General Requirements3.1 The hot-applied crack filler shall be a compound tha
7、twill effectively fill cracks in both asphalt concrete and portlandcement concrete pavements. The crack filler shall resist soft-ening and pickup by vehicle tires at ambient summer tempera-tures when used in an appropriate manner. The material shallbe capable of being heated to the specified safe he
8、atingtemperature (see 4.1) in appropriate melting units, shall becapable of being effectively applied to pavement cracksthrough pressure fed melter-applicator equipment, and shall besuitable for filling cracks that are a minimum of 9.5 mm 38 in.in width (see Appendix X1).4. Physical Requirements4.1
9、Safe Heating TemperatureThe safe heating tempera-ture is the highest temperature to which the crack filler can beheated and still conform to all requirements of this specifica-tion. The safe heating temperature shall be a minimum of 11C20F higher than the manufacturers minimum recommendedapplication
10、 temperature. For testing purposes, the pouringtemperature for specimen preparation shall be the safe heatingtemperature recommended by the manufacturer. The safeheating temperature shall be shown on all containers and shallbe provided to the testing agency before any laboratory testsare begun.4.2 S
11、oftening Point The softening point of the crack fillershall be a minimum of 65.5C 150F.4.3 Cone Penetration, Non-ImmersedAt 25 6 0.1C 776 0.2F, 150 g, for 5 s, shall not exceed 70 units.4.4 Cone Penetration at 4C 39.2FAt 4 6 0.1C 39.26 0.2F, 200 g, for 60 s, shall be a minimum of 15 units.4.5 Resili

17、rily with the operation of theworks.5.2 Samples shall consist of one of the manufacturersoriginal sealed containers selected at random from the lot orbatch of finished material. A batch or lot shall be considered asall finished material that was manufactured simultaneously orcontinuously as a unit b
18、etween the time of compounding andthe time of packaging or placing in shipping containers.5.3 The crack filler portion for testing shall be obtainedfrom the selected manufacturers original container in accor-dance with Practice D5167. The sample portion for testingwhich is added to and heated in the
19、 melter shall weigh 800 650 g 28 6 2 oz.6. Heating6.1 Heat the material in accordance with Practice D5167.6.1.1 The oil bath in the melter shall be heated to atemperature between the sealant safe heating temperature and41.7C 75F above the sealant safe heating temperature, andin no case shall be more
20、 than 288C 550F. Add the sealantsample to the melter according to instructions in PracticeD5167. After the sample has been added to the melter, the oilbath temperature shall be regulated within the above listedtemperature limits to raise the sealant temperature to themanufacturers recommended safe h
21、eating temperature withinthe required 1 h time as stated in Practice D5167. The sampleshall then be maintained at the safe heating temperature whilebeing continuously stirred until a total of 90 min from the timethe first segment was added to the melter has elapsed. Speci-mens for physical testing a
22、re then poured from the heatedmaterial.6.1.2 Required specimens for cone penetration and resil-ience testing shall be poured into appropriate sample containersuntil slightly overfilled, and then immediately leveled to flushwith the top of the sample container using a straightedge. Threespecimens in
23、177-mL 6 ounce sample containers shall bepoured. Two are for cone penetration testing and one forresilience testing.7. Test Methods7.1 Specimen Curing All specimens shall be cured atstandard laboratory atmospheric conditions specified in TestMethods D5329 for 24 6 2 h prior to beginning any testing.

27、tainers shall individually not weigh more than27 kg 60 lbs and shall be constructed to facilitate easyremoval of the crack filler. Any surface covering or non-adherent film which is used in packing shall melt into thematerial when heated and shall not result in application or fieldperformance diffic

29、own materials conforming tothis specification may be damaged by heating at too high atemperature, or by heating for too long a time. Care should beexercised to secure equipment for heating and application thatis suitable for the purpose. The material should be heated in akettle or melter, constructe
30、d as a double boiler, with the spacebetween the inner and outer shells filled with oil or other heattransfer medium. Positive temperature control, mechanicalagitation, and recirculation pumps should be provided. Othermethods of indirect heating satisfactory to the engineer may beused. The crack fill
31、er should be heated to a temperature that isat least the manufacturers minimum recommended applicationtemperature. Temperature should not exceed the material safeheating temperature.X1.2 Pavement cracks to be filled with material covered bythis specification should be dry and clean of all dirt, dust
32、, orother contaminants so that adhesion to the crack surfaces isdeveloped. Cleaning methods used shall be as required forspecific job conditions.
