、4. Summary of Test Method4.1 A mortar is prepared with the cement to be tested, usingstipulated quantities of cement and water, and sufficient stan-dard sand to produce a required consistency as determined bya stipulated penetration using the plunger of the modified Vicatapparatus. Mortar of the pro

、per consistency is then tested fortime of setting, using the needle of the modified Vicatapparatus for the determination of a stipulated penetration. Thetime required to obtain the stipulated penetration of themodified Vicat needle is the time of setting.5. Significance and Use5.1 The purpose of thi

、s test method is to establish whetheror not a cement complies with a specification limit on time ofsetting. It has been found to be particularly applicable for thedetermination of the setting time of expansive cements (seeSpecification C 845).6. Apparatus6.1 Tamper and Trowel, conforming to the requ

Procedure10.1 Preparation of Mortar:10.1.1 Mix 750 g of cement, 375 mL of water, and thequantity of graded standard sand required to give the consis-tency specified below under “Test for Consistency” in accor-dance with the mortar mixing procedure

、described in PracticeC 305.10.1.2 Upon completion of mixing, place a layer of mortarabout 20 mm in thickness in the mold and puddle with thetamper. Hold the tamper with the 25-mm side parallel to theradius of the mold for 14 strokes spaced equally around theoutside of the mold. Apply an additional f

、our strokes to thecenter of the specimen with the longitudinal axis of the tamperat the center of the mold and rotate the tamper 45 betweeneach stroke. Then fill the mold to overflowing with mortar andpuddle as specified for the first layer. Cut off the mortar to aplane surface flush with the top of

、 the mold in two operations.First, with the trowel held at about a 20 angle, start at one sideof the mold, 10 mm above the mold, and finish the stroke bycutting the mortar off the top of the mold at the opposite side.Second, starting from the opposite direction, cut the mortarflush with the top of t

、he mold by drawing the straight edge ofthe trowel (held nearly perpendicular to the mold) with asawing motion across the top of the mold.10.2 Test for ConsistencyCenter the mortar confined inthe mold under the movable rod of the modified Vicatapparatus described above. Bring the plunger in contact w

、iththe surface of the mortar and tighten the setscrew. Then set themovable indicator to the upper zero mark on the scale, or takean initial reading, and release the rod 35 to 50 s after startingto fill the mold. The mortar shall have the desired consistencywhen the rod settles to a point 20 6 4 mm b

、elow the originalsurface 30 s after being released. Cover the bowl containing theremainder of the mortar with the lid while the consistency testis being made. Make trial mortars with varying percentages ofstandard sand until the desired consistency is obtained.10.3 Test for Time of SettingMix the mo

、rtar remaining inthe bowl at medium speed (285 6 10 rpm) for 30 s after it hasbeen found that the mortar has the proper consistency. Follow-ing the completion of the mixing, mold the test specimen asspecified above. Immediately after molding, place the testspecimen in the moist closet or moist room

、where it shallremain except when penetration tests are being made. Allowthe time of setting specimen to remain in the moist closet ormoist room for 30 min without being disturbed. Then, using themodified Vicat apparatus described above, bring the needle incontact with the surface of the mortar and t

、ighten the setscrew.Set the movable indicator to the upper zero mark on the scale,or take an initial reading. Release the rod quickly by releasingthe setscrew, and allow the needle to settle for 30 s. Determinethe penetration of the needle at this time and every 30 minthereafter until the needle fai

、ls to penetrate to the bottom of themold. Then, take penetration tests every 10 min until apenetration of 10 mm or less is obtained. Perform no penetra-tion test closer than 10 mm from any previous penetration testor from the inside edge of the mold. Record the results of allpenetration tests, and,

、by interpolation, determine the timewhen a penetration of 10 mm is obtained. The difference, inminutes, between the time of contact of cement and water inthe mortar mixing procedure and the time a penetration of 10mm is obtained is the time of setting.10.4 PrecautionsMaintain testing apparatus on a

、rigidsurface, free of vibration during the penetration test. Do not oilthe plunger of the Vicat apparatus at any time, but keep theplunger and guide bearing clean at all times.C80708211. Calculation11.1 Calculate the time of setting to the nearest one minuteas follows:SSH E!C D!D3 C 10!D1 E (1)where

、:E = time in minutes of last penetration greater than 10 mm,H = time in minutes of first penetration less than 10 mm,C = penetration reading at Time E, andD = penetration reading at Time H.12. Report12.1 Report the time of setting in minutes, to the nearest oneminute.13. Precision and Bias13.1 The m

、ultilaboratory standard deviation has been foundto be 15.2 min. Therefore, the results of two properly con-ducted tests from two different laboratories on samples of thesame cement should not differ by more than 43 min.(See Note 1)13.2 No information can be presented on the bias of theprocedure in t
