Scope1.1 This specification covers steel track spikes used asfastenings between railroad rails, tie plates, and ties.1.2 Three grades of spikes are described, G

3、rades 1, a lowercarbon steel; Grade 2, a higher carbon steel; and Grade 3, acarbon structural steel, conforming to Specification A36/A36M.1.3 Supplementary Requirement (S1) are provided for useand shall only apply when specified in the purchase order.1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to

Ordering Information3.1 Orders for spikes under this specification shall includethe following information as appropriate:3.1.1 Quantity (weight),3.1.2 Grade in accordance with 1.2 and Table 1, Table 2,Ta

7、ble 3, Table 4, Table 5, and Table 6,3.1.3 DesignAREMA design (see 2.2), or other, includingdrawings if required,3.1.4 Dimensionscross section and length,3.1.5 Supplementary Requirement if to apply (see S 1) andTable 1, and3.1.6 Certification and Test Report Requirements (see 12.1).4. Manufacture4.1

8、 The steel shall be made by any of the followingprocesses: electric-furnace or basic-oxygen.4.2 The steel may be cast by a continuous process, or iningots.5. Chemical or Alternative Tension Test Requirements5.1 The manufacturer has the option to furnish spikes fromsteel conforming to the heat or cas

9、t analysis described in 5.2,the alternative analysis described in 5.3, or the alternativetension test described in 5.4.5.2 Heat or Cast AnalysisAn analysis of each heat or castshall be made by the manufacturer of the steel to determine thepercentage of the elements specified in Table 1. The analysis

10、shall be made from a test sample taken preferably during thepouring of the heat or cast. The chemical composition thusdetermined shall conform to the requirements of Table 1. Allelements listed in Table 1 shall be reported in the test analysisto the purchaser when requested.5.3 Alternative AnalysisW

11、hen the heat or cast analysis ofthe steel cannot be furnished and the spike manufacturer electsto offer the material on the basis of chemical composition, ananalysis of three finished spikes selected at random from each10-ton (9-Mg) lot shall be made by the manufacturer and theseparate chemical comp

12、ositions shall conform to the require-ments of Table 1. The product analysis for specified elementsshall conform to the permitted variations in Table B of Speci-fication A6/A6M.5.4 Alternative Tension TestThe manufacturer of thespikes may, at his option, elect to substitute a tension test forthe che

13、mical analysis specified in 5.2 or 5.3. 17、ple taken from a finished spike represent-ing each heat or cast, or 10-ton (9-tonne) lot if spikes arefurnished in accordance with 5.3. The chemical compositionthus determined shall conform to the requirements in Table 1and Table 2.6. Bend Requirements6.1 Body BendThe body of a full-size finished sp

18、ike shallwithstand the bend test described in Table 4 without crackingon the outside of the bent portion.6.2 Head BendThe head of a full-size finished spike shallwithstand the bend test described in Table 4 without showingevidence of forging laps.6.3 Number of TestsOne bend test of each type specifi

19、edin 6.1 and 6.2 shall be made from each 5-ton (4.5-tonne) lot offinished spikes or fraction thereof.7. Dimensions and Permissible Variations7.1 The finished spikes shall conform to the dimensionsspecified by the purchaser, subject to the permissible variationsprescribed in Table 5.8. Workmanship, F

20、inish, and Appearance8.1 The finished spikes shall be straight, with well-formedheads and sharp points and shall be free of injurious and otherimperfections not consistent with good commercial practice.9. Retests9.1 If, during the tension or bend tests, a previously undis-covered material or manufac

21、turing flaw should be disclosedthat interferes with the test or the interpretation of results, thesubstitution of another sample spike shall be permitted after itis demonstrated to the satisfaction of the purchaser or hisrepresentative, that the condition is not typical of the remainderof the lot.9.

27、tion, it may be discarded and another specimen taken.10. Inspection10.1 The manufacturer shall afford the purchasers inspectorall reasonable facilities necessary to satisfy that the material isbeing produced and furnished in accordance with this specifi-cation. Mill inspection by the purchaser shall

28、 not interfereunnecessarily with the manufacturers operations. All tests andinspections shall be made at the place of manufacture, unlessotherwise agreed upon.11. Rejection and Rehearing11.1 Material that fails to conform to the requirements ofthis specification may be rejected. Rejections shall be

29、reportedto the manufacturer or supplier promptly and in writing. In caseof dissatisfaction with the test results, the manufacturer orsupplier may make claim for a rehearing.12. Certification and Test Report12.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, amanufacturers certification shall be f

30、urnished to the purchaserthat the material was produced and tested in accordance withthis specification and has been found to meet the requirements.12.2 When specified in the purchase order or contract, areport of the chemical and mechanical test results shall befurnished.12.3 A Material Test Report

31、, Certificate of Inspection, orsimilar document printed from or used in electronic form froman electronic data interchange (EDI) transmission shall beregarded as having the same validity as a counterpart printed inthe certifiers facility. The content of the EDI transmitteddocument must meet the requ

32、irements of the invoked ASTMstandard(s) and conform to any existing EDI agreement be-tween the purchaser and the supplier.12.4 Notwithstanding the absence of a signature, the orga-nization submitting either a printed document (Material TestReport, Certificate of Inspection or similar document) or an

33、EDI transmission is responsible for the content of the report.13. Product Markings13.1 Each spike shall be marked on the top of the headwhile it is being formed with appropriate symbols as describedin Table 6.13.2 Bar Coding:13.2.1 The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) BarCode Standard for Pri

34、mary Metals for Steel Products may beconsidered as a possible auxiliary method of identification onthe containers. Use of this method shall be by agreementbetween purchaser and supplier.14. U. S. 37、TARY REQUIREMENTSThe following supplementary requirement shall apply only when specified by the purchaser in theorder:S1.Copper may be specified to a 0.20 % min for Grade 1, Grade2, or Grade 3. The maximum copper content shall be deter-mined upon mutual agreement between the purchaser and themanufac

38、turer.S2.Since spikes are hammer-struck, a minimum Charpy V-notchimpact requirement is desirable, particularly in cold weather. Anew supplement for impact toughness is therefore provided.S3.The Charpy V-notch average toughness of three individualtest values, where each bar specimen is taken from thr

39、eeseparate spikes in the same lot, shall be a minimum of 15 ft-lbs.Testing shall be in accordance with Specification A370. Thetest temperature shall be determined either by the lowestaverage temperature of the location where the spikes shall beused, or other temperature specified in the purchase ord
