Ordering Information3.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:3.1.1 Quantity of each size,3.1.2 Wire size-thickness and width in inches (see 5.4),3.1.3 Class of wire (see 1.2),3.1.4 Type of copper, if spe

Material4.1 The material shall be silver-coated flat wire (Explana-tory Note 1) of such quality and purity that the finished productshall meet the properties and chara

9、cteristics prescribed in thisspecification.4.2 Copper-Base MetalThe base metal shall be copper ofsuch quality and purity that the finished product shall haveproperties and characteristics prescribed in this specification.NOTE 1Specifications B1, B3,orB49 define copper suitable for use.5. General Req

10、uirements (See Section 8)5.1 TemperThe silver-coated flat wire conductor shall beprovided in either hard-drawn condition (Class H) or annealedcondition (Class A) as agreed upon between the manufacturerand purchaser.5.2 Tensile and Elongation (Explanatory Note 2):5.2.1 Class AThe silver-coated copper

11、 flat wire in theannealed condition shall conform to the elongation require-ments prescribed in Table 1. See Explanatory Note 3 forequivalent round diameter calculations based on given thick-ness and width dimensions for the flat wire. For flat wire whosenominal equivalent round diameter is more tha

12、n 0.001 in.(0.025 mm) greater than a size listed in Table 1, but less thanthat of the next larger size, the requirements of the next largersize shall apply. No requirements for tensile strength arespecified.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee B01 onElectrical Conductors and

United States15.2.2 Class HThe silver-coated copper flat wire in thehard-drawn condition shall conform to elongation requirementsof 1 % minimum to 5 % maximum. The tensile s

16、trength shallbe 55,000 psi (379 MPa) minimum.5.3 Resistivity (Explanatory Note 4)The electrical resis-tivity of the coated wire at a temperature of 20C shall notexceed the values prescribed in Table 2.5.4 Dimensions and Permissible VariationsThe flat wiresizes shall be expressed as the thickness and

17、 width of the wirein decimal fractions of an inch to the nearest 0.0001 in. (0.0025mm). The silver-coated flat wire shall not vary from thespecified thickness and width by more than the amountsspecified in Table 3 and Table 4, respectively.5.5 Continuity of CoatingThe silver coating shall becontinuo

18、us. The continuity of coating on the flat wire shall bedetermined on representative samples taken before braidingapplications or insulating. The continuity of coating shall bedetermined by the hydrochloric acid-sodium polysulfide test inaccordance with 6.4. Wire whose coating weight correspondsto a

19、thickness less than 40 in. (0.00004 in.) shall not besubject to this test (Explanatory Note 5). The thickness ofcoating shall be determined in accordance with Test Method Aas prescribed in Appendix X1.5.6 JointsNecessary joints in the wire and rods prior tofinal coating and drawing shall be made in

20、accordance with thebest commercial practice. There shall be no uncoated joints inthe final product.5.7 FinishThe coating shall consist of a smooth continu-ous layer, firmly adherent to the surface of the copper. The wireshall be free of all imperfections not consistent with the bestcommercial practi

21、ce.6. Test Methods6.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation (Explanatory Note 6):6.1.1 The tensile strength, expressed in pounds per squareinch, shall be obtained by dividing the maximum load carriedby the specimen during the tension test by the originalcross-sectional area of the specimen. Tensile streng

22、th andelongation may be determined simultaneously on the samespecimen.6.1.2 The elongation shall be determined as the permanentincrease in length, expressed in percent of the original length,due to the wire breaking in tension. The elongation of the flatwire may be determined by measurements made be

23、tween thejaws of the tensile testing machine. The zero length shall be thedistance between the jaws at the start of the tension test and beas near 10 in. (254 mm) as practicable. The final length shall bethe distance between the jaws at the time of rupture. Thefracture shall be between the jaws of t

24、he testing machine andnot closer than 1 in. (25.4 mm) to the jaw.6.2 Resistivity (Explanatory Note 4)The electrical resis-tivity of the material shall be determined in accordance withTest Method B193. The purchaser may accept certification thatthe wire was drawn from rod stock meeting the internatio

30、040(0.102)B971 10 (2014)26.3 Dimensional MeasurementsDimensional measure-ments for width and thickness shall be made with a micrometercaliper equipped with a vernier graduated in 0.0001 in. (0.0025mm). Measurements shall be made on at least three places oneach unit selected for this test. Any measur

31、ement takenexceeding the dimensions and permissible variation require-ments in 5.4 shall constitute failure to meet the dimensionalconformance criterion.6.4 Continuity of Coating:6.4.1 Specimens:6.4.1.1 Length of SpecimensTest specimens shall eachhave a length of about 6 in. (152 mm). They shall be

32、tagged ormarked to correspond with the coil, spool, or reel from whichthey were cut.6.4.1.2 Treatment of SpecimensThoroughly clean thespecimens by immersion in a suitable organic solvent for atleast 3 min; then remove and wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth(Caution: See Explanatory Note 7). Keep the s

33、pecimens thuscleaned wrapped in a clean, dry cloth until tested. Do nothandle that part of the specimen to be immersed in the testsolution. Take care to avoid abrasion by the cut ends.6.4.2 Special Solutions:6.4.2.1 Sodium Polysulfide Solution (sp gr 1.142)Make aconcentrated solution by dissolving s

34、odium sulfide crystals(cp) in distilled water until the solution is saturated at about21C, and adding sufficient flowers of sulfur (in excess of 250g/L of solution) to provide complete saturation, as shown bythe presence in the solution of an excess of sulfur after thesolution has been allowed to st

35、and for at least 24 h. Make thetest solution by diluting a portion of the concentrated solutionwith distilled water to a specific gravity of 1.135 to 1.145 at15.6C. The sodium polysulfide test solution should havesufficient strength to blacken thoroughly a piece of cleanuncoated copper wire in 5 s.A

36、portion of the test solution usedfor testing samples shall not be considered to be exhausteduntil it fails to blacken a piece of clean copper as described(Explanatory Note 8):6.4.2.2 Hydrochloric Acid Solution (sp gr 1.088)Dilutecommercial HCl (sp gr 1.12) with distilled water to a specificgravity o

37、f 1.088 measured at 15.6C. A portion of the HClsolution having a volume of 180 mL shall be consideredexhausted if it fails to remove within 15 s the discoloration ofthe silver due to the polysulfide immersion.6.4.3 Procedure:6.4.3.1 Immersion in Polysulfide SolutionImmerse alength of at least 4.5 in

(114 mm) from each of the cleanspecimens for 30 s in the sodium polysulfide solution, de-scribed in 6.4.2.1, maintained at a temperature between 15.6and 21C.6.4.3.2 WashingAfter the immersion, thoroughly wash thespecimens in clean water and wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth.6.4.3.3 Immersion in Hy

39、drochloric AcidAfter washing,immediately immerse the specimen 15 s in the HCl solutiondescribed in 6.4.2.2, thoroughly wash in clean water, and wipedry with a clean, soft cloth.6.4.3.4 Examination of SpecimensAfter immersion andwashing examine the specimens to ascertain if copper exposedthrough open

40、ings in the silver coating has been blackened byaction of the sodium polysulfide. Examine the specimen withthe unaided eye (normal spectacles excepted) against a whitebackground. The specimens shall be considered to have failedif, by such blackening exposed copper is revealed. No attentionshall be p

41、aid to blackening within 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) of the cutend.6.5 FinishSurface-finish inspection shall be made with theunaided eye (normal spectacles excepted).7. Inspection7.1 General (Explanatory Note 9)Unless otherwise speci-fied in the contract or purchaser order, the manufacturer shallbe responsibl

42、e for the performance of all inspection and testrequirements specified.7.1.1 All inspections and tests shall be made at the place ofmanufacture unless otherwise especially agreed upon betweenthe manufacturer and the purchaser at the time of purchase.7.1.2 The manufacturer shall afford the inspector

43、represent-ing the purchaser all reasonable manufacturers facilities tosatisfy him that the material is being furnished in accordancewith this specification.7.1.3 Unless otherwise agreed upon between the purchaserand the manufacturer, conformance of the wire to the variousrequirements listed in Secti

44、on 5 shall be determined on samplestaken from each lot of wire presented for acceptance.7.1.4 The manufacturer shall, if requested prior toinspection, certify that all wire in the lot was made under suchconditions that the product as a whole conforms to therequirements of this specification as deter

45、mined by regularlymade and recorded tests.7.2 Definitions Applicable to Inspection:7.2.1 lotAny amount of wire of one type and size pre-sented for acceptance at one time.7.2.2 SampleA quantity of production units (coils, reels,and so forth) selected at random from the lot for the purpose ofdetermini

46、ng conformance of the lot to the requirements of thisspecification.7.2.3 SpecimenAlength of wire removed for test purposesfrom any individual production unit of the sample.7.3 Sample Size (Explanatory Note 9)The number ofproduction units in a sample shall be as follows:7.3.1 A full (100 % inspection

47、) will be completed at everyset-up prior to running the order.7.3.2 For elongation, resistivity, dimensional measurements,continuity of coating, and thickness of coating determinations,the sample shall consist of sequential production units from thelot.7.3.3 For surface-finish inspection and for pac

48、kaging in-spection (when specified by the purchaser at the time of placingthe order) the sample shall consist of sequential productionunits from the lot.8. Conformance Criteria (Explanatory Note 9)8.1 Any lot of wire, the samples of which comply with theconformance criteria of Section 5, shall be co

49、nsidered ascomplying to the requirements of this standard. IndividualB971 10 (2014)3production units that fail to meet one or more of the require-ments shall be rejected. If a failure of an individual productionunit occurs, material which was made between the non-conforming unit and the last production unit which passed theconformance criteria must be inspected for the non-conformingcharacteristic.9. Density (Explanatory Note 10)9.1 For the purpose of calculating linear densities, crosssections, etc., the density of the copper shall be take
