、Designation: C639 01 (Reapproved 2011)Standard Test Method forRheological (Flow) Properties of Elastomeric Sealants1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C639; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year

、of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This test method describes a labor

、atory procedure forthe determination of rheological (flow) properties of single-and multicomponent chemically curing sealants for use inbuilding construction.1.2 Other suitable flow characteristics may be agreed uponbetween the seller and purchaser or specifier. Special nonsagproperties and lower fl

、ow characteristics may be required foruse in sloping joints where absolute leveling is not desired.NOTE 1The sealants are supplied in various rheological propertiesranging from pourable fluids to stiff nonsagging pastes. Multicomponentsealants are supplied as a base component with an activator or cu

、ringagent separately packaged. After mixing the multiple parts, the sealant isready for application. Single-component sealants are supplied ready foruse upon opening of the package and usually depend on the externalenvironment for cure.1.3 This test method describes four types of joint sealants:1.3.

、1 Type ISingle-component flowable or self-leveling,1.3.2 Type IISingle-component nonsag,1.3.3 Type IIIMulticomponent flowable or self-leveling,and1.3.4 Type IVMulticomponent nonsag.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informatio

Significance and Use5.1 The results obtained from this test method are simply ameasure of the degree of horizontal or vertical flow ofsingle-compon

Apparatus6.1 Refrigerator, controlled at 4.4 6 2C (40 6 3.6F).6.2 Oven, convention-type, controlled at 50 6 2C (1226

、 deep,152 mm long (34 by12 by 6 in.) with both ends open and theback surface extended 51 mm (2 in.) (see Fig. 1b).7. Standard Test Conditions7.1 Unless otherwise specified, standard conditions shall be23 6 2C (73.4 6 3.6F) and 50 6 5 % relative humidity.8. Procedures8.1 Test for Type I Sealants:8.1.

、1 Clean the closed-end channel (Fig. 1a) with methylethyl ketone or similar solvent followed by a thorough cleaningwith a detergent solution and a final rinse with distilled ordeionized water, and then air dry.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee C24 on BuildingSeals and Seal

、ed States.8.1.2 Before preparing the test assembly, condition at least100 g of the compound under test in the unopened container forat least 16 h at standard conditions. Then condition thecompound for 16 to 24 h and the channel for2hinarefrigerator held at 4.4 6 2C (40 6 3.6F). At the end of thecond

、itioning periods, pour the compound into the conditionedchannel held horizontally at the latter temperature and maintainthe test specimen at this temperature for 4 h. At the end of thisperiod, examine the compound for flow properties.8.2 Tests for Type II Sealants:8.2.1 Vertical SlumpBefore preparin

、g the test assemblies, condition the compound at standard conditions as described in8.1.2. Expose the two channels with open ends (Fig. 1b),cleaned as indicated in 8.1.1, for 2 h, one at 4.4 6 2C (40 63.6F) and the other at 506 2C (122 6 3.6F). At the end ofthis conditioning period, remove the channe

、ls from the respec-tive chambers and fill them with compound within 10 min. Thechannels may be filled with the aid of a spatula and shall betrimmed so that the sealant is flush with the face and ends ofthe channels. Return the filled channels to their respectivechambers, placing them in a vertical p

、osition, with the 51-mm(2-in.) extension at the bottom for 4 h. At the end of this periodremove the channels from the chambers and measure, to thenearest 1.5 mm (116 in.), the distance that the bottom edge ofsealant moves downward along the 51-mm extended backsurface. This distance is the sag of the

、 compound.8.2.2 Horizontal SlumpRepeat the procedure described in8.2.1 with the following change: after filling the channels, return them to their respective chambers, placing them in ahorizontal position resting on the 13-mm (12-in.) side. At theend of the exposure period, remove the channels from t

、hechambers and note any change in the configuration of thecompound in the channels.8.3 Test for Type III SealantsThe test procedure shall bethe same as that described in 8.1 with the following exception:After conditioning the base and curing agent separately for 16to 24 h and the channel for2hinther

、efrigerator, remove andhand mix them for at least 5 min. Return the mixed compoundto the cold box for an additional 30 min. Then pour thecompound into the horizontal channel and proceed as describedin 8.1.2. Examine the compound for flow properties.8.4 Tests for Type IV Sealants:8.4.1 Vertical Slump

、Test as in 8.2.1 with the followingexception: Immediately before removing the conditioned chan-nels from the refrigerator and oven, hand mix at least 200 g ofthe base compound and the appropriate amount of curing agentfor 5 min. Fill the channels within 10 min (or longer ifspecified by the manufactu

、rer) and proceed as in 8.2.At the endof the test, measure the sag to the nearest 1.5 mm (116 in.).8.4.2 Horizontal SlumpFollow the procedure described in8.4.1 with the change indicated in 8.2.2.9. Report9.1 Report the following information:9.1.1 Name or other identification of the sealant.9.1.2 Flow

、 Test:9.1.2.1 Whether Type I or III sealant was used,9.1.2.2 Whether the compound self-leveled in channel, and9.1.2.3 Any other surface conditions such as bubbling.9.1.3 Sag Test:9.1.3.1 Whether Type II or Type IV sealant was used,9.1.3.2 Amount of sag of the compound when placed in thevertical posi

、tion, to the nearest 1.5 mm (116 in.), and9.1.3.3 Any change in the configuration of the compoundwhen placed in the horizontal position.9.1.4 Variations in Test MethodAny variation from thespecified test procedure.NOTE 2Unusual application conditions or use of heat applied sealantsmay require variat

、ion in testing time or temperature. There also may benecessary variations in positioning of channels other than strictly hori-zontal or vertical. These may be determined by agreement and reportedaccordingly under 9.1.4.10. Precision and Bias310.1 The statistics for this test method are based on four

、materials tested once in two laboratories. This does not makerigorous statistical treatment possible, but approximations canbe made. The conclusions is that at 95 % confidence, avariation of no more than 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) should occur.11. Keywords11.1 flow; rheology; sag3Supporting data are availab
