A number in parenth

2、eses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscriptepsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers four grades of red pigmentcommercially known as red lead. The pigment may be pur-chased in the dry form or as a paste in oil.1

3、.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2. Composition and Properties3.1 Dry PigmentThe pigment shall be made by roastinglitharge or metallic lead, or compounds of lead that yieldlitharge by heating, and shall consist entirel

5、y of oxides of lead,free of adulterants. The four grades of pigment shall conformto the following requirements:True red lead (Pb3O4), min, %:85 % grade 8595 % grade 9597 % grade 9798 % grade 98Total impurities including moisture, water solublematter, and matter insoluble in a mixture ofnitric acid a

6、nd hydrogen peroxide, max, %1.0Lead monoxide, PbO remainderCoarse particles (total residue retained on a 45-m(No. 325) sieve), max, %1.0When mixed as indicated in the following table, the resultingpaint, brushed on a smooth vertical iron surface, shall dry hardand elastic without running, streaking,

7、 or sagging:Dry red lead 20 lb (9.1 kg)Raw linseed oil 5 pt (2.4 L)Turpentine 2 gills (0.24 L)Liquid drier 2 gills (0.24 L)3.2 Paste in OilThe paste shall be made by thoroughlygrinding the specified pigment with linseed oil (Note 1). Thepaste as shipped by the seller, and for three months thereafter

8、,shall not be caked in the container, and shall break up readilyin oil to form a smooth paint of brushing consistency. The pasteshall conform to the following requirements:Pigment, % 92 to 94Linseed oil, % 6.0 to 8.0Moisture and other volatile matter, max, % 0.5Coarse particles and skins (total resi

9、due retained ona No. 325 (45-m) sieve), max, % of the dry pigment1.5When mixed as indicated in the following table, the resultingpaint, brushed on a smooth, vertical iron surface, shall dry hardand elastic without running, streaking, or sagging:Red lead paste 20 lb (9.1 kg)Raw linseed oil 3 pt (1.4

10、L)Turpentine 2 gills (0.24 L)Liquid drier 2 gills (0.24 L)NOTE 1The storage of paste red lead in places of high temperatureshould be avoided, as heat accelerates the tendency of this material to cakeor harden. Purchasers are cautioned that 85 % grade red lead should not bebought in paste form. The 9

11、5 % grade, if made into paste, should be usedwithin a short period of time after grinding. When pure red lead paste isto be stored for a considerable period of time, the 97 % or 98 % grade ofred lead should be specified. Therefore the manufacturer shall identify thegrade of red lead used in the past

12、e and the date of manufacture.4. Sampling4.1 Two samples shall be taken at random from differentpackages from each lot, batch, days pack, or other unit ofproduction in a shipment. When no markings distinguishingbetween units of production appear, samples shall be takenfrom different packages in the

13、ratio of two samples for each10 000 lb (5000 kg), except that for shipments of less than10 000 lb two samples shall be taken. At the option of thepurchaser, the samples may be tested separately or afterblending in equal quantities the samples from the productionunit to form a composite sample.5. Tes
