、Designation: D 3805/D 3805M 97 (Reapproved 2009)Standard Guide forApplication of Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3805/D 3805M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of rev

、ision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This guide covers the application methods for Specifi-cation D 2824 Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof

、 Coatings,Non-Fibered (Type I), Asbestos Fibered (Type II), and Fiberedwithout Asbestos (Type III), for application on asphalt built-uproof membranes, modified bitumen roof membranes, bitumi-nous base flashings, concrete surfaces, metal surfaces, emul-sion coatings, and solvent-based coatings. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore,

、eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Significance and Use3.1 Asphalt-based, solvent-type, fibered or nonfibered,aluminum-pigmented roof coatings are used as a protectivecoating for solar reflection to prolong the life of roofingmaterials or where decorative qualities are desired.3.2 Suitable applic

Water can react withaluminum pigment producing hydrogen gas, a potential explo-sion hazard.)5. Equipment for Application of Coa

Mixing of Coating6.1 The aluminum pigment and filler settle out duringstorag

、e. Thorough mixing of coating is necessary to redispersethese components prior to use. Mechanically mix the coatinguntil homogeneous. Periodic mixing of the coating duringapplication may be needed. Coating should not be thinned orheated.7. Weather Considerations7.1 Coating applications should not pr

、oceed during periodsof inclement weather. Do not begin application when precipi-tation is anticipated within 24 h after application.7.2 Apply materials when ambient temperatures are 10C50F and warmer, but not in excess of 40C 104F.8. Surface Considerations8.1 Coatings should be applied to sound surf

、aces that aredry and clean to promote adhesion. Debris, dirt, grease, oil, andother materials that could impede coating adhesion shall beremoved. It is recommended that coatings be applied as soon aspractical after surface preparation.8.2 Priming is not normally required and should only beused if re

、commended by the coating or membrane manufac-turer. Priming is not to be considered a substitute for properpreparation or cleaning of the surface.8.3 When the coatings are installed on slopes less than 1 %18 in./ft, performance problems can occur. Standing watermay dull the aluminums luster and may

、cause adhesion failurebetween the coating and substrate.8.4 Application on steep slopes, may result in some runningof the coating. Consideration should be given to installing thedesired coating coverage in multiple coats at lower applicationrates for the individual coats on steep-slope surfaces.8.5

、When coatings are to be applied over a bituminoussurface, solvent-based coating or metal, it is recommended thatthe surface be allowed to weather prior to the application of thecoating. The extent of weathering depends on the local ambientweather conditions and the type of surface to be coated.Suffi

、cient weathering should occur so that asphalt or coatedsurfaces achieve a relative set and are not prone to excessivesoftening or flowing. Applications to newly coated surfacesmay result in bleed-through, stress cracking, or possiblyalligatoring. The length of time necessary for a surface toweather

、before application of the coating shall be agreed uponby the parties involved (for example, building owner, consult-ant, contractor, manufacturer). The length of time for weath-ering shall be stated in design specifications that reference thisapplication guide.8.6 The previous versions of this guide

、 required that thesurface have at least the equivalent of one complete summer ofweathering. This guide, although conservative, was generallyfound to be sufficient to avoid cracks and splits in thealuminum roof coating due to substrate movement. In theabsence of any field history, this guide can be f

、ollowed withreasonable assurance of success.9. Surface Preparation9.1 GeneralDebris, dust accumulations, and other loosematerials should be removed using brooms, air blowers, orvacuum equipment. Heavily soiled areas may be washed usingtrisodium phosphate with water and scrubbed with a broom orpower

、washed. Rinse thoroughly with plenty of fresh water toremove cleaning solutions. Allow water to evaporate prior tostart of application of coating. Remove materials that couldimpede coating adhesion.9.2 Concrete SurfacesThe concrete must be cured and dryprior to application. Test Method D 4263 is an

、example of atest that can be conducted to assess moisture contained in theconcrete.9.3 Metal SurfacesClean areas of rust and prime thecleaned area with a suitable primer. Exposed fasteners must besecurely tightened or replaced.9.4 Modified-Bitumen MembranesRefer to Asphalt Roof-ing Manufacturers Ass

Coating Application Methods10.1 Consult the coating manufacturer and membrane/substrate manufacturer for specif

、ic guidelines regarding appli-cation methods, equipment, rate of application, and so forth.Unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer(s), followthese procedures:10.2 For the lower viscosity nonfibered coating (Type I), therate of application can be in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 L/m212 to1 gal/100

、 ft2.10.3 For the higher viscosity fibered coatings (Type II orType III), the rate of application for asphalt membranes can be0.4 to 1.4 L/m21 to 312 gal/100 ft2. The rate of applicationfor metal surfaces should be 0.2 to 0.4 L/m212 to 1 gal/100ft2.10.4 Multiple coat applications may be used to achi

、evemore even coverage and to improve the aesthetic appearance. The rate of application should be maintained for each indi-vidual coat in a multi-coat application. Curing time betweencoats shall be such that in-place coating is not damaged by thefoot traffic necessary to apply the next coat.10.5 For b

、rush and roller applications, for aesthetic consid-erations only, finish strokes should be made in relatively thesame direction taking into consideration directional changesaround penetrations, protrusions, and along perimeters. Whenmultiple coat applications are used, successive applications canbe

、applied perpendicular to the previous coat to achieve moreeven coverage and to improve aesthetic appearance.11. Curing Time and Foot Traffic11.1 Curing time is dependent on ambient weather condi-tions during the curing cycle. Under warm, sunny conditions, the coating may dry to the touch in 2 to 4 h.

、11.2 Avoid walking on the coating until it can take traffic sothat it is not damaged.12.
