Scope1.1 This test metho

3、d covers the evaluation of the corrosive-ness to metals by halogenated organic solvents and theiradmixtures for cold cleaning applications.NOTE 1The test method described herein is an adaptation of TestMethod D 130.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, asso

Summary of Test Method3.1 Polished metal strips are immersed in a given quantityof sample and heated at reflux tempe

6、rature for 60 min. At theend of this period, the metal strips are removed and examinedfor evidence of corrosion. Similar metal strips are immersed ina given quantity of sample in closed containers and held atroom temperature for 10 days. At the end of this period, thestrips are removed and examined.

7、4. Significance and Use4.1 These tests are to be used as a guide in selecting oreliminating certain solvents or grades of solvents used forcleaning or degreasing metal parts.5. Apparatus5.1 FlaskErlenmeyer flask, borosilicate glass, 125-mLcapacity, with a 24/40 standard-taper joint.5.2 Reflux Conden

8、serCondenser with a 24/40 standard-taper joint, 650 mm in length.5.3 BathOil or water bath, for maintaining a temperatureslightly higher than the initial boiling point of the sample. Asupport shall be provided to hold the flask upright.5.4 ThermometerAn ASTM High Distillation Thermom-eter having a r

9、ange from 30 to 760F and conforming to therequirements forThermometer 8F or a range from 2 to 400Cconforming to the requirements for Thermometer 8C as pre-scribed in Specification E1or other thermometer of suitabledesign and range.5.5 Test Tubes, 150 mm in length, 19 mm in diameter, withstandard-tap

10、er, ground-glass stopped.6. Materials6.1 Metal StripsStrips of various metals about12 in. (12mm) in width and about 3 in. (76 mm) in length. A suggestedselection of metals includes copper, brass, aluminum, steel, andgalvanized iron. Other metals likely to be encountered mayalso be used for this test

11、.6.2 Polishing MaterialsSilicon carbide or alumina-gritpaper of varying degrees of fineness including 240-grit siliconcarbide paper or cloth; also a supply of 150-mesh siliconcarbide grain and pharmaceutical-grade absorbent cotton.6.3 Cleaning SolventNoncorrosive mineral spirits, suchas Specificatio

12、n D 235 on hydrocarbon dry cleaning solvent.7. Finish with 240-grit silicon carbidepaper, removing all marks that may have been made by othergrades of paper used previously. Immerse the strip in noncor-rosive mineral spirits, from which it may be withdr

16、awnimmediately for final polishing, or in which it may be storedfor future use.7.2 Final PolishingRemove a strip from the noncorrosivemineral spirits. Handle only with stainless steel forceps; do nottouch with the fingers. Polish the main surfaces with siliconcarbide grains on absorbent cotton. Rub

17、in the direction of thelong axis of the strip, carrying the stroke beyond the end of thestrip before reversing the direction. Clean all metal dust fromthe strip by rubbing vigorously with clean pads of absorbentcotton until a fresh pad remains unsoiled. When the strip isclean, immediately immerse it

18、 in the prepared sample.8. Procedure8.1 Place the polished metal strip in a clean Erlenmeyerflask. Add sufficient sample to be tested to cover the stripcompletely.Add boiling beads, insert the reflux condenser, andheat the contents of the flask rapidly to boiling by immersingthe flask in an oil or w

19、ater bath at a temperature just highenough to cause gentle boiling. Keep the sample refluxing for60 min.8.2 Examination of StripImmediately withdraw the stripwith stainless steel forceps; blot dry with quantitative filterpaper; inspect for evidences of tarnish or corrosion by com-parison with a simi

20、larly polished but untested strip.8.3 Place a polished metal strip in a clean test tube. Addsufficient sample to cover the strip completely. Stopper the tubeand allow to stand at room temperature for 10 days.8.4 Examination of StripAt the end of the 10-day period,withdraw the strip with stainless st

21、eel forceps; blot dry withquantitative filter paper, and inspect for evidences of tarnish orcorrosion by comparison with a similarly polished but untestedstrip.9. Report9.1 When only one metal is to be in contact with the solvent,compare the effect of various solvents on the metal, and list thesolve

22、nts in order of merit, or as acceptable and not acceptable,according to the requirements of the purchasing specification.9.2 When a number of different metals are to be in contactwith the solvent, prepare a separate list or grouping for eachmetal involved, and add a statement to the effect that one

23、ormore solvents are or are not acceptable for all the metalsinvolved.10. Precision and Bias10.1 Only visual observations required. It is not possible todetermine a precision and bias statement.11.
