、d these conditions to a minimum.5.2 The coating material shall meet the requirements listedin Annex A1 and shall be approved by the purchaser.5.2.1 A written certification shall be furnished to the pur-chaser that properly identifies the batch designation of thepowder coating used in the order, mate

、rial, quantity repre-sented, date of manufacture, name and address of manufac-turer, and a statement that the supplied powder coating is thesame composition as that prequalifed to Annex A1 of thisspecification. The powder coating shall be used within themanufacturers written recommended shelf life.5

Surface Preparation6.1 Prior to blast cleaning, the surfaces of steel H-piles andsheet piling to be coated shall be precleaned, as required, inaccordance with

、SSPC-SP 1. Steel surfaces shall be cleaned byabrasive blast cleaning to near-white metal in accordance withSSPC-SP 10. The cleaning media used shall produce an anchorpattern profile of 1.5 mils to 4.0 mils 40 to 100 m. The visualstandard of comparison used to define the final surface condi-tion shal

、l be SSPC-VIS 1 or TM0175. Expended blastingmedia debris and dust shall be removed from blasted surfacesprior to applying coating.6.2 Prior to application of the fusion-bonded epoxy coating, raised slivers, scabs, laps, sharp edges, or seams shall beremoved using abrasive grinders. No individual area

、 of grind-ing shall exceed 36 in.2230 cm2. Total area of grinding shallnot exceed 1 % of total surface area.6.3 Slivers raised during the cleaning or coating applicationprocess shall be treated as permissible coating damage andrepaired in accordance with Section 11.6.4 It shall be permissible for a

、chemical wash and/orconversion of the steel H-piles or sheet piling surface to beused. This pretreatment shall be applied after abrasive blastcleaning and before coating, in accordance with the writtenapplication instructions specified by the pretreatment manufac-turer.7. Application of Coating7.1 T

、he powder coating shall be applied to the cleaned andpretreated (if applicable) surface as soon as possible and beforevisible oxidation of the surface occurs, as discernible to aperson with normal or corrected vision. In no case shallapplication of the coating be delayed more than 3 h aftercleaning.

、7.2 To achieve the required coating thickness (see 8.1), thesteel shall be preheated prior to applying the powder coating inaccordance with the manufacturers written recommendations. The heat source shall not leave a residue or contaminant on thesteel surfaces. If oxidation occurs, the steel shall be

、 cooled toambient temperature and recleaned before applying the powdercoating.7.3 The powder coating shall be applied and cured inaccordance with the powder coating manufacturers writtenrecommendations.7.4 Areas of steel sections not requiring coating to allowwelding or for other purposes shall be s

、pecified by thepurchaser and shall be blocked-out during the coating applica-tion.8. Requirements for Coated H-Piles and Sheet Piling8.1 Thickness of Coating:8.1.1 The minimum thickness of coating after curing on flatsurfaces of H-piles and sheet piling shall be 12 mils 300 m.A950/A950M 112The minim

、um thickness of coating after curing on edges andcorners of sections, as measured on flat surfaces12 in. 13 mmfrom these edges and corners of sections, shall be a minimumof 7 mils 175 m. It shall be permissible for the coatingthickness to be reduced on the ball and socket of sheet piling.8.1.2 Measu

、rements shall be made in accordance with TestMethod G12 following the instructions for calibration and userecommended by the thickness gage manufacturer. Gages shallbe of the pull-off or fixed probe type, except that “pencil-type”pull-off gages, which require the operator to observe thereadings at t

、he instant the magnet is pulled from the surface, shall not be used.8.1.3 Thickness measurements on test sheet piling sectionsshall be taken on flat surfaces and corners of each side and edgeat 2 ft 0.6 m intervals along piling sections. Thicknessmeasurements on test H-piles shall be taken alternatel

、y on theedges of flanges, outside and inside of flat surfaces of flanges, intersection of flanges and web, and on each side of the web at2 ft intervals along H-pile sections.NOTE 4Powder coating overspray at interlock segments of sheetpiling is inherent to the coating process and should be considered

、 to beacceptable. A heavier coating thickness in these areas may result in theinability to join pieces.8.2 Continuity of Coating:8.2.1 Damaged or deficiently coated areas, as discernible toa person with normal or corrected vision, shall be patched inaccordance with the patching manufacturers written

、 recom-mendations.8.2.2 The applied coating after curing shall not have morethan an average of two holidays (pinholes not discernible to aperson with normal or corrected vision) per square foot 21holidays per square metre of the coated section,as determinedby dividing the total number of holidays fo

、r the individualsection checked by its total outside surface area.8.2.3 Holiday checks to determine acceptability shall bemade only at the manufacturers plant with a 67.5-V directcurrent, 80 000V wet sponge holiday detector.8.2.4 Holiday checks on test sheet piling sections shall bemade on flat surf

、aces and corners of each side and edge at 2 ft0.6 m intervals along piling sections. Holiday checks on testH-piles shall be taken alternately on the edges of flanges, outside and inside of flat surfaces of flanges, intersection offlanges and web, and on each side of the web at 2 ft intervalsalong pil

、e sections.8.3 Flexibility of the Coating:8.3.1 Flexibility of the coating shall be checked by bendingcoated test panels. Test panels shall be of the same thickness asthe respective sheet piling sections or H-pile flange and shall becoated along with these sections using the same applicationequipmen

、t and procedures.NOTE 5Bend tests to determine coating flexibility acceptance areintended to be performed at the manufacturers plant.8.3.1.1 Test panels shall be bent around a mandrel to aminimum of 1.5 total deflection (after rebound) at ambienttemperature in accordance with 5.3.3.1 of API RP 5L7.

、Theradius of the mandrel shall be calculated using the followingequation:R 5 37.7twhere:R = mandrel radius, andt = panel thickness including coating. When no mandrel of the calculated size is available, it shallbe permissible that a smaller radius mandrel be substituted.8.3.2 No cracking or disbondin

、g of the coating on theoutside radius of the test panels shall be discernible to a personwith normal or corrected vision. Except as specified in Section10, cracking or disbonding of the coating shall be cause forrejection of the coated H-piles or sheet piling represented bythe bend test panels.8.3.3

、 Fracture or failure of the steel in the bend test shall notbe considered a failure of the coating. Another test panel fromthe same production lot shall be substituted for repeat testing.8.4 All requirements for coated H-piles and sheet pilingshall be met at the manufacturers plant prior to shipment

、.9. Number of Tests9.1 Unless a higher number or higher frequency, or both, isspecified in the order, one test for coating thickness, continuity, and flexibility shall be made once every 4 h.10. Retests10.1 If any test specimen for coating thickness, continuity,or flexibility fails to meet the specif

、ied requirements, twofurther coated specimens from the same lot shall be subjectedto the test or tests in which the original sample failed. If bothadditional coated test specimens pass the retest, the lot fromwhich they were taken shall be deemed to meet the require-ments of this specification. If either of them fails, the lot shallbe deemed not to comply with this specification.10.2 If the lot does not comply with this specification, thelot immediately preceding and immediately following thenon-compliant lot shall have two test pilin
