1、Designation: D 1815 00 (Reapproved 2005)Standard Test Method forWater Absorption (Static) of Vegetable Tanned Leather1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1815; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the y
2、ear of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the d
3、etermination of the amountof water absorbed by leather at 23 6 2C by immersion understatic conditions. It may be used on all types of leather, but isparticularly adapted to vegetable-tanned sole leather. This testmethod does not apply to wet blue.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of
4、thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Terminology3.1 For definitions of leather terms used in this standardrefer to Terminology D 1517.4. Summary of Test Method4.1 In this test method the amount of water absorbed by
6、aleather specimen is measured at room temperature with allsurfaces exposed to water.5. Significance and Use5.1 This test method is currently used to determine compli-ance with specifications for water absorption of impregnatedsole leather. The significance of the test method is limited bythe static
7、conditions employed, and the results do not reflect thewater absorption under the dynamic conditions of flexing. Theresult may be corrected, if required, for any water-solublematerial removed from the leather during the test.6. Apparatus6.1 Immersion Dish, glass or other noncorrosive material, having
8、 a flat bottom at least 3 by 5 in. (76 by 127 mm).6.2 Balance, sensitive to 0.01 g.6.3 Steel Scale or Tape, conforming to the requirements inSection 2 of Test Method D 1516.6.4 Thickness Gage, conforming to the requirements inSection 3 of Test Method D 1813.6.5 Blotting Paper or Filter Paper.6.6 Dry

Test Specimen7.1 The test specimen shall be a rectangle of leatherapproximately 2 by 4 in. (51 by 102 mm).7.2 Unless otherwise specified in t
10、he detail specification, one specimen from each test unit of sample shall be tested.8. Procedure8.1 Determine the length, width, and thickness of thespecimen in accordance with Test Method D 1516 and TestMethod D 1813. Calculate its volume in cubic centimetres.8.2 Weigh the specimen to the nearest 0.
11、01 g and record thismass as W1.8.3 Place the specimen in the immersion dish in a horizontalposition with the grain side up. Support it on glass rods orbeads and weighted with pieces of glass rod to keep itimmersed. Carefully pour distilled water at 23 6 2C into thedish until the specimen is fully im
12、mersed, using at least 10 g ofwater per gram of specimen.8.4 Leave the specimen immersed for a period of 30 min, 2h, or 24 h, as required.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D31 on Leatherand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D31.07 on Physical Properties. 15、.8.5 At the end of the immersion period, remove the speci-men and blot the surface water with filter paper. Weigh thespecimen immediately to the nearest 0.01 g and record thismass as W2.8.6 If a further immersion time is required, reimmerse thespecimen after it has been in the air for a total of 5 m

The total immersion shall beconsidered to exclude these 5-min weighing periods.8.7 If a correction is required for water-soluble materialremoved during the immersion period, proceed as follows: Atthe end of any immersion period stir the water in the immersiondish thor

Take an aliquotof 25 mL of the water from the beaker, put it in weighed tannindish, and dry at 105C. Weigh the tannin dish and residue anddetermine the mass of the residue, Wr. Calculate the tot

Precision11.1 Measurements made on consecutive samples of un-treated sole leather sampled in the standard test area can beexpected to yield a standard deviation of 60.02 g/cm3in theme

A standard deviation of60.04 g/cm3can be expected between measurements fromdifferent hides in a lot sampled in the standard test area.ASTM International takes no position respecting the validity of any patent rights asserted in connection with any item mentionedin this
