、e, in its July 1971 report to Congress, titled “ A Metric America A Decision WhoseTime Has Come, ” recommended that the United States should change to the metric system of measurement through acoordinated national program. This action, along with subsequent increased metric activity in industry, res

、ulted in anumber of requests from producers and users that the B32 Committee develop preferred series of metric sizes for thevarious forms of wrought metal mill products. The B32.100 standard is based on the previously published standards B32.3M-1984 and B32.4M-1980. Developmentof these standards was

、 started in 1973. The proposal received Standards Committee B32 approval on June 4, 1974. It wassubsequently approved by the sponsor and submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for designa-tion as an American National Standard. This was granted on July 9, 1974. The last edition

、 was approved by ANSI onSeptember 24, 1984 and reaffirmed in 1994.The sizes in this Standard are derived from a list of preferred metric sizes in which each number is approximately 60%greater than the number preceding it (ANSI B4.2 or ISO 497 Series R5). Second Choice sizes are in increments of 25%(

、Series R10) and Third Choice sizes in increments of 12% (Series R20). Some deviations from this principle occur as theresult of minor rounding. The selected sizes also reflect standard material sizes in ISO and national standards in tradi-tional metric countries. In 2002, the B32 Committee establishe

、d a task force to draft a new metric standard for the product group: ASMEB32.100-200X Preferred Metric Sizes for Flat, Round, Square, Rectangular, and Hexagonal Metal Products.Material tolerances must be included in order to fully define the size of a product. 35、Standard establishes a preferred series of metricthicknesses, widths, and lengths for flat metal products ofrectangular cross section. The thicknesses and widthsshown in this Standard are also applicable to basemetals that may be coated in later operations. ThisStandard also establishes a preferred

、series of metricsizes for round, square, rectangular, and hexagonalmetal products.2 GENERALThe sizes in this Standard provide an orderly series ofthicknesses for all flat metal products and widths forrectangular cross-section metal products. The serieswas developed to provide a reasonable selection

、ofmetal thicknesses from 0.050 mm to 300 mm and ofmetal widths from 10 mm to 5 000 mm. In each case, the series provides for some second, third, and sometimesfourth choice sizes (thicknesses and widths) to coverinstances where selection from the primary preferredsizes may be inadequate. Sufficient co

、verage in logicalsteps is presented in the tables to adequately servemost of the general purpose requirements of industryfor flat metal products. This Standard provides anorderly series of lengths for flat metal products. This Standard also provides a series of sizes for each ofround, square, rectang

、ular, and hexagonal forms of metalproducts used for general applications. The series wasdeveloped to provide a reasonable selection of metaldiameters from 0.020 mm to 320 mm for rounds anddistance-across-flats from 3 mm to 300 mm forsquares, various cross-section sizes from 1.6 mm by2 mm to 100 mm b

、y 200 mm for rectangles, and from1.5 mm to 150 mm for hexagons. The series providesfor some second, third, and fourth choice diameters forrounds and second and third choice distance-across-flats for squares and hexagons, where selection fromthe primary preferred sizes may be inadequate. Theseries al

、so provides for preferred lengths of rounds, squares, rectangles, and hexagons. Sufficient coveragein logical steps is presented in the tables to adequatelyserve most of the general purpose requirements ofindustry for round, square, rectangular, and hexagonalmetal products. It is recognized that for s

、ome applications, particularlylarge-volume requirements in some metals for specificend uses, precise engineering requirements dictate aneed for sizes other than those presented in thisStandard. This Standard is in no way meant to precludethe use of such sizes where they are required. However, forgen

、eral purpose applications or where requirementspermit some latitude in the selection of thickness or thick-ness/width/length combinations, the simplifiedpreferred sizes given in this Standard should facilitateinterchangeability of metals in design, reduce inventories, and increase the availability of

、 warehouse stocks of thosesizes commonly used for general purpose applications. Insuch instances, the use of sizes listed in this Standard is tobe encouraged. All of the sizes included in this Standard are not neces-sarily produced in all metals and grades. Producers ordistributors should be consulte

、d to determine availabilityof a particular thickness or thickness/width combinationfor a given metal product.3 USE OF TABLESWherever possible, sizes should be selected from thecolumns headed “First Choice. ” Only if no size in thepreferred list is suitable should a selection be madefrom the columns

、headed “Second Choice” or “ThirdChoice. ” Lengths should be selected from the preferred list.4 BASIS OF TABLESThe sizes in this Standard are derived from a list ofpreferred metric sizes in which each number is approxi-mately 60% greater than the number preceding it ANSIB4.2 (Preferred Metric Limits

、and Fits) or ISO 497 (Guideto the choice of series of preferred numbers and seriescontaining more rounded values of preferred numbers)Series R5. Second Choice sizes are in increments of25% (Series R10) and Third Choice sizes in incrementsof 12% (Series R20). Some deviations from this principleoccur

、as the result of minor rounding. The selected sizesalso reflect standard material sizes in ISO and nationalstandards in traditional metric countries.5 TOLERANCESMaterial product tolerances are shown in applicableinternational or national product standards. Normal toler-ances shown in international s

、tandards are generallylarger and could be up to twice as large for metric materialcompared with customary inch tolerances used in the U.S.Only a few major product groups will be covered by thisStandard, and they are specified in paras. 5.1 through 5.8 .ASME B32.100-201615.1 Hot-Rolled Steel SheetsPreferred sizes for hot-rolled steel sheets are shown inTables 1 through 3 . Tolerances for hot-rolled steel sheetsare specified in ISO 4995 (Hot-rolled steel sheet of struc-tural quality) and ISO 5002 (Hot-rolled and cold-reducedelectrolytic zinc-coated carbon steel sheet of commercial
