More and more, the operations of our businesses, governments, and financial institutions are controlled by information that exists only inside computer memories. Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his purpose can reap substantial rewards. Even w

2、orse, a number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get away without punishment. 2. Its easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but wit

3、h a growing recommendation from his former employers. Of course, we have no statistics on crime that go undetected. But its disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who hav

4、e been caught may have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck. 3. For example, a certain keypunch operator complained of having to stay overtime to punch extra cards. Investigation revealed that the extra cards she was being asked to punch were for dishonest transactions. In another case, dissatisf

5、ied employees of the thief tipped off the company that was being robbed. 4. Unlike other lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and

6、perhaps other benefits. 5. All too often, their demands have been met. Why? Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled t

7、he most confidential records right under the noses of the companys executives, accountants, and security staff. In the one case the experience was direct and impressive; in the other it was indirect and accumulative. The Nazis were filled la

14、rgely with the speeches they heard and the books they read. 3. The classroom teacher in the elementary school is in a strategic position to influence attitudes. This is true partly because children acquire attitude from those adults whose word they respect. 4. Another reason is that pupils often stu

15、dy somewhat deeply a subject in school that has only been touched upon at home or has possibly never occurred to them before. To a child who had previously acquired little knowledge of Mexico, his teachers method of handling such a unit would greatly affect his attitude toward Mexicans. 5. The media

16、 which the teacher can develop healthy attitudes are innumerable. Social studies(with special reference to races, beliefs and nationalities), science matters of health and safety, the very atmosphere of the classroom, these are a few of the fertile fields for the education of proper emotional reacti

17、ons. 6. However, when children come to school with undesirable attitudes, it is unwise for the teacher to attempt to change their feelings by scolding them. She can achieve the poor effect by helping them obtain constructive experience. 7. To illustrate, first-grade pupils afraid of policemen will p

18、roperly alter their attitude after a classroom chat with the neighborhood officer in which he explains how he protects them. In the same way, a class of older children can develop attitudes through discussion, research, outside reading and all-day trips. 8. Finally, a teacher must constantly evaluat

19、e her own attitudes, because her influence can be harmful if she has personal prejudices. This is especially true in respect to controversial issues and questions on which children should be encouraged to reach their own decisions as a result of objective analysis of all the facts.
