(0.0025 mm) and correspond to the standard sizesgiven in Specification B 258. In specifying diameters of wire or inspectingwire, the diameter should also be expressed t

、pearance6.1 The surface of the wire shall be free from imperfectionsand be consistent with good commercial practice.7. Tensile and Elongation Properties7.1 The wire shall conform to a minimum tensile require-ment of 120 000 psi (827 MPa) and a minimum elongationrequirement of 1.0 %.7.2 Tension tests
、 shall be made on representative samples.Unless otherwise agreed upon between the manufacturer andthe purchaser, the elongation shall be determined by measure-ments made between the jaws of the testing machine. The zerolength shall be the distance between the jaws when a load equalto 10 % of the spe
、cified tensile strength has been applied, andthe final length shall be the distance between the jaws at thetime of rupture. The zero length shall be as near 10 in. (254mm) as practicable. The fracture shall be between the jaws ofthe testing machine and not closer than 1 in. (25.4 mm) toeither jaw. T
、he elongation as thus determined shall not be lessthan 1.0 %. See Table 2 for related breaking strengths.7.3 When agreed upon between the manufacturer and thepurchaser, the elongation may be measured by means of anextensometer suitable for measuring elongation in 10 in. (250mm) and having a vernier
、reading to 0.01 in. (0.25 mm)attached to the test specimen at a tension load of approximately10 % of rated strength. The elongation as thus determined shallnot be less than 1.0 %. If the fracture occurs before the 1.0 %elongation requirement and outside the two attachments of theextensometer to the
、specimen, this sample shall be disregardedand a retest shall be performed.7.4 RetestIf, upon testing a sample from any coil or spoolof wire, the results do not conform to the tensile requirementsprescribed in 7.1 and the elongation requirements of 7.4, twoadditional samples shall be tested, and the
、average of the threetests shall determine the acceptance or rejection of the coil orspool.NOTE 3The approximate properties of 21 % conductivity hard drawncopper-clad steel wire are shown in Table 1 for the information of the userof this specification.8. Torsion Test8.1 The wire shall withstand, with
、out fracture, not less than20 torsions in a length equivalent to 100 times the nominaldiameter of the specimen. In the twist test, the rate of applyingthe twists shall be approximately 15/min.8.2 Specimens shall be twisted to destruction and shall notreveal under testing any seams, pits, slivers, or
、 surface imper-fections of sufficient magnitude to indicate inherent defects orimperfections in the wire.8.2.1 Examination of the wire at the break shall show noseparation of copper from the steel.9. Resistance9.1 The electrical resistance of the wire (Note 4) shall bedetermined by resistance measur
、ements, and maximum resis-tance shall be based on the minimum diameter of the wire andresistivity value at 20C V cmil/ft of 49.39. This is tocorrespond to a minimum conductivity of 21 % IACS.NOTE 4Electrical resistance is calculated by the following equation:maximum resistance V/ft!5resistivity, V3c
、ircular mil/ftminimum diameter, mil!29.2 The maximum resistance values are given in Table 1.9.3 When resistance measurements are made at tempera-tures other than 20C, corrections shall be based on a tempera-ture coefficient of resistance of 0.0038/C.9.4 Tests to determine conformance to the electric
、al resis-tance requirements of Table 1 shall be made in accordance withTest Method B 193.10. Uniformity of Copper Cladding10.1 At no point around the circumference of the wireshould the copper thickness be less than that shown in Table 1.The minimum copper thickness expressed as a percent of thewire
、 size shall be 1.5 % of the wire diameter or 0.015 times thediameter. The minimum copper thickness may be determinedby direct measurements of the cross section of the wire or bymeans of a suitable electrical indicating instrument operatingon the permeameter principle. Direct measurement shall betake
、n from the ends of the coils for referee purposes.11. Joints11.1 There shall be no joints of any kind made in thefinished wire.11.2 Joints may be made in the rods or semifinished wiresprior to drawing to final size in accordance with good com-mercial practice.TABLE 2 Approximate Properties (Informat
