、rmation Recorded on Optical Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) Systems 3 Definitions This section contains definitions of terms that are used in this report which are essential to a sound understanding of the topic. Compact Disk Read-only Memory (CD ROM): CD ROM optical disks contain prerecorded informatio

、n that can be retrieved by users. They can be produced by a mastering process that results in the creation of a specified number of working copies, which have no recordable properties, to be distributed to end users. Some CD ROM systems facili- tate recording by the user without a mastering process.

、 header label: A machine readable record at the beginning of a digital data file that contains data for the identifica- tion of the file. optical disks: Optical disks are round computer storage media which permit the recording and/or retrieval of in- formation by optical processes, typically through

、 the use of lasers. Optical disks are recorded and/or read by specially-designed drives which function as computer 1 AIIM TR2L 91 peripheral devices. Optical disks and their associated drives are available in both read/write and read-only configurations. LOI12348 0500526 771 4.3 Manufacturers code A

、 code or lot number which identifies the material should be specified. optical disk cartridge: A plastic enclosure for read/write optical disks. Cartridges, which may be square or rectan- gular in shape, protect the round computer storage disks from contaminants and physical damage. They also facili

、- tate loading, unloading, and handling of read/write opti- cal disks. optical disk cartridge label(s): A physical label, not a file or header label, that is placed on the optical disk cartridge (see header label). optical disk cartridge packaging: The materials and wrap- pings used to provide prote

、ction for shipping and handling the optical disk cartridge. physical label): The printed label (or area on the optical disk cartridge where a printed label can be affixed) that is used to identify the optical disk. rewritable optical disks: Rewritable optical disks are con- sidered to be erasable. O

、riginal information recorded in a given area of a rewritable optical disk can be replaced with new information. Write-Once-Read-Many optical disks: Write-once-read- many (WORM) optical disks are intended for informa- tion that will not be altered or erased. Once information is recorded in a given ar

、ea of a write-once optical disk, that area cannot be reused. Write-once optical disks are popularly described as WORM disks-standing for Write- Once-Read-Many or Write-Once-Read-Mostly. 4 Recommendations for information to be placed on the optical disk cartridge packaging by the manufacturer or supp

、lier The optical disk cartridge packaging is the external con- tainer (wrapping) that the optical disk cartridge is placed in for shipping. 4.1 Product name The common trade name and/or terminology used to iden- tify the particular optical disk cartridge that is contained in the cartridge packaging,

、 e.g. Write-Once-Read-Mostly (WORM). The product name should be specified. 4.2 Dimensions The nominal outside diameter (size) of the optical disks should be specified, using both metric and inch units. 4.4 Company identification A company name or other identification of the manufac- turer or distrib

、utor which includes the address and zip code should be specified. 4.5 Date The manufacturing date of the media or its distribution should be specified. 4.6 Storage conditions Recommended storage conditions (e.g. suggested tempera- ture and relative humidity, among other items) should be specified (s

、ee Table 1). Some of the detailed information about storage conditions, operating conditions, and other environmental factors are covered in the standards that are listed in Table 1. Also, see Annex B for standardiza- tion projects that are underway to cover the test methods for media characteristic

、s. 4.7 Drive types Drives that the disk has been designed to operate with should be specified. 4.8 Format If the disk has been formatted, the type of format should be specified. It is recommended that the user follow a scheme for this type of identification. See Table 1 which lists the standards tha

、t cover optical disk formats. 4.9 Sides A single- or double-sided disk should be specified. 4.10 Nominal capacity The number of bytes that can be recorded on the disk by the user should be listed. The possibilities of defects and spare sector pre-assignments, that can change the total capacity that

、is available to the user, should be considered when stating the nominal capacity. NOTE - The trends to shorter wave lengths and higher recording densities will create a demand for expansion of existing media standards to incorporate the new capacities. The standards being drafted today will be under

、 pressure for modification to accommo- date such expansion in capacity in three to five years. 2 AIIM TR2L 9L m LO12348 0500527 608 m 4.11 Special handling conditions Instructions for handling the disk, such as not immersing it in water, etc. should be specified. 5 Recommendations for information to

、 be placed on the label of the optical disk cartridge by the user The optical disk cartridge is the container, Le., plastic enclosure for the optical disk. The cartridge should be square or rectangular. It protects the round optical disk from contaminants and physical damage. The optical disk cartri

、dge facilitates loading and unload- ing the optical disk from its drive. It also allows other types of handling by the user or a robotic disk changer (such as in an optical disk jukebox) for the optical disks. The label on the optical disk cartridge can be a paper label material or a recessed area w

、hich will accommodate user- written information. The information in sections 5.1 and 5.2 should be written on the optical disk cartridge label. 5.1 User identification The organization or user identification should be specified. 5.2 Format If the disk has been formatted, the type of format should be

、 specified on the label. It is recommended that the user follow a scheme for this type of identification. See Table 1 which lists the standards (under “Code”) for optical disk formats. The “Code”, e.g., 9171/A, 9171/B, etc., should be placed on the label. NOTE - If the format used for the disk is no
