Pliers shallbe similar to Fig. 7 and shall conform to dimensionsshown in Table 1 for the size specified.5.2 MaterialsThe materials used in the manufacture o

、f pliers shallbe such as to produce pliers conforming to this Standard.5.3 Handles5.3.1 Characteristics. Handles shall be shaped toprovide a comfortable grip and shall be free from roughedges and sharp corners. Ends of handles shall not touchwhen the jaws are in a closed position. Outer handgripping

、 surfaces shall be smooth, knurled, impressed,or furnished with comfort grips.ASME B107.500-2010 (B107.11)5.3.2 Permanent Set. Permanent set of the handlesfor all types, except Type II, shall not exceed 0.04 in.when subjected to the handle load test specified inpara. 6.3. Handles contacting each oth

、er during loadtesting shall constitute failure.5.3.3 Comfort Grips. When comfort grips are fur-nished on handles, they shall be made of rubber, plastic,or other suitable material capable of withstanding nor-mal use without deteriorating or rubbing off and shallpass the solvent resistance test specif

、ied in para. 6.4.Comfort grips shall remain permanently attached undernormal use.Unless specifically designed, labeled, and tested forsuch use, tools with comfort grips shall not be advertisedor marked as having any nonconductive or electricallyinsulating properties.5.3.4 Hardness. Handles shall hav

、e a hardness from35 HRC to 50 HRC or equivalent.5.4 Joint5.4.1 Construction. There shall be no excessive side-ways movement, play, or other indication of loosenesswhen pliers are opened or closed that will affect theirfunction.5.4.2 Fastener Hardness. The fastener hardnessshall be from 25 HRC to 50

、HRC except when the fas-tener receives a case-hardening treatment in additionto the through hardening, in which case a maximumhardness equivalent to 60 HRC shall be permitted.5.5 Jaws5.5.1 Jaw Opening. Jaw opening shall be measuredat the tips of the jaws. Jaws shall open in a smoothand uniform manne

、r to their respective minimum jawopening as specified in Table 1 for individual type andclass of pliers using the procedure specified in para. 6.5.Beyond minimum opening, jaws may open with increas-ing loads until the positive stop of the tool is engaged.5.5.2 Cutting Edge Hardness. Cutting edge har

、d-ness shall be 55 HRC to 65 HRC or equivalent. Thebalance of the jaw area shall have a minimum hardnessof 35 HRC.5.5.3 Cushion Grip Throat. The cushion grip throatshall grip and retain the cut wire end. It shall be madeof rubber, plastic, or other suitable material capable ofwithstanding normal use

、 without deteriorating or rub-bing off and shall pass the solvent resistance test speci-fied in para. 6.4. Cushion grip throat shall remainpermanently attached under normal use.5.6 SpringsWhen a spring (or springs) is furnished, it shall becaptive, durable, and capable of opening the jaws under3norm

、al use. The spring shall open the jaws to minimumjaw opening as specified in Table 1.5.7 FinishMetallic surfaces shall have a rust preventive treat-ment and be free from pits, nodules, burrs, cracks, andother conditions that adversely affect the performanceor safety of the pliers. When provided, coa

、tings shall beadherent and free from any condition that interfereswith their protective value, safety, and function.5.8 MarkingPliers shall be marked in a plain and permanent man-ner with the manufacturers name or trademark of suchknown character that the manufacturer can be readilydetermined. Marki

、ng shall be as permanent as the nor-mal life expectancy of the pliers to which it is applied(providing the marked surface has not been subjectedto a fretting or abrading action) and be capable of with-standing the cleaning normally experienced during itsintended use.6 TESTSWARNING: Many tests required herein are inherently hazard-ous, and adequate safeguards for personnel and property shallbe employed in conducting these tests. These tests are designedto evaluate the tools and materials and do not condone the useof the tools in an environment, or in a manner, inconsistent with
