Scope1.1 This specification covers pigments that consist s

3、ubstan-tially of natural hydrous magnesium silicate, and is restricted tothose minerals that conform to the chemical limits prescribedherein and can be suitably processed to what is commerciallyknown as paint pigment quality.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The va

Composition and Properties3.1 The pigment shall be made by grinding or otherwiseprocessing natural, hydrous magnesium silicate and shallconform to the following requirements:Weight %min maxCombined magnesium and calcium sili-cates (MgO p

9、lesThe pigment shall contain no morethan 2 % of coarse particles, retained on a 45-m (No. 325)sieve except as may be agreed upon between the purchaser andthe seller.3.4 Water-Soluble MatterThe pigment shall contain nomore than 1 % water-soluble matter except as may be agreedupon between the purchase

10、r and the seller.3.5 Oil AbsorptionThe oil absorption shall be equal,within agreed upon tolerances, to that of a reference sampleagreed upon between the purchaser and the seller.3.6 ConsistencyWhen consistency is included in the pur-chasers specification, it shall be equal, within agreed upontoleran

11、ces, to that of a reference sample agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the seller.3.7 FinenessThe paint fineness shall be equal, withinagreed upon tolerances, to that of a reference sample agreedupon between the purchaser and the seller.4. Sampling4.1 Two samples shall be taken at random from diffe

12、rentpackages from each lot, batch, days pack, or other unit ofproduction in a shipment. At the option of thepurchaser, the samples may be tested separately or afterblending in equal quantities, the samples from the sameproduction unit form a

16、composite sample.5. Test Methods5.1 Tests shall be conducted in accordance with the follow-ing ASTM test methods, where applicable. Test procedures notcovered by ASTM test methods shall be mutually agreed uponbetween the purchaser and the seller.5.1.1 Color, Composition, and Coarse ParticlesTestMeth

17、ods D 717.5.1.2 Water-Soluble Matter and Loss on IgnitionTestMethods D 1208.5.1.3 Oil AbsorptionTest Method D 281.5.1.4 ConsistencyUse the pigment to prepare a mixtureaccording to the following directions: Weigh 78 g of petroleumspirits and 80 g of linseed oil (viscosity, 21 to 24 P; acidnumber, 4 t

18、o 8) into a pint can and thoroughly mix with aspatula. Weigh in 160 g of magnesium silicate and stir with aspatula to wet all lumps. Stir with a motor-driven propeller-type stirrer for 5 min at approximately 800 r/min. Weigh in anadditional 180 g of linseed oil and stir an additional 2 min withthe e

19、lectric stirrer. Determine the consistency in accordancewith Test Method D 562.5.1.5 FinenessTest Method D 1210.
