、e ANSI N45.8 Committee was organizedto develop standards for high reliability air cleaningequipment for nuclear facilities and corresponding teststo confirm performance of the equipment. Two stan-dards, ASME N509 and ASME N510, were publishedin 1975 and 1976.In 1976, under the accredited organizatio
、n rules, theCommittee was reorganized as the ASME Committeeon Nuclear Air and Gas Treatment. The scope ofresponsibility increased to include the development ofcodes and standards for design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of air cleaning and conditioning componentsand appurtenances used in safe
、ty-related systems innuclear facilities. ASME AG-1 is the new Code resultingfrom the increased scope. This Code contains mandatory requirements, specificprohibitions, and nonmandatory guidance for construc-tion activities. Construction, as used in this Foreword,is an all-inclusive term relating to ma
、terial, design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and certification. TheCode does not address all aspects of these activitiesand those not specifically addressed may be considered. The Code is neither a handbook nor a replacementfor education, experience, and the use of engineeringjudgment. The phrase
、 “engineering judgment” refers totechnical judgments made by knowledgeable designersvexperienced in the application of the Code. Engineeringjudgments must be consistent with Code philosophyand such judgments shall never be used to overrulemandatory requirements or specific prohibitions of theCode. T
、he user is cautioned to carefully review theseCode requirements for suitability to specific applicationsother than nuclear power and nuclear fuel cycle facilities. The Code requirements established by the Committeeshall not be interpreted as approving, recommending,or endorsing any proprietary design
、.The Committee on Nuclear Air and Gas Treatmentmeets regularly to consider revisions of the Code re-quirements, new Code requirements as dictated bytechnological development, Code Cases, and requestsfor interpretations. Only the Committee on Nuclear Airand Gas Treatment has the authority to provide

Requests for revisions, new Code requirements, Code Cases, or interpretationsshall be addressed to the Secretary in writing and shallgive full particulars in order to receive considerationand action.
