Scope*1.1 This specification establishes the re

3、quirements for brassand copper pipe nipples in standard pipe sizes from18 to 8 in.,inclusive, in standard lengths, and chromium-plated pipenipples in standard pipe sizes from18 to 2 in., inclusive, instandard lengths.1.1.1 Chromium-plated pipe nipples ordered under thisspecification are intended for

4、 interior use in decorative appli-cations.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to addre

Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 For definitions of terms relating to copper a

8、nd copperalloys, refer to Terminology B8464. Ordering Information4.1 Contracts and purchase orders for product under thisspecification are to contain the following information:4.1.1 ASTM specification designation and year of issue,4.1.2 Type of material (Section 5),4.1.3 Weight of material; regular

9、or extra strong,4.1.4 Diameter; nominal or actual outside diameter,4.1.5 Length; standard or special (8.2 and Table 2), and4.1.6 Quantity; number of pieces or total weight of eachmaterial and size.4.2 The following options are available under this specifi-cation and are to be specified in the contra

10、ct or purchase orderwhen required:4.2.1 Chromium plated finish,4.2.2 Short Plumbing (hospital) threads,4.2.3 Certification (Section 16), and4.2.4 Test and Inspection Reports, if required (Section 17).4.3 In addition, when material is purchased for agencies ofthe U.S. government, it shall conform to

Materials and Manufacture5.1 Copper pipe nipples shall be pr

15、oduced from regular orextra strong pipe conforming to the requirements of Specifi-cation B42.5.2 Brass pipe nipples shall be produced from regular orextra strong pipe conforming to the requirements of Specifi-cation B43.5.3 Chromium-plated pipe nipples shall be produced fromregular weight brass pipe

16、 conforming to the requirements ofSpecification B43.6. Chemical Composition6.1 The chemical composition shall conform to the require-ments of the specification under which the pipe was ordered.7. Temper7.1 The product temper and its properties and characteristicsshall conform to the requirements of

17、the specification underwhich the pipe was ordered.8. Dimensions, Mass and Permissible Variations8.1 Lengths:8.1.1 The standard lengths and sizes of nipples generallyavailable are shown in Table 2. The availability of such nipplesindicated by pipe size are shown in Table 3.8.1.2 Special lengths and s

18、izes of nipples are permitted to bespecified when required. Standard and special lengths shallconform to the tolerance requirements of 8.1.3.8.1.3 TolerancesNipples with lengths up through 12 in.(305 mm) long shall have a length tolerance of 6116 in. (1.6mm). Nipples over 12 in. long shall have a to

19、lerance of 618 in.(3.2 mm).8.2 Threads:8.2.1 Pipe nipples shall be threaded on both ends with NPTTaper Pipe Threads conforming to the requirements of ANSIB1.20.1, except for close nipples where L4 and V are shorter,due to fewer imperfect threads. It is standard manufacturingpractice on all other nip

20、ple lengths to vary the L4 6 twothreads. All other dimensions, tolerances, and gaging practicesremain the same as ANSI B1.20.1, and the Annex.8.2.1.1 Threads shall be right hand on both ends, exceptwhen otherwise specified.8.2.2 Threads, Chromium-Plated NipplesThreads onchromium-plated nipples shall

21、 be gaged after plating. Threadson18 to 1-in. standard pipe size nipples shall be NPT TaperPipe Threads, in accordance with 8.2.1. Threads on 114 to 2-in.standard pipe size nipples shall be short plumbing (hospital)threads, in accordance with Table 1.On18 to 1-in. standardpipe size nipples, short pl

22、umbing (hospital) threads, if speci-fied, shall be in accordance with Table 1.9. Workmanship, Finish and Appearance9.1 End FinishThe ends of the pipe nipples shall bechamfered on the outside at an angle of 35 6 10 to the centralaxis. (It is standard practice that the18-in. nominal size nipplesneed n

23、ot be chamfered.) Ends shall be cut reasonably square tothe central axis. All burrs on the outside shall be removed.9.2 Chromium PlatingChromium plate on brass nipplesshall meet the requirements of service condition SC I ofSpecification B456, except the equivalent nickel thicknessshall be 0.003 mm.1

24、0. Sampling10.1 Arandom sample of pipe nipples shall be selected fromone production lot in accordance with MIL-STD-105 at In-spection Level II. In terms of defects per 100 units, theAcceptable Quality Level (AQL) shall be 1.5.10.1.1 Production LotA production lot shall be as deter-mined by the manuf

25、acturer, provided that all of the pipe usedin a single production lot shall comply with the provisions ofSection 5 and all of the nipples shall be of the same size,length, type, weight, finish, and thread form.11. Number of Tests and Retests11.1 Allowances for resampling and retesting shall be inacc

26、ordance with the Inspection Level and Acceptable QualityLevels detailed in 10.1.12. Significance of Numerical Limits12.1 For the purpose of determining compliance with thespecified limits for the requirements listed in the followingtable, an observed value shall be rounded as indicated inaccordance

27、with the rounding method of Practice E29:PropertyRounded Unit forObserved or Calculated ValueLinear DimensionsTolerancesnearest unit in the last right-hand significantdigit used in expressing the limiting value13. Inspection13.1 Each sample nipple shall be examined visually toverify conformance with

28、 each of the following requirements:13.1.1 The material is the type and weight of materialspecified,13.1.2 The finish is as specified, if chromium-plated,13.1.3 The ends are reasonably square to the central axisand all burrs have been removed, and13.1.4 Threads are not burred or damaged.13.2 Each sa

32、 (2011)213.2.1 Pipe size,13.2.2 Length,13.2.3 Thread dimensions, and13.2.4 Chamfer.13.3 Chromium PlatingUnless otherwise specificallyagreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser, theindividual samples need not be individually inspected as totheir chromium plating. It shall be sufficient fo

33、r the manufac-turer to certify that (a) random nipples from the chromiumplating process have been tested for conformance with Speci-fication B456 (which records shall be retained by the manu-facturer) and do in fact conform and (b) there has been nosignificant change in the chromium plating process

34、since thetests were last run.13.3.1 If inspection of the individual nipples is agreed upon,then it shall be conducted by any method allowed by Specifi-cation B456.13.4 PipeThe pipe from which each production lot ismanufactured shall be of the same size, type, and weight andshall be tested in accorda

35、nce with the applicable ASTM pipespecification. At the option of the manufacturer, the pipe maybe tested by the manufacturer, by the pipe mill that producedthe pipe, or by an independent laboratory.13.5 Source InspectionIf required, source inspection ofthe product by the purchaser shall be establish

36、ed by agreementbetween the manufacturer or supplier and purchaser at the timeof placing the order. In such cases, the nature of the facilitiesnecessary for the inspector to determine that the product is inconformance to this specification shall be included in theagreement. The inspection shall be co

37、nducted so as not tounnecessarily interfere with normal operations.14. Rejection and Rehearing14.1 Rejection:14.1.1 Product that fails to conform to the requirements ofthis specification when inspected by the purchaser or purchas-ers agent, shall be subject to rejection.14.1.2 Rejection shall be rep

38、orted to the manufacturer orsupplier promptly and in writing.14.1.3 In case of dissatisfaction with the results upon whichrejection is based, the manufacturer or supplier is permitted tomake claim for a rehearing.14.2 Rehearing:14.2.1 As a result of product rejection, the manufacturer orsupplier is

39、permitted to make claim for a retest to be conductedby the manufacturer or supplier and the purchaser. Samples ofthe rejected product shall be taken in accordance with thisproduct specification, and subjected to test by both partiesusing the test methods specified in the product specification, or,al

40、ternatively, upon agreement of both parties, an independentlaboratory shall be selected.15. Certification15.1 When specified in the contract or purchase order, thepurchaser shall be furnished certification that samples repre-senting each lot have been tested or inspected as directed in thisspecifica

41、tion and the requirements have been met.16. Test and Inspection Reports16.1 When specified in the contract or purchase order, areport of test and inspection results shall be furnished.17. Packaging and Package Marking17.1 Individual nipples are not normally identified. Nipplespackaged shall have the
