13、m IHS-,-FOREWORDThe B16 Standards Committee was organized in the spring of 1920 and held its organizationalmeeting on November 21st of that year. The group operated as a sectional Committee (laterredesignated as a Standards Committee), under the authorization of the American EngineeringStandards Com

14、mittee (subsequently named American Standards Association, then the UnitedStates of America Standards Institute and now, American National Standards Institute). Sponsorsfor the group were the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Manufacturers StandardizationSociety of the Valve and Fitting Indu

15、stry, and the Heating and Piping Contractors NationalAssociation (later the Mechanical Contractors Association of America).The American Gas Association determined that standardization of gas valves used in distribu-tion systems was desirable and needed. The A.G.A. Task Committee on Standards for Val

16、vesand Shut-Offs was formed and development work commenced in 1958. In 1968, it was determinedthat a more acceptable document would result if approval were gained for the American NationalStandards Institute and to facilitate such action, the A.G.A. Committee became B16 SubcommitteeNo. 13, later ren

17、amed Subcommittee L, which is its current designation. In 1982, the B16 Commit-tee, was reorganized as an ASME committee operating under procedures accredited by ANSI.The first standard developed by the Subcommittee was ANSI B16.33.As a follow-up, the B16.38 standard was subsequently developed to co

18、ver larger sizes of gasvalves and shut-offs. Starting in about 1965, there was a major increase in the use of plastic pipingin gas distribution systems, which made it desirable to have valves and shut-offs of a compatiblematerial. To fill this need, the B16.40 standard was developed.In 1985, the lac

19、k of standards for gas valves for use in gas piping systems, downstream fromthe point of delivery (meter outlet), and upstream of the inlet to gas utilization equipment, wasbrought to the attention of the subcommittee. To fill this need, this Standard was developed.This Standard has been developed s

20、o that user and manufacturers have a common basis valvespecification, one that can be readily used to qualify valve designs. Usage by certifying bodieswould make it possible for building codes to reference the standard.In 2002, the title was changed to clearly match the updated scope and several oth

28、lly operated metallic valvesin sizes NPS 414and tubing sizes 114O.D. These valvesare intended for indoor installation as gas shutoff valveswhen installed in aboveground fuel gas piping down-stream of the gas meter outlet and upstream of the inletconnection to a gas appliance. The valves covered byth

29、is Standard are intended for service at temperaturesbetween 32F (0C) and 125F (52C) at pressure ratingsnot to exceed 5 psi (0.34 bar). When so designated by themanufacturer, these valves may be installed for serviceoutdoors and/or at temperatures below 32F (0C) and/or above 125F (52C).1.2 Applicabil

30、ityThis Standard sets requirements, including qualifica-tion requirements, for metallic gas valves for use in gaspiping systems. Details of design, materials, and testingin addition to those stated in this Standard that arenecessary to meet the qualification and production test-ing requirements of t

31、his Standard remain the responsi-bility of the manufacturer. A valve used under a codejurisdiction or governmental regulation is subject to anylimitation of such code regulations.1.3 LimitationsThis Standard does not apply to manually operatedgas valves that are an integral part of a gas appliance.M

32、anually operated gas valves intended for use in aparticular appliance are covered in the AmericanNational Standard/Canadian Gas Association Standardfor Manually Operated Gas Valves for Appliances,Appliance Connector Valves, and Hose End Valves,ANSI Z21.15/CGA 9.1.1.4 ConventionFor the purpose of det

33、ermining conformance withthis Standard, the convention for fixing significant digitswhere limits, maximum and minimum values, are speci-fied by “rounding off” as defined in ASTM Practice E29. This requires that an observed or calculated value1shall be rounded off to the nearest unit in the last righ

34、t-hand digit used for expressing the limit. Decimal valuesand tolerances do not imply a particular method of mea-surement.1.5 Quality SystemsRequirements relating to the product manufacturersQuality System Programs are described in Nonmanda-tory Annex A.1.6 UnitsThe values stated in either inch unit

35、s or metric unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The valuesstated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore,each system must be used independently of the other.Combining values from the two systems may result innon-conformance with the standard.All pressures, unless otherwise sp

36、ecified, are gaugepressures.2 GENERAL CONSTRUCTION AND ASSEMBLY2.1 GeneralEach valve at the time of manufacture shall be capableof meeting the requirements set forth in this Standard.The workmanship employed in the manufacture andassembly of each valve shall provide for the specifiedgas tightness, r

37、eliability of performance, freedom frominjurious imperfections, and defects as specified herein.2.2 End ConnectionsThe valve body shall be provided with wrench flatsat ends with tapered pipe threads.2.3 Pipe and Tubing Connections2.3.1 Taper Pipe Threads. Taper pipe threads, whenprovided, shall be i

38、n accordance with ASME B1.20.1.2.3.2 Flare Tubing Connection. Valves with an inletand/or outlet for38,12,or58O.D. tube shall be in accor-dance with the flare fitting dimensions shown in Table1. Other flare sizes shall be made per manufacturersstandards.2.4 Operating HeadThe operating head of the val

44、hat the operatorcan visually determine that the valve is in the open orclosed position. When the valve is in the closed position,the operating lever or flow indicator shall be perpendic-ular to the longitudinal axis of the valve.22.7 Tamper-Proof FeaturesWhere valves are specified to be tamper-proof

45、, theyshall be designed and constructed to minimize the possi-bility of the removal of the core of the valve with otherthan specialized tools (i.e., tools other than commonwrenches, pliers, etc.).2.8 Automatic CompensationThe valve may be provided with automatic means tocompensate for displacement o
