、 7-bit coded character set of ISO/IEC 646: 1991. ANSI X3.4-1986 is a national version in accordance with the provi- sions specified in ISO/IEC 646: 1991. Provision for additional characters is made by code extension techniques in which additional characters or character sets are identified by escape
、 sequences. The procedures for code extension and the structure and use of escape sequences are documented in IS0 2022: 1994. Specific meanings are not assigned to individual escape sequences by IS0 2022: 1994. The purpose of international registration of these additional characters and character se
、ts is to inform all those concerned of the character sets already developed and of the specific escape sequences used to identify Page 1 of 5 pages them. Although international registration pro- vides identification for a character set, it should not be regarded as a standardization procedure. IS0 2
、375: 1985 specifies the procedures to be followed in preparing, maintaining, and publishing a register of meanings that are assigned to escape sequences. As specified in IS0 2375: 1985, any member body of IS0 can act as the sponsor of pro- posals for character sets for international reg- istration.
、ANSI will therefore act as sponsor of U.S. proposals, and this document speci- fies the procedures to be followed in submit- ting proposals for ANSI sponsorship. Since only registration (not standardization) is included in this procedure, no technical cri- teria will be applied to the sponsored set.
、 However, assistance will be given in prepar- ing the set in the format of the IS0 Registration Authority.
