Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:4.1.1 Specification designati
18、on number and year of issue,4.1.2 Size to be furnished (see 6.1),4.1.3 Quantity required,4.1.4 Type of aggregate, as covered in the scope of thisspecification. If the type is not specified, no type shall beprohibited. In the case of crushed gravel, if the percentage ofparticles with fracture faces d
19、esired is different than thatspecified in 5.3, the minimum percentage desired shall bespecified, and4.1.5 Any special requirements.5. Physical Requirements5.1 DegradationThe aggregate (with the exception ofcrushed blast-furnace slag) when subjected to testing in accor-dance with Test Method C131 sha
20、ll have a loss not greater than40 %, by mass.5.2 Density:5.2.1 SlagCrushed slag shall have a minimum density of1120 kg/m370 lb/ft3 as determined in accordance with TestMethod C29/C29M, rodding procedure.5.2.2 Expanded Shale, Expanded Clay, and ExpandedSlateThe coarse aggregate, when tested in size N
21、o. 57 or No.8, shall have a minimum density of 500 kg/m331 lb/ft3asdetermined in accordance with Test Method C29/C29M, shov-eling procedure.5.3 Crushed Pieces in AggregateNot less than 60 %, bymass, of the aggregate pieces retained on the 4.75-mm (No.4)sieve shall have at least two fractured faces (
22、see Test MethodD5821).NOTE 1Some sources of aggregate contain angular particles that willperform similarly to a mechanically crushed particle. Such angularparticles may be considered as crushed.5.4 SoundnessThe aggregate, when subjected to fivecycles of the soundness test, shall have a weighted loss
23、 notgreater than 12 % when sodium sulfate is used or 18 % whenmagnesium sulfate is used. If the salt is not designated by thepurchaser, the aggregate will not be prohibited if it meets theindicated limit for the salt used.5.5 Deleterious SubstancesThe requirements prescribedin Table 1 apply to all a
24、ggregate types covered in the scope ofthis specification except as noted. The limits for clay lumps andfriable particles, and for material floating on a liquid with aspecific gravity of 2.0, shall be based on the portion of thesample retained on a 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve.6. SELECTION OF AGGREGATE SIZESX1.1 The size of the aggregate will vary with the thicknessof the surface course desired and with the type of constructioncontem
30、plated, as described in the following statements:X1.1.1 Single Surface TreatmentA single surface treat-ment is a wearing surface of bituminous material and aggregatein which the aggregate is placed uniformly over the appliedbituminous materials in a single layer, the thickness of whichapproximates t
31、he nominal maximum size of the aggregateused.X1.1.2 Multiple Surface TreatmentsA multiple surfacetreatment is a wearing surface composed of bituminous mate-rial and aggregate, in which the coarser aggregate is placeduniformly over an initial application of bituminous materialand followed by subseque
32、nt applications of bituminous mate-rial and smaller aggregate. Generally, the designated maximumsize of the smaller aggregate is one half that of the aggregateused in the preceding application. Each application of aggre-gate should be placed uniformly in a single layer, the thicknessof which approxi
33、mates the nominal maximum size of theaggregate.X1.2 The standard sizes recommended for aggregates forseveral thicknesses and types of surface treatments are listed inTable X1.1.
