Ordering Information3.1 Orders for material under this specification shall

7、includethe following information:3.1.1 Quantity of each size,3.1.2 Wire size-diameter in inches (see 5.3 and Table 1),3.1.3 Type of copper, if special (see 4.2),3.1.4 Package size (see 10.1),3.1.5 Special packaging marking, if required, and3.1.6 Place of inspection (see 7.1).4. Material4.1 Tin for C

8、oatingThe tin shall be electroplated for thecoating and shall be commercially pure (Explanatory Note 1).For purposes of this specification, the tin shall be consideredcommercially pure if the total of other elements, exclusive ofcopper, does not exceed 1 %. Not withstanding the previoussentence, che

9、mical analysis of the tin coating or of the tin usedfor coating shall not be required under this specification.4.2 Copper-Base MetalThe base metal shall be copper ofsuch quality and purity that the finished product shall haveproperties and characteristics prescribed in this specification.NOTE 1Speci

10、fication B49defines copper suitable for use.5. General Requirements (See Section 8)5.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation (Explanatory Note4)The tinned wire shall conform to the requirements forelongation prescribed in Table 1. No requirements for tensilestrength are specified. For wire whose nominal d

11、iameter ismore than 0.001 in. (0.025 mm) greater than a size listed inTable 1, but less than that of the next larger size, therequirements of the next larger size shall apply.5.2 Resistivity (Explanatory Note 1 and Note 3)Theelectrical resistivity of tinned wire at a temperature of 20Cshall not exce

12、ed the values prescribed in Table 2.5.3 Dimensions and Permissible Variations (ExplanatoryNote 2)The wire sizes shall be expressed as the diameter ofthe wire in decimal fractions of an inch to the nearest 0.0001 in.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee B01 onElectrical Conduc

16、f CoatingThe tin coating shall be con-tinuous. The continuity of coating on the wire shall bedetermined on representative samples taken before stranding orinsulating. The continuity of tinning shall be determined by thehydrochloric acid-sodium polysulfide test in accordance with6.4.5.5 Thickness of

17、CoatingThe wire shall have adequatefree tin (Explanatory Note 1) to insure meeting solderabilityrequirements as prescribed in 5.8. The thickness of coatingshall be at the manufacturers discretion or as agreed uponbetween the manufacturer and purchaser to insure complianceto 5.8 and further processin

18、g for solderability performanceafter insulation.5.6 Adherence of CoatingThe tin coating shall be firmlyadherent to the surface of the copper. The adherence of coatingon the wire shall be determined on representative samplestaken after electroplating and prior to final drawing. Theadherence of coatin

19、g shall be determined by the wrapping testin accordance with 6.6.5.7 JointsNecessary joints in the completed wire and inthe wire and rods prior to final drawing shall be made inaccordance with the best commercial practice.5.8 SolderabilityThe solder must cover greater than 95 %of the surface of the

20、specimen and show evidence of goodwetting and of bonding. The solderability shall be tested inaccordance with 6.7.5.9 FinishThe coating shall consist of a smooth continu-ous layer, firmly adherent to the surface of the copper. The wireshall be free of all imperfections not consistent with the bestco

21、mmercial practice.6. Test Methods6.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation (Explanatory Note 4)6.1.1 No test for tensile strength shall be required.6.1.2 The elongation of wire with a nominal diametergreater than 0.0808 in. (2.052 mm) shall be determined as thepermanent increase in length due to the break

22、ing of the wire intension. The elongation shall be measured between gage marksplaced originally 10 in. (242 mm) apart upon the test specimenand expressed in percent of the original length.6.1.3 The elongation of wire with a nominal diameter equalto or less than 0.0808 in. (2.053 mm) may be determine

23、d asdescribed above or by measurements made between the jaws ofthe testing machine. When measurements are made betweenthe jaws, the zero length shall be the distance between the jawsat the start of the tension test and be as near 10 in. (254 mm)as practicable. The final length shall be the distance

24、betweenthe jaws at the time of rupture. The fracture shall be betweengage marks or jaws of the testing machine, depending onmethod used, and not closer than 1 in. The purchaser may accept certification thatthe wire was draw

33、n from rod stock meeting the internationalstandard for annealed copper instead of resistivity tests on thefinished wire.6.3 Dimensional MeasurementsDimensional measure-ments shall be made with a micrometer caliper equipped witha vernier graduated in 0.0001 in. (0.0025 mm). Measurementsshall be made

34、on at least three places on each unit selected forthis test. If accessible, one measurement shall be taken on eachend and one near the middle. The average of the threemeasurements shall determine compliance with the require-ments.6.4 Continuity of Coating:6.4.1 Length of SpecimensTest specimens shal

35、l have alength of about 6 in. (152 mm). They shall be tagged or markedto correspond with the coil, spool, or reel from which they werecut.6.4.2 Treatment of SpecimensThe specimens shall bethoroughly cleaned by immersion in a suitable organic solventfor at least 3 min; then removed and wiped dry with

36、 a clean,soft cloth (Caution: see Explanatory Note 5). The specimensthus cleaned shall be kept wrapped in a clean, dry cloth untiltested. That part of the specimen to be immersed in the testsolution shall not be handled. Care shall be taken to avoidabrasion by the cut ends.6.4.3 Special Solutions Re

37、quired:6.4.3.1 Hydrochloric Acid Solution (HCl) (sp gr 1.088)Commercial HCl (sp gr 1.12) shall be diluted with distilledwater to a specific gravity of 1.088 measured at 15.6C (60F).A portion of HCl solution having a volume of 180 mL shall beconsidered to be exhausted when the number of test specimen

38、sprescribed in Table 4 of a size as indicated in 6.4.3 have beenimmersed in it for two cycles.6.4.3.2 Sodium Polysulfide Solution (sp gr 1.142) (Explana-tory Note 6)A concentrated solution shall be made bydissolving sodium sulfide crystals (cp) in distilled water untilthe solution is saturated at ab

39、out 21C (70F), and addingsufficient flowers of sulfur (in excess of 250 g/L of solution) toprovide complete saturation, as shown by the presence in thesolution of an excess of sulfur after the solution has beenallowed to stand for at least 24 h. The test solution shall bemade by diluting a portion o

40、f the concentrated solution withdistilled water to a specific gravity of 1.135 to 1.145 at 15.6C(60F). The sodium polysulfide test solution should havesufficient strength to blacken thoroughly a piece of cleanuntinned copper wire in 5 s. The test solution used for testingsamples shall be considered

41、exhausted if it fails to blacken apiece of clean copper as described above.6.4.4 Procedure:6.4.4.1 Immersion of SpecimensImmerse a length of atleast 4-1/2 in. (114 mm) from each of the clean specimens, inaccordance with the following cycles, in test solutions main-tained at a temperature between 15.

42、6 and 21C (60 and 70F):(1) Immerse the specimen for 1 min in the HCl solutiondescribed in 6.4.2, wash, and wipe dry; (2) immerse thespecimen for 30 s in the sodium polysulfide solution describedin 6.4.2, wash, and wipe dry; (3) immerse the specimen for 1min in the HCl solution, wash, and dry; (4) im

43、merse thespecimen for 30 s in the sodium polysulfide solution, wash, andwipe dry.6.4.4.2 Washing SpecimensAfter each immersion, imme-diately wash the specimens thoroughly in clean water and wipedry with a clean, soft cloth.6.4.4.3 Examination of SpecimensAfter immersion andwashing, examine the speci

44、mens to ascertain if copper exposedthrough openings in the tin coating has been blackened byaction of the sodium polysulfide. The specimens shall beconsidered to have failed if, by such blackening, exposedcopper is revealed. No attention shall be paid to blackeningwithin 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) of the cut

45、 end. A grayish brownappearance of the coating shall not constitute failure.6.5 Thickness of CoatingConformance to free tin require-ments may be determined in accordance with Test MethodAasprescribed in Appendix X1.6.6 Adherence of Coating:6.6.1 Specimens:6.6.1.1 Length of SpecimensTest specimens sh

46、all be ap-proximately 20 in. (508 mm) prior to wrapping and shall betagged or marked to correspond with the coil, spool, or reelfrom which they are cut.6.6.2 Procedure:6.6.2.1 WrappingSlowly wrap the test specimen in asuitable manner in an open helix around its own diameter. Takecare not to stretch

47、the specimen during the wrapping operation.The spacing of the consecutive turns shall be approximatelyequal to the diameter of the wire. An appropriate number ofwraps shall be made so that a sample no less than eight inchesin length will be obtained.6.6.2.2 Examination of SpecimensVisually examine0.

48、0428 in. (1.09 mm) and smaller test specimens at 320magnification. Test specimens larger than 0.0428 in. (1.09 mm)shall be examined at 310 magnification.
