、Designation: D2129 05 (Reapproved 2010)Standard Test Method forColor of Clear ElectricalInsulating Liquids (Platinum-Cobalt Scale)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2129; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of rev

No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Summary of Test Method3.1 The color determined by this test method is derived bycomparing the color of the test specimen with that of a seriesof numbered color reference standards using transmitted lightunder prescribed conditions. The procedure described is ba

、sedon that for measuring the color of water and clear liquidsaccording to the platinum-cobalt scale. This scale is suitablefor measurements over the color range from 5 to 300. The colorof test specimens darker than 300 on the platinum-cobalt scalemust be measured according to the ASTM Color Scale as

、described in Test Method D1500. The use of the platinum-cobalt scale in this way is primarily of value as an expansionof the lower part of the ASTM Color Scale, especially in therange between 0 and 1.4. Significance and Use4.1 Color is significant chiefly as an indicator of contami-nation in electri

、cal insulating liquids. Frequently this contami-nation is the result of solvent action in the apparatus involvedor it may indicate possible contamination. No definite relation-ship can be established between color and the physical andelectrical characteristics of the liquid; for that reason color in

、itself has limited value as a measure of condition. For moreprecise determination of color, Test Method D1209 may beused.5. Thissolution has a color of 500.NOTE 1The color standard stock solution (platinum-cobalt solution)can be purchased with a color of 500 from laboratory supply firms.7.2 Platinum-Cobalt Standards5The unit

、of color is thatcolor produced by 1 mg of platinum per litre. From the stocksolution, prepare color standards, as given in Table 1,bydiluting the required volumes to 50 mL with water in theNessler tubes. Cap the tubes and seal the caps with shellac ora waterproof cement.8. Procedure8.1 Introduce 50

、mL of the test specimen into a Nesslertube, passing the sample through a filter if it has any visible testspecimen turbidity. Cap the tube, place in the comparator, andcompare with the standards.8.2 If the recorded color of the test specimen is greater than300, do not use the platinum-cobalt scale.

、Use Test MethodD1500 to measure color.9. Report9.1 Report which method was used, Test Method D2129 orTest Method D1500.9.2 Report as the color, the number of the standard that mostnearly matches the test specimen. In the event that the colorlies midway between two standards, report the darker of the

Precision and Bias10.1 An estimate of the repeatability has been developedba

、sed on data supplied by a single laboratory. These data arepresented in Appendix X1. These results suggest that anestimate of the 95 % repeatability limit for color by TestMethod D2129 is 15.1 % of the test result or approximately 4.5when the mean color level is 30.10.2 It is not possible to specify

、 the reproducibility of theprocedure in Test Method D2129 for measuring color of cleardielectric liquids because there is an insufficient number oflaboratories available to participate in an interlaboratory roundrobin program required to produce the necessary data.10.3 No information can be presente
