Summary of Test Method3.1 A climbing treestand is mounted so that its platfor

、m isperpendicular to a rigid wood or metal pole when the rated loadis applied parallel to the mounting pole, at selected points. Afixed position or ladder stand shall be mounted with theplatform perpendicular to the mounting pole. A tripod standshall be positioned so that the platform is perpendicul

、ar to theapplication of the load. A climbing stick shall be mounted suchthat the steps are perpendicular to the pole. The platform isequipped with deflection measurement devices. The load isapplied, in order, at the selected points and recordings are madeof the deflection at each point unless the te

、st subject movesfrom its initial position or until permanent deflection from theload occurs. During this test, the test subject will rotate, butshall not slip or have permanent deformation.3.2 In addition, for climbing treestands, only the test givenin 3.1 is duplicated, except that the treestand pl

、atform is notperpendicular to the mounting pole, but at an angle approxi-mately 15, such as that used in ascending or descending a tree.4. Significance and Use4.1 This test method is intended for quality assurance andproduction control purposes. This test method is not intendedto be an independent m

、aterial or product-acceptance test.5. Apparatus5.1 A rigid round wood or metal pole, preferably vertical, isused to mount the subject product such that pole deflection isminimized.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilitiesan

、C700, West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959. United States15.1.1 The mounting pole diameter shall be 10 6 1 in. (2546 25.4 mm).5.2 The load shall be applied using either calibrated weightsor a mechanical device in conjunction with a calibrated loadcell.5.2.1 The use of calibrated weights requires that we

、ightplacement be accurate to assure that the load applicationcentroid is coincident with the boundaries defined and meetsthe requirements as given in 5.3.1 and in 5.4.3. Caution shouldbe exercised for operator protection with the use of weights incase of slippage or premature failure.5.2.2 The use o

、f a mechanical device such as a tensiletesting machine or hydraulic power, in combination withpulleys, fulcrums or bearings to re-direct forces, requires theuse of a calibrated load cell attached adjacent to the test subjectto account for friction losses.5.3 Calibrated deflection measuring devices (

、such as dialindicators or optical laser) shall be used to measure movementof the test subject under load. The accuracy of the measuringdevices shall be at within .010 in. (0.254 mm) and repeatablewithin .005 in. (0.127 mm). The devices shall measure move-ment parallel to the direction of the applied

、 load and shall bemounted in such a manner to eliminate deflection of the testapparatus and be placed, as a minimum, as follows:5.3.1 There shall be at least four platform deflection mea-surements taken when the load is applied.5.3.1.1 One measurement on each side of the test subject, symmetrical abo

、ut the test subject centerline and at pointsfurthest from the mounting pole, that is, the outermost cornersof the platform.5.3.1.2 One measurement on each side of the test subject, symmetrical about the test subject centerline and at pointsclosest to the mounting pole, but on the outermost sides of t

、heplatform, that is, the outermost edges closest to the mountingpole.5.4 The application of the load shall be at the points as givenin 5.3.1 on the platform area.5.4.1 The load shall be applied, one at a time, to the pointsas given in 5.3.1.1, each side, and then as given in 5.3.1.2, eachside.5.4.2

、The load shall be applied to the test subject over a 50in.2(0.032 m2) area by means of a flat rectangular steel plate 5in. (127 mm) wide by 10 in. (254 mm) long and a minimum of12 in. (12.7 mm) thick. The edges of the load plate adjacent tothe test subject shall be deburred with 0.015/0.030 in. (0.3

、81/0.762 mm) radius to reduce damage to the test subject by sharpcorners. A single layer of thin masking tape may be applied tothe surface of the load plate contacting the test subject toreduce scratching and improve friction.NOTE 1Load attachment structure must be secured to this load platetherefor

、e fabrication by welding must assure that the plate remain flat andfree of distortion.5.4.3 The load plate shall be positioned on the test subjectwith its long axis and its center as close to the point as givenin 5.3.1 as possible, yet maintaining the 50 in.2(0.032 m2)contact area. The centerline of

、 the load plate need not beparallel to the major axis (axis of symmetry) of the test subject.5.5 Climbing stands are to be tested at approximately 15below level, and above level, as per manufacturers directions.5.5.1 Apparatus shall be as given in 5.1 through 5.3.1.2.5.5.2 The load shall be applied

、as given in 5.4.2 except thatthe load plate shall be 100 in.2(0.065 m2) by using a 10 in.2(254 mm2)by12 in. (12.7 mm) thick plate.6. Procedure6.1 Read instructions accompanying the test subject toascertain the proper procedure for use and mounting and securethe test subject to the mounting pole such

、 that the platform(plane of the platform) is approximately perpendicular to themounting pole when its rated load is applied. If necessary, useminimum auxiliary temporary means to maintain the subject inthe correct position during set-up. (Frictional forces, without aload on the subject, may not be s

、ufficient in some cases for thesubject to remain in position. A small band on the mountingpole may be necessary).6.2 By geometric means, determine the location of the loadapplication points as given in 5.3.1 and 5.4.3 and markaccordingly.6.3 Determine if the test subject will deflect sufficientlydur

、ing the test to allow the load plate to slip or shift. If so,provide auxiliary means such as clamps or stops to eliminatesideways movement of the load plate. The load must be appliedas given in 5.4 and must be continuously applied parallel to themounting pole throughout the entire test.6.4 Locate an

、d mount deflection measurement devices, orreference points using optical laser, as given in 5.3.6.5 The initial trial load for beginning the test, at the firsttest point only, shall be 80 % of the test subjects ratedcapacity. For example, a test subject with a rated capacity of300 lb (661.4 kg) shal

、l begin the test at a trial load of 240 lb(529.1 kg).6.5.1 The trial load shall be applied to one of the two pointsas given in 5.3.1.1. Place the load plate centerline coincidentwith the mark as given in 5.4.3. With the initial trial (80 %)load, verify that the test subject does not move (shift) fro

、m itsinitial static equilibrium position on the mounting pole and thatdeflection from the load returns to its value with no yielding. Ifthis initial trial load verification fails, record the test as a failureto meet trial load conditions.6.5.2 After verification of the initial trial load, perform al

、oad test at the test subjects rated capacity. Duplicate this testat the opposite (remaining) point as given in 5.3.1.1 and repeatfor the test points given in 5.3.1.2.6.6 At each of the four test points, the load and all deflectionmeasurements shall be recorded. The load shall then beremoved and the

、deflection measurements re-recorded. A noteshall be made of any measurement that does not return towithin 0.200 in. (5.080 mm) of the maximum measureddeflection from its initial position (before loading).Anote shallbe made for any test point in which the test subject moves(shifts) from its initial s

、tatic equilibrium position on themounting pole.F2125 09 (2013)26.7 Climbing treestands are only to be retested at: (1)approximately 15 below level, and (2) approximately 15above level, in accordance with the manufacturers instruc-tions.6.7.1 The application of the load for a standing platformonly sh

、all be at a point that is the geometric centroid of the testsubjects placement area for the users feet while ascending ordescending a tree. Repeat the test procedure as given in 6.3 6.6 at each angle.6.7.2 The application of the load for a sitting platform (theupper platform of a two piece stand/sit

、 climbing treestand)shall be with a load plate as given in 5.4.2. Repeat the testprocedure as given in 6.3 6.6 at each angle, except that onlytwo points instead of four, specifically those given in 5.3.1.1shall be used at each angle.7. Report7.1 Deflection readings shall be discarded only when acali

、bration change is discovered after readings have been madeor when improper operator techniques can be cited.7.2 Recording of results shall include the following:7.2.1 Identification of test subject model, manufacturer, andrated capacity.7.2.2 Photograph of test subject.7.2.3 Photograph of test set-u

、p (three views: side, top, andend).7.2.4 Load and deflection measurements at all test points.7.2.5 Verification of calibration.7.2.6 Date of test.7.2.7 If yielding or permanent deformation has beenreached, or movement (shifting) has been detected as given in6.6 or 6.7 (for climbing treestands), the

、corresponding load inpounds and the test point shall be noted.7.3 Pass-Fail Criterion:7.3.1 Atreestand is considered failed if (after applying loadsand measurements in accordance with 5.3.1) yielding orpermanent deformation has been reached, or movement (shift-ing) has been detected as given in 6.6

、or 6.7 in any section ofthe treestand.7.3.2 Atreestand is considered failed if (after applying loadsand measurement in accordance with 5.3.1) the treestand shiftsas defined in 6.6 or 6.7.7.3.3 If a treestand fails this test, the stand and a copy of thetest data shall be returned to the manufacturer.
