1、Designation: D 1122 97a (Reapproved 2002)Standard Test Method forDensity or Relative Density of Engine Coolant Concentratesand Engine Coolants By The Hydrometer1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1122; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal

2、adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defens

3、e.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relativedensity of engine coolant concentrates and engine coolants.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all

4、 of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Apparatus5.1 HydrometersHydrometers shall be of glass, graduatedin specific gravity range as listed in Table 1, and shall conformto Specification E 100.5.2 Hydrometer CylinderThe hydrometer cylinder inwhich the sample for the relative density test is confined s

8、hallbe made of clear glass and shall be cylindrical in shape. Forconvenience in pouring, it may have a lip on the rim. Theinside diameter of the cylinder shall be at least 25.4 mm (1.0in.) greater than the outside diameter of the hydrometer. Theheight of the cylinder shall be such that the length of

Sampling6.1 Sample the coolant in accordance with Test MethodD 1176, except as specified in this test method.7. Procedure7.1 If

11、 the coolant has a small amount of separated upperlayer, remove it before determining the relative density of thelower layer. To separate, pour the sample into a 500-mLseparatory funnel, allow to stand for3hatroom temperaturebut not below 20C (68F), and then draw off the lower layer.7.2 If the origi

12、nal coolant is homogeneous, no separationwill be required.7.3 Cool the homogeneous sample or the separated lowerlayer sample to about 14C (57F). Pour the sample into theclean, dry hydrometer cylinder without splashing, so as toreduce to a minimum the formation of air bubbles (see Note 1).Place the c

Remove any airbubbles by touching them with a clean, dry glass rod.7.4 The hydrometer is read in the following ways: If thesample is sufficiently transparent, p

If the sample is opaque, read thepoint on the hydrometer scale to which the sample rises abovethe main surface of the

Correct thisreading by an amount equal to the height to which the samplerises on the hydrometer stem above the main liquid surface. This height will vary for different coolants and differenthydrometers, and the correcti
