Scope*1.1 This test method covers a comparative procedur

3、e forobserving the characteristic and residual odors of volatileorganic solvents and diluents to determine their odor accept-ability in a solvent system.1.2 It is not intended that this test method be employed todetermine subtle odor differences between materials or todetermine odor intensity.1.3 It

4、 is recommended that this test method not be employedto determine the residual odor of a liquid if its time forevaporation to dryness at room temperature exceeds 30 min oras agreed upon.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thi

5、sstandard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use. For

Reference Standards2.1 Samples of the particular products being tested, havingodor characteristics satisfactory to purchaser and manufacturer,are required.3. Significan

7、ce and Use3.1 The comparative odor characteristics can be used, com-bined with other tests, for product identification and assessingcompliance with a specification.3.2 The residual odor characteristics can be used to judgethe presence of relatively nonvolatile materials that may beassociated with ma

8、nufacture or contamination during distribu-tion. Since volatile solvents and diluents are used in a widevariety of chemical processes and residual materials may affectthe efficiency of such processes, this test method provides acomparative test for manufacturing control and assessingcompliance with

9、a specification.4. Hazards4.1 Many solvents and diluents are hazardous or toxic. Takespecial precautions while determining the odor of all products.Make the tests only as frequently as is necessary for controland base the evaluations on short sniffs, inhaling as little vaporas possible.4.2 Provide a

10、dequate ventilation to maintain solvent ordiluent concentration below the personnel exposure limit valueestablished for the general work area as given in the MSDS.4.3 Other hazards may also be present. These may be, butare not limited to, flammable, combustible, corrosive, orexplosive hazards.5. Pro

11、cedures5.1 Characteristic OdorDip 25 by 75-mm strips of rapidqualititive paper, free of foreign odor, to a depth of 50 mm intothe specimen and the reference standard, each contained in abeaker or other suitable container. Make an immediate com-parison between the odor of the two materials on the fil

12、terpapers.5.2 Residual OdorDip 25 by 75-mm strips of a rapidqualitative paper, free of foreign odor, to a depth of 50 mm intothe specimen under test and the reference sample, eachcontained in a beaker or other suitable container. Permit thepapers to dry in air at room temperature and examine them at

13、suitable intervals for differences in odor (see 1.3). The evapo-ration step may be omitted if only the“ characteristic” odor ofthe material is to be determined.6. Report6.1 Characteristic OdorReport the odor as “characteris-tic” if, upon immediate examination, the odor of the wet filterpaper contain

14、ing the specimen is similar to the odor of the filterpaper containing the standard. United States1“noncharacteristic” if the odor of the specimen, compared withthe standard, is unsuitable for its intended solvent use.6.2 Residual OdorReport the odor as “nonresidual” if noodor is detectable on the s

17、ample paper after both the standardand sample papers appear dry. It is assumed that the standard,which is acceptable to both consumer and producer, has nodetectable residual odor. Report the odor as “residual” if anodor persists on the sample paper after none is detectable onthe standard paper.7. Pr

18、ecision and Bias7.1 PrecisionSince the result of the test is merely asubjective judgment of whether there is comparative similaritywith the reference standard specified in the procedure, nostatement is made about the precision of assessing eithercharacteristic or residual odor.7.2 BiasNo statement i

19、s made about the bias of either thecharacteristic or residual odor. Some analysts have littleolfactory sensitivity to some materials, while other analystshave extreme sensitivity to either the main or (if any) minorcomponent. In either case, the accuracy of odor measurementsshould be considered susp

20、ect. In case of differing resultsbetween purchaser and supplier, it may be helpful to employ anodor panel consisting of no less than three persons. Consider-ation should be given to the qualifications of the panelists, suchas the following: familiarity with odor determinations, lengthof time exposed

21、 to either the main or suspected minorcomponent, and the environment in which the test is to beconducted.8.
