Ive come to talk to you about the development of some legendary car brands. Jaguar opened its doors in 1922 as Swallow Sidecars, making motorcycles sidecars. In 194

11、5, recognising the dangers of marketing an “SS“ car in postwar Britain, the company changed its name, and soon experienced what many see as its finest hour with the introduction of the Jag XK120 in 1948. In 1960, Jaguar began gobbling up smaller companies, until it became British Leyland, Britains l

12、argest car manufacturer. But the growth came largely at the expense of the Jaguar brand: it was acquired in 1989 by Ford, which resold it in 2008 having never once shown a profit to the Tata group, the Indian conglomerate that also produces the $ 2,500 Tata Nano, the worlds cheapest car. Rolls-Royce

13、 was started in 1904 by engineer Henry Royce and salesman Charles Rolls. The car ran remarkably quietly, earning it the nickname the Silver Ghost as early as 1907. More than any other make, the Rolls was designed not for the pleasure of the driver who was usually in the owners employ but for the com

14、fort of the passenger. Thanks to its airplane business, Rolls-Royce avoided going under in the Great Depression when it absorbed Bentley Motors. The company was nationalised in 1971, and the motors division was resold in 1980. VW thought that it had bought both brands in 1998. But while it controls

15、Bentley and some Rolls trademarks, the actual Rolls name was quietly sold separately. Volvo was funded in part by a Swedish ball-bearing company(the name is Latin for “I roll“)before becoming independent in 1935. The company favoured automobiles of sturdy construction that could withstand the Scandi

16、navian winters, and it pioneered numerous safety features, creating a reputation that led the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 1976 to buy a fleet of Volvos that it used to set national safety standards in the U. S. Volvo engineers generally overlooked matters of style in their ques

17、t for safety, except in the case of the P1800, a fashionable design that was adopted as the car of choice on the TV series The Saint. In 1999, the company was bought by Ford, where it evolved into more of a luxury brand, competing with the likes of Audi and BMW. Recently, at least two Chinese manufa

18、cturers state-run Beijing Auto Group and privately held Geely Automobile Holdings have expressed interest in buying Volvo from Ford. My short talk today is about conflicts: what are conflicts, and how to deal with conflicts and different types of conflicts. As we all know, it is not easy to get a-long

21、well with others, especially colleagues. We often find that we are caught in various kinds of conflicts. Therefore, conflicts are normal in life, especially in professional life. A conflict is a problematic situation between at least two parties, where each party wishes its own interest will be fulf

22、illed and thinks that this will happen at the cost of the other. Since conflicts can easily damage the staff relationship, it is advisable to tackle conflicts rapidly. The supervisor should understand the art of preventing the escalation of conflicts, in a professional manner, by putting the problem

23、s open to discussion. Next comes the question “ how to deal with conflicts in a professional way“. First, ask both parties to remain calm. Then find a suitable place where you can sit down and talk. Listen to what the employees say and try to pick up any underlying causes of unhappiness or stress. I

24、f necessary, question the employees in a calm way, put them at ease and give them the chance to speak freely. At last, the supervisor should say in other words what the employees said so that problems can be seen in a different way with focus on what would be a reasonable outcome for everyone! There

25、 are three types of conflicts. In all cases, the supervisor can be an outsider or one of the two parties in the conflict(with the employees, a colleague, a superior, an outsider), and can be involved directly or indirectly. When the supervisor is an outsider and the conflict remains limited to a dis

26、agreement, the best way is to talk it over! Dont try to ignore or cover the disagreement for it may evolve into a crisis out of control. Sometimes, the supervisor has been directly involved. Under this condition, both parties are supposed to let off steam and put emotions in words. They should say w

27、hat the error of the other is and what should be changed very concretely. After that, they can negotiate to what both are prepared together and make arrangements and possibly fix these. In the last case, the supervisor has been indirectly involved. Now, it is time for you to exert your power and inf

28、luence to arbitrate. Youd better call upon laws, appointments, principles and traditions. The next step is to mediate. When you try to mediate, pay attention, the bottleneck is often the beginning of the conversation which one of the parties does not wish to talk. At that time, the following argumen

29、ts might be helpful: “What if we do not talk?“ or “Its not a question of right or wrong, but of working together.“ Though these tips can help to deal with conflicts, you should always be a-ware that prevention is better than cure. That is, you can avoid an escalation but it is easier to prevent a co

30、nflict.
