17、ainuniform temperature throughout the plate thickness and thenquenching in water. Subsequently, temper the plates within therange from 1050 to 1175F 565 to 635C, holding at thistemperature for a minimum of 30 min/in. 1.2 min/mm ofthickness but not less than 15 min, and cool in air or waterquench at
18、a rate not less than 300F/h 165C/h.5.2.1 Hardening The plates shall be heated to a tempera-ture within the range from 1475 to 1700F 800 to 925C, heldat that temperature for a sufficient time to obtain uniformtemperature throughout the plate thickness, and then quenchedin a liquid media.5.2.2 Temperi
19、ng The plates shall be tempered at a tem-perature within the range from 1050 to 1175F 565 to 635C,being held at that temperature for a minimum of 30 min/in. 1.2min/mm of thickness, but in no case less than 15 min, and thencooled in air or liquid-quenched at a rate not less than 300F/h165C/h.5.2.2.1
20、Prior to the tempering treatment, the plates may besubjected to an intermediate heat treatment consisting ofheating to a temperature in the range from 1165 to 1290F 630to 700C for Type I, or 1185 to 1310F 640 to 710C forType II, holding at that temperature for a minimum of 1 h/in.2.4 min/mm of thick
21、ness, but in no case less than 15 min, andthen water-quenching to below 300F 150C in the case ofplate thicknesses of more than58 in. 16 mm or cooling in airor water-quenching to below 300F 150C in the case of platethicknesses of58 in. 16 mm and under.NOTE 1The intermediate heat treatment is for the
22、purpose of enhanc-ing elongation and notch-toughness and for reducing susceptibility tostrain-aging embrittlement and temper embrittlement. It may be per-formed at the option of the material manufacturer or may be specified bythe purchaser.6. Chemical Requirements6.1 The steel shall conform to the c
23、hemical requirementsshown in Table 1 unless otherwise modified in accordance withSupplementary Requirement S17, Vacuum Carbon-DeoxidizedSteel, in Specification A20/A20M.7. Mechanical Requirements7.1 Tension Test RequirementsThe material as representedby tension-test specimens shall conform to the re
24、quirementsspecified in Table 2.7.1.1 Upon agreement between the purchaser and the manu-facturer, yield strength may be determined by the extensionunder load method, using 0.005 in./in. mm/mm total exten-sion.7.1.2 For nominal plate thicknesses of34 in. 20 mm andunder, the 112 in. 40 mm wide rectangu
25、lar specimen may beused for the tension test and the elongation may be determinedin a 2 in. 50 mm gage length that includes the fracture andshows the greatest elongation.7.2 Impact Test Requirements:7.2.1 Charpy V-notch impact tests shall be made in accor-dance with Specification A20/A20M.7.2.2 The
26、longitudinal axis of the test specimens shall betransverse to the final rolling direction of the plate.7.2.3 Unless otherwise agreed, tests shall be conducted at320F 195C for Type I and at 275F 170C for TypeII.7.2.4 Each test specimen shall have a lateral expansionopposite the notch of not less than
27、 0.015 in. 0.381 mm.8. Finish8.1 Because retained scale may mask surface imperfections,as well as mar the plate surface, plates shall be descaled by theproducer after heat treatment. In the case of material to beheat-treated by the purchaser, the plates shall be descaled bythe producer prior to ship

Marking9.1 In addition to the marking required in SpecificationA20/A20M, each plate shall be legibly stamped or stenciled,depending upon the ordered thickness, with the letters QT,except as otherwise specified in 9.1.1.9.1.1 When the optional heat treatment in 5.2.2.1 is per-formed, the plat
