1、Designation: D 2064 91 (Reapproved 2003)Standard Test Method forPrint Resistance of Architectural Paints1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2064; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last r

2、evision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers an accelerated procedure forevaluating the print resistance of architectural paints. It differsfrom

3、 print resistance Test Method D 2091 in that the latter isconcerned with lacquer finishes under packaging, shipping, andwarehousing conditions, whereas this test method is concernedwith decorative coatings undergoing random on-site pressurecontact.NOTE 1Printing should not be confused with blocking,

4、 which ismeasured in Test Method D 4946. The former relates to the indentation ofa surface, and the latter, the sticking together of two surfaces.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard. The values given in parentheses are forinformation only.1.3 This standard doe

Summary of Test Method4.1 A piece of cheesecloth is placed on the painted surfaceand topped with a No. 8 rubber stopper (position smallerdiameter of stopper on the cheesecloth) and a 500-g weight to

8、create a pressure of about 0.9 psi (6.2 kPa). This assembly isplaced in a 140F (60C), or other agreed upon temperature, oven for 1 h. When cooled, the resulting paint surfaces arerated on the numerical scale of 0 to 10, which corresponds toa subjective rating of an impression resulting from their bei

Significance and Use5.1 The ability of a coating to resist printing is importantbecause its appearance is adversely affected if the smoothnessof the coating film is altered by contact with another surface, particularly one with a texture. Interior paint systems, p

10、articu-larly gloss and semigloss on window sills and other horizontalsurfaces, often have objects such as flower pots placed on themthat may tend to leave a permanent impression. This tendencyfor a paint film to “print” is a function of the hardness of thecoating, the pressure, temperature, humidity

Apparatus6.1 Conditioning Room, at 65 to 85F (18 to 29.5C) and 40to 60 % relative humidity.6.2 Glass Slides, approximately 3 by 6 in. (75 by 150 mm).6.3 Drawdown Applicator, 3-in. (40 by 40-mm)pieces of cheesecloth, one piece for each slide. Use cheesecloththat is usually

16、supplied with 4 intact layers. Do not separate thelayers.7.3 Place the test slides on a horizontal tray, painted faceupward, then place one piece of cheesecloth over each slideand top with the small diameter face of a No. 8 stopper and a500-g weight, one weight and stopper for each specimen.(Weights

17、 and stoppers should be equilibrated in the oven priorto running the test.) It is recommended that control paints ofknown satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance be used ineach test run and that the tests be run in duplicate.7.4 Place the entire assembly in the oven and remove it afterexactly 1

18、h. Immediately lift off the weights and stopperswithout disturbing the cheesecloth and allow to cool.7.5 After approximately12 h, remove the cheesecloths andcarefully examine the appearance of the films underneath. Notethe depth and amount of cheesecloth pattern left in the paintfilm. If necessary e

Interpretation of Results8.1 Rate print resistance is rated on a numerical scale of 0 to10 corresponding to a subjective rating of the degree to whichthe paint film has been imprinted. Re

Precision10.1 Data are unavailable for a conventional intra- andinterlaboratory precision statement. However, based on actuallaboratory experience, with exp

The employ-ment of common control paints with mutually agreed ratingsshould make it possible for interlaboratory agreement (repro-ducibility) to approach intralaboratory agreement (repeatabil-ity). Although numerical r
