、ic steel castings forvalves, flanges, fittings, and other pressure-containing parts(Note 1).NOTE 1Carbon steel castings for pressure-containing parts are cov-ered by Specification A216/A216M, low-alloy steel castings by Specifi-cation A217/A217M, and duplex stainless steel castings by SpecificationA
、995/A995M.1.2 A number of grades of austenitic steel castings areincluded in this specification. Since these grades possessvarying degrees of suitability for service at high temperaturesor in corrosive environments, it is the responsibility of thepurchaser to determine which grade shall be furnished
、. Selec-tion will depend on design and service conditions, mechanicalproperties, and high-temperature or corrosion-resistantcharacteristics, or both.1.2.1 Because of thermal instability, Grades CE20N, CF3A,CF3MA, and CF8A are not recommended for service attemperatures above 800F 425C.1.3 Supplementa
、ry requirements of an optional nature areprovided for use at the option of the purchaser. The Supple-mentary requirements shall apply only when specified indi-vidually by the purchaser in the purchase order or contract.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded se
、parately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.4.1 This specification is expressed in both inch-poundunits and in
、 SI units; however, unless the purchase order orcontract specifies the applicable M specification designation(SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. Ordering Information4.1 The inquiry and order should include or indicate thefollowing:4.1.1 A description of the casting by pattern number ordrawing (dimensional tolerances shall be included on thecasting drawing),4.1.2 Grade of steel,4.1.3 Option
、s in the specification, and4.1.4 Supplementary requirements desired, including thestandards of acceptance.5. Process5.1 The steel shall be made by the electric furnace processwith or without separate refining such as argon-oxygen decar-burization (AOD).6. Heat Treatment6.1 All castings shall receive
、 a heat treatment at the tem-perature specified in Table 1, followed by a quench in water orrapid cool by other means except as noted.NOTE 2Proper heat treatment of these alloys is usually necessary toenhance corrosion resistance and in some cases to meet mechanicalproperties. Minimum heat-treat tem
、peratures are specified; however, it issometimes necessary to heat-treat at higher temperatures, hold for someminimum time at temperature, and then rapidly cool the castings in orderto enhance the corrosion resistance and meet mechanical properties.7. Chemical Composition7.1 The steel shall conform
、to the requirements as tochemical composition prescribed in Table 2.8. Tensile Properties8.1 Steel used for the castings shall conform to the require-ments as to tensile properties prescribed in Table 3.9. Quality9.1 The surface of the casting shall be examined visuallyand shall be free of adhering
、sand, scale, cracks, and hot tears.Other surface discontinuities shall meet the visual acceptancestandards specified in the order. Visual Method SP-55 or othervisual standards may be used to define acceptable surfacediscontinuities and finish. Unacceptable visual surface discon-tinuities shall be re
、moved and their removal verified by visualexamination of the resultant cavities.9.2 When additional inspection is desired, SupplementaryRequirements S5, S6, and S10 may be ordered.9.3 The castings shall not be peened, plugged, or impreg-nated to stop leaks.10. Repair by Welding10.1 Repairs shall be
、made using procedures and weldersqualified under Practice A488/A488M.10.2 Weld repairs shall be inspected to the same qualitystandards that are used to inspect the castings. When castingsare produced with Supplementary Requirement S5 specified, weld repairs on castings that have leaked on hydrostatic
、 test, oron castings in which the depth of any cavity prepared for repairwelding exceeds 20 % of the wall thickness or 1 in. 25 mm,whichever is smaller, or on castings in which any cavityprepared for welding is greater than approximately 10 in.265 cm2, shall be radiographed to the same standards tha
、t areused to inspect the castings. When castings are produced withSupplementary Requirement S6 specified, weld repairs shall beinspected by liquid penetrant examination to the same stan-dards that are used to inspect the castings.10.3 For Grade HG10MnN, the filler metal to be used shallbe establishe
、d by mutual agreement between the manufacturerand the purchaser.NOTE 3When austenitic steel castings are to be used in services wherethey will be subject to stress corrosion, the purchaser should so indicate inhis order and such castings should be solution-heat treated following allweld repairs.11.
