1、Designation: D4707 09 (Reapproved 2013)Standard Test Method forMeasuring Paint Spatter Resistance During RollerApplication1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4707; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, t

2、he year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the ten-dency of a paint to spatter when applied with a paint

5、ary of Test Method3.1 The test paint is applied to a black plastic panel bydraw-down. The coated plastic panel is immediately mountedon an essentially vertical surface above a sheet of paper used tocatch any spatter. A specially designed notched spool roller(see 5.1) is rolled through the film follo

6、wing a definedprocedure, tending to generate spatter. Any spatter falls uponthe spatter catch paper and, after drying, is rated against thepictorial standards.4. Significance and Use4.1 Paint spatter generated by roller application is depen-dent on the properties of both the paint being applied and

7、thepaint roller cover used for the application. To eliminate theinfluence of the paint roller cover as a variable, and thus restrictthe spatter-inducing variable to the paint under test only, thepaint roller cover is replaced by a standard notched spool rollerto generate spatter by a mechanism that

8、simulates that of apaint-applying roller cover.4.2 Although most of the development work to establish thistest method was undertaken using latex paints, sufficient workwas also done to show its applicability to solvent-reduciblepaints.4.3 Tests during the development of this test methodshowed that t

9、he spattering properties of paints, like otherphysical properties, may in time change. Therefore, the resultsof this test are valid only for the time when the test is run.5. Procedure8.1 Clean the top of the glass plate and both sides of theblack plastic panel to ensure that they are free of specks. Placethe black plastic panel on the glass plate and tape the narrow

It is desirable that the surfaceunder the black plastic panel be firm but with a little resilience.A backing of 6-mm (14-in.) thick fiberboard

23、is ideal as veryhard surfaces make proper performance of the test difficult.Center the spatter catch paper on the laboratory bench or tableunder the black plastic panel with the short side of the catchpaper closest to the black plastic panel.8.4 Using the clean, notched spool roller, start in one of

Precision and Bias10.1 In an interlaboratory study of this test method in whichone operator in each of three laboratories tested six paints witha broad range in spattering properties, one operator in twoother laboratories tested three of the paints and one opera

35、tor inone laboratory tested only two paints, the between-laboratoriesstandard deviation was found to be 0.17 rating units (see Note2) with 18 df, with no results discarded. Based on this standarddeviation, the following criteria should be used for judging theacceptability of results at the 95 % conf

36、idence level:10.1.1 RepeatabilityIntralaboratory precision is normallybetter than interlaboratory precision. However, when rating isinvolved, it is difficult to establish reliability because of thenatural tendency for bias when operators know the samematerial is being tested again.NOTE 2When the res

This might not occur if some paints with lessdistinct differences in spattering properties were included in a similarstudy.10.1.2 ReproducibilityTwo results obtained by operatorsin different laboratories should be considered suspect
