The rating system used will be as indicated by NTPEP procedures. Durability readings will be evaluated subjectively on a scale of “0” to “10,” where “0” means t

Condition in Containers: 5.3.1. The paint shall show no curdling, livering, caking, lumps, skins, or color

、 separation. Any settling that has occurred in containers opened within 45 days after receipt must be able to be mixed to a smooth homogeneous state within 5 min. 5.3.2. This requirement applies both to test samples that are mixed with spatulas and to paint in 275-gal intermediate bulk containers th

、at are mixed with air-driven industrial mixers. 5.4. SkinningThe paint shall not skin within 48 h in a three-quarter-filled, tightly closed quart container. 5.5. Heat Stability: 5.5.1. Put 450 mL of paint in a 473-mL (1-pt) lined container, close the container, seal it with tape, and put it in an ov

、en maintained at 60 1C for 1 week. 5.5.2. Equilibrate the paint at 25 1C and mix thoroughly with gentle stirring. 5.5.3. Perform the consistency test as specified in ASTM D562. 5.5.4. Consistency shall not vary more than 5 KU from the initial viscosity. 5.6. FreezeThaw Stability: 5.6.1. Put 450 mL o

、f paint in a 473-mL (1-pt) lined container; close the container, invert, and place in a chamber maintained at 10 1C. 5.6.2. Remove the container after 16 h and maintain at 25 1C for 8 h. 5.6.3. Repeat this procedure four more times. 5.6.4. At the completion of the freezethaw cycles, equilibrate the

、paint at 25 1C, mix thoroughly with gentle stirring, and examine for smoothness and uniformity. 5.6.5. Repeat the consistency tests as specified in ASTM D562. 5.6.6. Consistency shall not vary more than 5 KU. 5.6.7. The paint shall show no evidence of coagulation or breaking of the emulsion. 5.7. No

、-Track Time (Field): 5.7.1. The reflectorized line, when applied at 15 1 mil wet film thickness with glass spheres applied at a rate of 6 lb/gal of paint, shall have a no-track time of 90 s or less with a maximum paint temperature at the guns of 54C. 5.7.2. The maximum no-track time shall not be exc

、eeded when the pavement temperature is between 10C and 50C with the relative humidity less than 70 percent and the pavement is dry. 5.7.3. The no-track time shall be determined by passing over an applied test line at approximately 30 degrees with a standard size passenger car or pickup truck. 5.7.4.

、 A line showing no visual deposition of the paint to the pavement surface when viewed from a distance of 15.2 m (50 ft) shall be considered as conforming to the dry-time requirements. 2016 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. All rights reserved. Duplication is

、a violation of applicable law.TS-4c MP 24-5 AASHTO 5.8. Alternate No-Track Time (Lab): 5.8.1. Fill the bottom of a Paul N. Gardner Co. test chamber, Model WEHTAB176 or equivalent, with 6 to 12 mm of water. 5.8.2. Close all ports and the door to allow equilibrating overnight. 5.8.3. By carefully open

、ing and closing the ports, establish a relative humidity of 90 3 percent inside the chamber. 5.8.4. Record temperatures and relative humidity inside and outside the chamber. 5.8.5. On clean glass, draw down two test panels of 15-mil wet film thickness using a drawdown blade. 5.8.6. Promptly place th

、e wet films in the test chamber and maintain the relative humidity of 90 3 percent. 5.8.7. Touch the films at 15-min intervals until the finger does not pick up wet paint. Then begin dry-through testing outside the chamber at 15-min intervals. 5.8.8. The film is dry through if it does not distort fr

、om a 90-degree thumb twist without pressure on the film. 5.8.9. Record temperatures, relative humidity, and times. Measure the dry thickness of the paint. Note 2It is recommended that a control or standard paint be tested every day that dry-through time tests are conducted. Note 3This method is base

、d upon ASTM D7539, Standard Practice for Us ing a Test Chamber for Humidity Conditioning of Test Panels of Pavement Marking Paints. Note that as per 8.1.4 there are best conditions for humidity and temperature as target environmental conditions. Understand that potential variations in the testing en

、vironment will introduce significant variations in the testing results. 5.9. Identification Testing: 5.9.1. The purchaser may utilize x-ray analysis, gas chromatography, infrared, or ultraviolet spectral analysis of the paint or its components to detect modifications of original formulation. 5.9.2.

、Evidence of adulteration or improper formulation shall be cause for rejection. 6. NTPEP TEST DECK EVALUATIONS 6.1. Manufacturers shall install test lines on both asphalt and cement concrete roadways on the NTPEP test deck in accordance with ASTM D713. Separate test lines shall be installed for each

、color of each material. Pavement markings installed on asphalt and cement concrete roadway surfaces will be evaluated in accordance with the NTPEP Pavement Marking Materials work plan (which references ASTM D713) and approved separately for each type and color based on the Test Deck specifications o

、f the user. 7. METHODS OF SAMPLING 7.1. The paint shall be sampled in accordance with the appropriate ASTM method. 2016 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. All rights reserved. Duplication is a violation of applicable law.TS-4c MP 24-6 AASHTO 8. PACKAGING AND M

、ARKING 8.1. The paint shall be delivered in such containers as may be specified in the contract. Each container shall bear a label with the following information shown thereon: name and address of manufacturer and contractor, shipping point, trade mark or trade name, waterborne paint, formula, numbe

、r of liters (gallons), date of manufacture and lot number, title and number of this specification, and color of paint. 9. APPROVALS 9.1. At the end of 1 year, the agency will evaluate the results of laboratory and test deck data. This information will be reviewed for each material by color and roadw

、ay surface to determine compliance with this specification. Approved paint formulas will remain active for a period of 4 years; afterwards the paint will need to be retested. 10. KEYWORDS 10.1. Pavement marking materials; traffic paint. 1This provisional standard was first published in 2014. 2016 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. All rights reserved. Duplication is a violation of applicable law.
