、Designation: D 1214 04Standard Test Method forSieve Analysis of Glass Spheres1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1214; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parent

、heses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the sieve analysis of glassspheres used for r

、etroreflective pavements markings and indus-trial uses.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is therespo

Summary of Test Method3.1 The spheres are hand-sieved through standard sieves, starting with the sieve with the largest opening specified andprogressing successively through the specified

Significance and Use4.1 The size or gradation of glass spheres is one measurableaspect of performance as a retroreflective media. The functionof this test is to me

、asure the size of glass spheres and todetermine compliance with applicable specifications.NOTE 1This method has been used in other industrial areas outsidethe intended scope of this test method.5. Samples6.1 By quartering or riffle sampling (Note 2), select arepresentative sample from the material to be tested. Take atleast two representative samples of approximately 500 g eachfrom se

、parate packages from each shipment in the ratio of twosamples for each 5000 kg (10 000 lb) or fraction thereof.Approximately 50 g (0.02 oz) of dry glass spheres are requiredfor each test. This specimen is also selected by quartering orriffling.NOTE 2The quartering procedure for reducing bulk samples

、, to obtainrepresentative test samples of suitable size, is described and illustrated inPractice D 346. Various types of riffle samplers are illustrated in PracticeD 2013.7. Procedure7.1 Hand Sieving:7.1.1 Dry the specimen to substantially constant weight at atemperature of 105 to 110 C.7.1.2 Weigh

、50 g of the dried glass spheres to the nearest 0.1g and place on the sieve with the largest opening in the seriesspecified for the test, which shall be thoroughly dry. Hold thesieve, with pan and cover attached, in one hand in a slightlyinclined position so that the specimen will be well distributed

、over the sieve, at the same time gently striking the side about150 times per minute against the palm of the other hand on theupstroke. Turn the sieve every 25 strokes about one sixth of arevolution in the same direction. Continue the operation untilnot more than 0.05 g passes through the sieve in 1

、min ofcontinuous sieving. Each time, before weighing the material1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paintand Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D01.44 on Traffic Coatings.Current edition approved Aug. 1, 200
