American National Standards Committee B18 for the standardization of bolts, screws, nuts, rivets, and similar fasteners was organized in March 1922 as Sectional Committee B18 under the
16、aegis of the American Engineering Standards Committee (later the American Standards Association, then the United States of America Standards Institute and, as of October 6, 1969, the American National Standards Institute) with the Society of Automo- tive Engineers and the American Society of Mechani
17、cal Engineers as joint sponsors. Subcommittee No. 9 was established in April 1929 to undertake the development and oversee the maintenance of standards covering socket head cap screws and set screws. In line with a general realignment of the subcommittee structure on April 1, 1966, Subcommit- tee 9
18、was redesignated Subcommittee 3. Over the intervening years this activity has pro- duced several versions of American National Standards covering inch series socket cap, shoulder, and set screws bearing the B18.3 designation. At the December 4, 1974 meeting of American National Standards Committee B
19、18, Sub- committee 3 was assigned the task of preparing standards for metric series socket screw products paralleling that contained in the latest ANSI B18.3 document. The Subcommittee was also instructed to continue coordinating that activity with the International Standards Organization, IS0 Techn
20、ical Committee2, and Working Group 3, and, to the extent possi- ble, to keep the proposals for metric standards under development in conformance with agreements reached therein. Subsequent meetings of Subcommittee 3, held in February 1975 and January 1976, re- sulted in general agreement on the foll
21、owing basic principles to be considered in developing the metric version of the standard. (a) To assure consumers continuity of performance integrity consistent with inch socket screw products, the metric standards should maintain the same quality levels as their inch counterparts. (b) To facilitate
22、 and expedite the processing, acceptance, and adoption of the metric ver- sions, proposals for thevarious product categories should be prepared as separate and com- plete prodiuct standards. (c) To promote understanding and assimilation during the transition to metric, the di- mensional symbols, des
23、ignations, terminology, and basic formats of the metric standards should be kept similar to that used in the ANSI B18.3 document. At the November 10,1976 meeting of Subcommittee 3, it was agreed that thesocket screw industry document covering metric series hexagon socket set screws should be circula
24、ted for subcommittee consideration as a proposed standard. It was noted that there were some di- mensional differences between this document and the recently published IS0 standards, namely, in the details of some of the points and the thread fit, The IS0 standards specify tolerance class 5g6g, wher
25、eas the socket screw industry document requires 4g6g, consistent with past practices. Also, the physical and mechanical requirements contained in the refer- enced documents in the IS0 standard were somewhat less stringent. Subcommittee accept- ance of the content ensued and the document, modified to
26、 moie closely suit the ANSI format, was approved by letter ballot to American National Standards Committee B18. iii Copyright ASME International Provided by IHS under license with ASMENot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-. 27、O 9 Following approval by the sponsor organizations, the proposal was submitted to the Ameri- can National Standards Institute and granted recognition as an American National Stan- dard on August 14, 1979. A periodic review of the standard, undertaken by the Subcommittee in 1985, resulted in agreeme
28、nt that the document should be revised to clarify the dimensions of spline socket sizes, to incorporate by reference the appropriate ASTM specifications for the mechanical and chemical properties, and to upgrade thread gaging. A proposal containing these changes, as well as editorial corrections, wa

The plane of the face shall be approximately perpendicular to the axis of the screw. 2.1.2 Face Chamfer. The face on screws having a
40、 nominal length longer than the nominal screw diame- ter shall be chamfered. The chamfer angle V shall be between 30 deg, and 45 deg. The chamfer shall extend slightly below the root of the thread, and the edge be- tween the face and chamfer may be slightly rounded. For screws having a nominal lengt
41、h equal to the nominal diameter or shorter, chamfering shall be at the option of the manufacturer. If chamfered, the chamfer angle Vshall not exceed 45 deg. 2.2 Sockets 2.2.1 Socket Size. Hexagon sockets shall be of nominal size Jspecified in Table 1 , and shall conform to the dimensions given in Ta

Spline sockets shall be of nominal size Mas speci- fied in Table 1, and shall conform to the dimensions given in Table 4, with gaging in accordance with para. 2.2.3. 2.2.2 Key Engagement. For screws of nominal lengths exceeding those listed in Tab
43、le 1 , the minimum key engagement T for the longest length shown shall apply. They represent the minimum key engagement depth necessary to develop the full functional capabil- ity of keys conforming to ANSI B18.3.2M7 Metric Series Hexagon Keys and Bits. Compliance with minimum depth requirements sha

METRIC SERIES SOCKET SET SCREWS FIG. 1 SOCKET EDGE DETAIL CAUTION: The use of set screws having a key engagement shallower than the deepest listed in Table 1 for the respective screw size can result in failure of the s

It is, therefore, strongly recommended that longer screw lengths having deepest minimum key engagements be used wherever possible. 2.2.3 Socket Gaging. Acceptability of hexagon sockets
46、 shall be determined by the use of the hexagon socket gages specified in Table 5. The hexagon sockets shall allow the GO member of the gage to enter freely to the minimum key engagement depth (para. 2.2.2). The NOT GO gage member shall be permitted to enter only to a depth equivalent to 10% of the n

The NOT GO member shall be permitted to enter only to a depth equivalent to 10% of the nominal socket size for nominal socket sizes up to and including 1.52 mm, and to 7.5% of the nominal socket size for larger sizes. To determine the acceptab
