accordance with ASTM D4263. Ifmoisture collects on underside of polyethylene sheet earlier thanthe time required for curing of epoxy according to the ContractDocuments, then allow concrete to dry sufficiently to preventthe possibility of moisture between t

、ents with amechanical mixer to a uniform and homogeneous mixture.Mix small batches (up to 0.95 L) by use of spatulas, paletteknives, or similar devices. The proportioning and mixingratio of epoxy shall be as specified by the manufacturer andshall not be modified.3.4Coating application3.4.1 Apply epo

、xy coating to the concrete surface byroller, squeegee, or spray equipment. Apply epoxy coating tothe entire surface at a minimum uniform coverage rate of1.6 L/m2, unless otherwise specified.3.4.2 Apply skid-resistant aggregate while the coating isstill fluid at the minimum rate of 6.49 kg/m2, unless

、 other-wise specified.3.4.3 Protect joints from exposure to the coating materials.3.5Field quality control3.5.1 Pulloff strength of cured skid-resistant surface toconcrete shall meet requirements of Paragraph 3.2.2. Thefailure shall be cohesive within concrete. There shall be nofailures in adhesion.

、3.5.2 If test results do not meet the required average 1.72 MPapulloff strength, check surface preparation procedures andrepeat tests. If test results still do not meet the requiredaverage 1.72 MPa pulloff strength, check manufacturersbatching, mixing, placing, and curing requirements andrepeat test

、 until required pulloff strength is achieved, unlessotherwise permitted.3.6Cleanup3.6.1 Protect concrete surfaces against spillage beyond thelimits of surface receiving coating.3.6.2 Immediately remove any epoxy resin applied orspilled beyond desired areas. Perform cleanup with materialdesignated by
