This specification covers five sizes of cargo, utility and pas- senger carrying, full tracked, arctic tracklaying vehicles. 1.2 Classification. The vehicle shall be rustproofed in accordance with the requirements of MIL-STD-1223. 3.4 Drain plugs. A
16、ll drain plugs installed throughout the vehicle for the purpose of draining lubricants shall be the permanent/magnet type and shall be readily accessible. Lubrication system shall permit use of arctic lubricants. 3.5 Design and construction. The carrier shall be a gasoline or diesel engine driven tr
17、acklaying vehicle designed for carrying cargo and passengers and shall be capable of meeting the requirements specified herein. 3.5.1 Weights and dimensions. The carrier shall be designed so that normal adjust- ments, repairs, lubricat
20、ion and overhaul can be readily accomplished by the use of general purpose tools with a minimum removal of or disturbance of other ele- ments of the carrier . 3.5 Performance. The carrier shall meet the load carrying, load towing and mobility requirements under the environmental conditions specified
21、 herein with the engine derated to 6,000 feet altitude (engine manufacturers data shall be fur ni shed. 3.6.1 Environmental conditions. The carrier shall be capable of satisfactory operation and storage in ambient temperatures ranging from -30F to +65“F and shall be capable of withstanding rain as e
22、ncountered in any locale. Size 3 - Operator, 5 passengers and a cargo load of 1300 pounds minimum evenly distributed over the cargo space. 25、venly distributed over the cargo space. Size 5 - Operator only. The carriers shall be capable of towing a trailer and cargo sled having a gross weight of 1500 pounds. Full load consists of curb weight, operator, passengers, and payload. For purposes of this specification, operator weight is equivale
26、nt to 175 pounds. 3.6.3 Mobility. When fully loaded, the carrier shall be capable of operating satisfactorily over hard packed level snow and smooth level ground at a speed of not less than 15 miles per hour (mph) (11 mph for size 5 vehicles) and not more than 25 mph for at least 120 miles without d
27、amage or refueling. Vehicle shall be capable of being operated at medium speeds (4-10 mph) for extended periods of time in mountainous terrain without overheating the engine and with- out failure. The vehicle shall develop a drawbar pull of not less than 13,000 pounds on snow surface, for size 5. 3.
28、6.3.1 Turning. Carrier turning radius for left and right turns shall not exceed 15 feet and shall be measured from the pivot point to inside edge of inner track . 3.6.3.2 Gradeability. and descending continuous grades of not less than 80 percent (%). loaded carrier shall be capable of operating, sto

The engine, complete with all necessary components and acces- sories, shall be a commercial industrial class, liquid cooled, internal com- bustion, fou
30、r-stroke cycle, gasoline type or a liquid cooled, internal combus- tion four-stroke cycle, diesel type. If gasoline engine is furnished, it shall produce the required vehicle performance when operated on unleaded fuel with a research octane rating of 91, at engine speed not more than the manu- factu
31、rers recommended operating speed. A lubricating oil filter of the full
34、 flaw type shall be furnished. when the cleaner is of the oil bath type, its oil capacity shall be not less than one pint. The thermostat furnished for the engine cooling system shall be of the range from 170F to 195F. The engine shall be furnished with an intake air cleaner and 3.7.2 Fuel tank. The
35、 fuel tank furnished shall be located rearward of the cab on sizes 1, 2, 3 and 5 and rearward of the operators seat on size 4 vehicles, and shall provide capacity necessary to conform to 3.6.3. The tank vent and filler lines shall be conveniently located so as to prevent gasoline fumes and leakage i
36、nside the vehicle. 3.7.3 Transmission. An automatic or hydrostatic transmission shall be pro- vided. The automatic transmission shall have a minimum of three forward speeds and 1 reverse speed and shall provide for driver selection of indivi- dual gears and ranges of gears. speeds that are infinitel
37、y variable for the entire speed range in forward and reverse direction. The transmission shall have a torque capacity adequate to transmit the maximum gross torque of the engine through all gear reductions. The hydrostatic transmission shall provide 3.7.4 Heater and defroster. Vehicle cab shall be p
38、rovided with a 12 volt hot water heater with fresh air intakes and discharge outlets to the floor and to the windshield defroster louvers. Heater shall be complete with blower and mounted controls convenient to the driver. Heater shall be capable of maintaining the temperature of the cab air at the
39、carrier floor above 40F when the ambient temperature is -25F with no solar input. When winterization is specified (see 3.13), the heater shall be capable of maintaining the temp- erature of the cab air at the carrier floor above 40F when the ambient temp- erature is -60F with no solar input. 3.7.5 T
40、rack control assembly. The track control shall consist of a lever(s), or steering wheel and column which shall be suitable located for left hand dr ive. 3.7.6 Drive line assembly. The drive line components shall be of adequate strength to transmit the maximum torque developed through all gear train
41、re- duc t ions. 3.7.7 Tracks. The carrier shall be equipped with two full driving tracks designed to provide continuous support to the carrier at all ground contact points. The track assemblies shall operate in varied terrain such as sand, mud, snow, ice and bare ground without excessive wear and br
42、eakage. The track design shall provide for repair of track, and for removal and replace- ment of track cleats. The track width and the length of the track contacting the ground shall provide a ground pressure not more than that specified in 3.5.1. Track mounting shall provide for not less than 4 inc
43、hes of track tension adjustment or shall be continuous spring tension type providing self adjustment of track tension. Track design shall provide independent control of each track. 3.7.8 Suspension system. The suspension system shall consist of axles and automotive tire assemblies independently moun
44、ted on each side of the carrier to avoid lateral stresses through the frame. 45、ssemblies so that a constant downward pressure is applied when the ye- hicle is operated on uneven surfaces and the track guides are retained in one vertical plane. 3.7.8.1 Axles. The axles shall provide for mounting of the wheel and tire assemblies. The axles shall be adequate for the loads imposed
46、 by the fully equipped and fully loaded carrier under the operating conditions specified herein. 3.7.8.2 Wheel and tire assemblies. The wheel and tire assemblies furnished shall be the Manufacturers recommended wheel and tire assemblies. Tires serv- ing as track tensioning surfaces shall be hard rub
47、ber. Tires shall provide adequate support for the vehicle and to the tracks when the vehicle is fully loaded to rated GVM. Tires and rims shall be in accordance with the requirements of the Tire and Rim As soci at ion recommend at ions. Pneumatic tires shall be Urethane foam filled type. 3.7.9 Braki
48、ng system. The braking system furnished shall be capable of com- pletely locking the tracks under all conditions of use. A separate emergency brake shall be incorporated in the drive system and shall be capable of hold- ing the fully loaded carrier stationary on a slope headed either direction equal
49、 to its grade climbing ability. The emergency brake handle shall be lo- cated so as to be easily operated by the driver. 3.7.10 Exhaust system. Exhaust system shall conform to Vehicle Motor Car- rier Safety Regulation 393.83. the vehicle or at least ten inches above the cab and be so located as to minimize the possibility of exhaust fumes entering the body of the vehicle. A spark arrestor, conforming to the material and performance requirements of MIL-A-27302, shall be f
