13、FI-156 in2002. IFI agreed to participate in the conversion of this Standard from an IFI standard to anASME standard. Since the completion of this ASME Standard, IFI-156 has been withdrawn fromcirculation. ASME B18.6.8 is the only standard covering the inch series for thumb and wingscrews.This Standa

23、screws recognized as standard.1.1.2 The inclusion of dimensional data in thisStandard is not intended to imply that all of the productsdescribed are stock production sizes. Purchasers mustconsult with suppliers concerning stock sizes.1.2 Comparison With ISO StandardsThere are no ISO standards at thi

24、s time for theseproducts.1.3 DimensionsAll dimensions are in inches unless otherwise statedin this Standard. When nominal sizes are designated indecimals, zeros in the fourth place shall be omitted.1.4 TerminologyFor definition of terms other than those defined belowrelating to fasteners or componen

25、ts thereof used in thisStandard, refer to ASME B18.12.thumb screw: a screw with a flattened head designed formanual turning without a driver or wrench. The thumbscrews covered by this Standard are classified by typeson the basis of design characteristics. They consist ofthe following:Type A thumb sc

26、rews: forged one-piece screws with ashoulder under head that are available in two series:regular and heavy. Dimensions are given in Tables 1 and2, respectively.Type B thumb screws: forged one-piece screws withoutshoulder that are available in two series: regular andheavy. Dimensions are given in Tab

27、les 3 and 4,respectively.wing screw: a screw with a wing-shaped head designedfor manual turning without a driver or wrench. Thewing screws covered by this Standard are classified firstby type, on the basis of the method of manufacture, andsecondly by style, on the basis of design characteristics.The

28、y consist of the following:Type A wing screws: screws of two-piece constructionwith cold-formed or cold-forged wing portions of mod-erate height. In some sizes they are produced in regular,light, and heavy series to best suit the requirements ofspecific applications. Dimensions are given in Table 5.

29、1Type B wing screws: screws of hot-forged one-piececonstruction available in two wing styles: Style 1, withwings of moderate height; and Style 2, with high wings.Dimensions are given in Tables 6 and 7, respectively.Type C wing screws: screws available in two styles:Style 1, a one-piece die-cast cons

30、truction with wings ofmoderate height; and Style 2, a two-piece constructionwith a die-cast wing portion of moderate height. Dimen-sions are given in Tables 8 and 9, respectively.Type D wing screws: screws of two-piece welded con-struction with stamped sheet metal wing portions ofmoderate height. Di

34、GENERAL DATA2.1 Heads and WingsThe details of head and wing contour shall be optionalwhen the manufacturer provides and maintains dimen-sions in the applicable table. The design of two-piecewing screws shall be such that the wing portions shallbe retained on and not rotate about the shank portionswh

35、ere screws are tightened and loosened with fingerpressure.2.2 Bearing SurfaceThe bearing surface of the shoulder on all wing screwsand on Type A thumb screws shall be at right angles tothe axis of the screw shank within a tolerance of 4 deg.The surface shall be free from burrs, fins, and protrudings

36、urface irregularities.2.3 Length2.3.1 Measurement. The length, L, of thumb orwing screws shall be measured parallel to the axis ofthe screw from the intersection of the head or shoulderwith the shank to the extreme end of the screw.2.3.2 Standard Lengths. The standard lengthswithin the practical scr

37、ew length ranges specified in therespective dimensional tables for the various types andsizes of thumb and wing screws shall be as tabulatedin Table 11.2.3.3 Tolerance on Length. The tolerance on lengthof screw shall be as tabulated in Table 12.2.4 ThreadsThreads for all types of thumb screws and wi

38、ng screwsshall be in conformance with ASME B1.1, Class 2A,before plating or coating. The applicable thread sizelimits after plating or coating shall be Class 3A maxi-mum and Class 2A minimum. Thread acceptability shallbe determined using ASME B1.3, System 21.2.5 Length of ThreadScrews shall have thr

39、ead lengths conforming toTable 13.2.6 PointsThumb and wing screws shall be supplied with plainsheared ends. When specified, screws may be obtainedwith cone, cup, dog, flat, or oval points conforming todimensions shown in Table 14.22.7 StraightnessWing and thumb screws shall be straight within thelim

40、its of 0.006 in./in. using the gage and procedure inASME B18.2.9.2.8 Material2.8.1 Thumb Screws2.8.1.1 Thumb screws of all types shall be madefrom low carbon steel per UNS designation G10060 orhigher, having 48,000 psi min. ultimate tensile strength.2.8.1.2 When specified, case-hardened thumbscrews

41、shall be supplied when using UNS designatedlow carbon steel G10180 or higher as defined inASTM DS-56I.2.8.1.3 Thumb screws may also be made fromcorrosion-resistant steel, brass, aluminum, or othermaterials as agreed upon by the supplier and purchaser.2.8.2 Wing Screws2.8.2.1 Type A. Type A wing scre

42、ws shall be sup-plied in carbon steel with the shank portion case hard-ened. When specified, they may also be made fromcorrosion-resistant steel, brass, aluminum, or othermaterials as agreed upon by the supplier and purchaser.2.8.2.2 Type B. Both portions of Type B wingscrews shall be made from carb

43、on steel per UNS desig-nation G10060 or higher. When specified, they may alsobe made from corrosion-resistant steel, brass, aluminum,or other materials as agreed upon by the supplier andpurchaser.2.8.2.3 Type C. Type C, Style 1 wing screws shallbe supplied only in die-cast zinc alloy such as UNSdesi

44、gnation Z33520.Type C, Style 2 wing screws shall have wing portionmade from die-cast zinc alloy such as UNS designationZ33520 with shank portion made from low carbon steelper UNS designation G10060 or higher. When specified,the shank portion may be made from corrosion-resistantsteel, brass, aluminum

45、, or other materials as agreedupon by the supplier and purchaser.2.8.2.4 Type D. Both portions of Type D wingscrews shall be supplied in carbon steel per UNS desig-nation G10060 or higher. When specified, they may alsobe made from corrosion-resistant steel, brass, aluminum,or other materials as agre

46、ed upon by the supplier andpurchaser. See Table 15.2.9 FinishUnless otherwise specified, thumb screws and wingscrews shall be supplied with a plain (unplated oruncoated) finish. When an electrodeposited finish isrequired, appropriate finish code in ASTM F 1941 shallbe referenced.ASME B18.6.8-20102.1

47、0 WorkmanshipThumb and wing screws shall not contain an excessof surface imperfections that might affect their service-ability, such as burrs, seams, laps, loose scale, and otherirregularities. When specified on the purchase order,surface discontinuities shall meet the requirements ofASTM F 788/788M
