2、0313. Reference: This request for interpretation refers to the requirements in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 32.1-2010, Section 3, regarding the definition of a vending machine. Background: The stated purpose of Standard 32.1 refers to self-contained, mechanically refrigerated vending machines for bottled, c

3、anned, or other sealed beverages. However, in Section 3 “Definitions” there is no definition for vending machine, or for self-contained, mechanically refrigerated vending machines for bottled, canned, or other sealed beverages. Since the Standard does not define the type of machine it is intended fo

4、r, it is difficult to determine what range of equipment it applies to. Interpretation No.1: Traditionally, a self-contained beverage vending machine is a cabinet containing a product storage area and an on-board control system with product selection switches that manage a cooling engine, payment sys

5、tem, product delivery system, and merchandising lighting to deliver cold product to a consumer. This is the type of vending machine that this Standard is intended for. Question No.1: Is this interpretation correct? Answer No.1: Yes. Comments: This standard applies to a basic and traditional (self-co

6、ntained) vending machine that stores and dispenses sealed containers of cold water/beverage/juice. Interpretations No.2: There are new machines today that may or may not be self-contained that automatically deliver cold product to a consumer, but have many other powered elements that serve other per

7、ipheral purposes beyond simply delivering cold product. These new machines may have any of a reverse vending waste management system, interactive video wall, network router, communication system, powered antenna, consumer award delivery system, or other universal satellite devices. These new machine

8、s have performance measures that are not addressed by the Standard. Just because the machine automatically delivers a cold beverage does not make it a vending machine addressed by this Standard. The Standard does not cover and is not intended for these non-traditional machines. Questions No.2: Is th

9、is interpretation correct? Answer No.2: Yes. Comments: This Standard does not apply to non-traditional vending machines that dispense or deliver a cold beverage that is not in a sealed container. The Standard (32.1) addresses the IC 32.1-2010-1 2011 ASHRAE. All Rights reserved. Page 2 of 2 refrigerated/delivery system portion of the machine. Thus, any peripheral devices, not necessary for the basic function of the vending machine are not addressed by Standard 32.1.
