17、than that indicated for continuouswelded areelectric resistance welded.4.1.2 Austenitic Stainless SteelAustenitic stainless steelpipe nipples shall be in accordance with Specification A 312/A 312M.4.2 ThreadsPipe nipples shall be threaded on both endswith NPT taper pipe threads conforming to the req
18、uirements ofANSI B 1.20.1, except for “close” nipples where L 4 and V areshorter, due to fewer imperfect threads. It is standard manu-facturing practice on all other nipple lengths to vary L 4 plus orminus two threads. All other dimensions, tolerances, andgaging practices remain the same asANSI B 1.
19、20.1, plus 5.3 ofthis specification.4.2.1 Threads shall be right-hand on both ends, except whenotherwise specified.4.3 Lengths:4.3.1 The standard lengths and sizes of nipples generallyavailable are shown in Table 2. The availability of such nipplesaccording to pipe size and weight is shown in Table

(304.8 mm)long shall have a length tolerance of 6116 in. (1.6 mm).Nipples over 1
28、2 in. long shall have a tolerance of 618 in. (3.2mm).4.4 End FinishThe ends of the pipe nipples shall bechamfered on the outside at an angle of 35 6 10 to the centralaxis. (It is the standard practice that the18-in. (3.2-mm)nominal pipe size nipples are not chamfered.) Ends shall be cutreasonably sq
29、uare to the central axis. All burrs on the insideshall be removed.4.5 Galvanized NipplesGalvanized nipples ordered underthis specification shall be made from pipe coated on the insideand outside by the hot-dip process. Threads and nipple ends arenot galvanized.5. Sampling and Inspection5.1 SamplingS
30、amples of nipples sufficient to determinetheir conformance with the requirements of this specificationshall be taken at random for each lot of nipples of the samepipe size, length, and material.5.2 InspectionThe samples shall be inspected to deter-mine their conformance with the dimensional requirem
31、ents,including thread dimensions and finish of this specification.5.3 Gaging Techniques for Male Threads:5.3.1 An NPT working ring gage, in accordance with ANSIB1.20.1, shall be turned hand tight on the nipple threads. Thegage shall be tapped or rapped against a solid surface and thegage again turne
32、d hand tight into the thread. Hand tight meansturning the gage until moderate resistance is encountered; noexcessive force shall be used. After the second tighteningoperation, the end of the thread should be flush to the gageface, plus or minus one turn.5.3.2 The usual technique for tapping or rappi
33、ng the gage isto swing the end of the fitting with the ring gage attachedthrough an arc of approximately 4 to 6 in. (100 to 150 mm) toallow the gage to strike against a solid metal surface. Thistapping procedure is used to eliminate any binding due to slightnicks or foreign matter in the threads.NOT
34、E 2Any mechanical device that simulates the gage tapping orrapping to achieve the same results is also permitted.5.4 The inspector representing the purchaser shall haveentry, at all times while work on the contract of the purchaseris being performed, to all parts of the manufacturers worksthat conce
35、rn the manufacture of the nipples ordered. Themanufacturer shall afford the inspector all reasonable facilitiesto satisfy him that the nipples are being furnished in accor-dance with this specification. Rejection6.1 Each nipple that fails to meet the requirement of thisspecification shall be rejected, and the manufacturer notified.7. Certification7.1
41、When requested at the time the order is placed, themanufacturer shall provide certification that the nipples complyto all the requirements of this specification.7.2 The nipple manufacturer shall maintain a record on pipemill test report certifications.8. Identification and Packaging8.1 Individual ni
42、pples are not normally identified. Packagednipples shall have their containers legibly marked to show thebrand or name of manufacturer, size, length, quantity, methodof pipe manufacture, type and grade of material (if other thancarbon steel), ASTM A 733, and finish.8.2 At manufacturers option, large
43、 size, extra long nipples,and odd lots are bagged or bundled with tags identifying theproduct in accordance with 8.1.9.
