Scope1.1 This practice establishes the procedure for melting orheating, or both, of hot-applied joint and crack sealants andf

3、illers in preparation for the making of test specimens used inthe laboratory evaluations of the sealants and fillers. Refer tothe specific standard material specification for sampling re-quirements, test sample quantity, temperatures and times formelting and heating, and the number of specimens requ

4、ired fortesting.1.2 This practice is applicable to the hot-applied joint andcrack sealants and fillers used in both portland cement andasphaltic-concrete pavements.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system m

5、ay not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.4 WARNING Mercury has been designated by EPA andmany state agencies as a hazardous material that can causecentral nervous

6、 system, kidney and liver damage. Mercury, orits vapor, may be hazardous to health and corrosive tomaterials. Caution should be taken when handling mercury andmercury containing products. Terminology3.1 DefinitionsRefer to Terminology D5535 for d

Significance and Use4.1 It is intended that this practice be used by manufactur-ers, users, and testing agencies. The use of this practiceestablishes a uniform procedure fo

11、r the melting or heating ofhot-applied sealants and fillers. It is not intended to establishtest procedures or conditions of test which are associated witheach of the joint sealants and fillers.5. Standard Conditions5.1 The laboratory atmospheric conditions, hereinafter re-ferred to as standard cond

12、itions, shall be as detailed inSpecification E171,236 2C (73.4 6 3.6F) and 50 % relativehumidity 65 %. The material shall be conditioned for 24 h atstandard conditions before melting or heating.6. Apparatus6.1 Laboratory Melter:6.1.1 The equipment for melting of the joint sealant or fillershall be a

13、n oil jacketed melter equipped with a mechanicalagitator for the oil bath and material in the melting vat.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04 on Road andPaving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D04.33 onFormed In-Place Sealants for Joints and Crack

16、19428-2959, United States.6.1.2 The heat transfer oil shall be a high flash point oil, thatis, in excess of 315C (600F).6.1.3 The heat source shall be thermostatically controlledand capable of maintaining the heat transfer oil temperaturewithin a tolerance of 63C (65F) and capable of heating theoil

17、to a maximum of 288C (550F).6.1.4 The mechanical agitator speed for the material shall be30 6 5 rpm when fully loaded and the agitator speed for the oilbath shall be such to allow continuous circulation of the oil.6.1.5 Except when adding the sealant or filler sample, orchecking temperature, the mel

18、ters pots shall be covered withclose fitting lids.6.1.6 Refer to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 (bottom discharge type) andFig. 3 (removable can type) for typical laboratory melters.Alsosee Note 1.6.1.7 The thermometric device shall be a Type K thermo-couple with resolution of 1C and the calibration verified ina

19、ccordance with Test Method E220 at least once per year. The reference thermometer shall be NISTcertified or NISTtraceable.NOTE 1The removable can type melter as shown in Fig. 3 is verysimilar in design to the mel

21、ter shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. Fig. 3s pots aredesigned to be removed so the melted material can be poured. Extra caremust be taken when using this type of melter. Check the manufacturersrecommended safety procedures before use.7. Precautions7.1 Prior to beginning sampling and heating of sealants o

22、rfillers, a Material Safety Data Sheet must be obtained from thesealant or filler manufacturer so that proper safe handlingtechniques will be used.7.2 Maximum Heating TemperatureIt is imperative thatthe manufacturers maximum heating temperatures be obtainedfor the material to be evaluated. The tempe

23、rature of thematerial must not exceed the maximum heating temperature.7.3 The laboratory melter unit should be located under anexhaust hood to disperse fumes.7.4 Joint/crack sealants and fillers are manufactured from avariety of materials. To avoid compatibility problems, clean themelter so that it

24、is free of all cleaning solvents and previouslymelted material.8. Procedure8.1 Sample Preparation:8.1.1 Obtain the sample which is delivered to the laboratoryfor testing in accordance with its respective standard materialspecification.8.1.2 Solid MaterialsFor sealants or fillers which aresolid at 23

25、 6 2C (73.4 6 3.6F), cut a complete verticalsection from the material block as illustrated in Fig. 4, in orderto obtain a uniform representative sample and supply enoughproduct to pour all specimens. Also, if present, removecontainer liner by cutting it away. Consult the respectivematerial specifica

26、tion for the required sample size and methodof cutting. Cut the entire vertical section into segments ofapproximately 50 g and place all segments from one verticalsection in the same pot and melt.8.1.3 Liquid MaterialsFor sealants which are liquid at 236 2C (73.4 6 3.6F), stir the sealant to be samp

Consultthe respective material specification for the required samplesize.8.2 Heating Procedure:8.2.1 Hea

28、t the oil bath to a temperature that will bring thematerial to the specified temperature within one hour. 8 to 15C(14 27F) above the maximum heating temperature of thematerial to be tested has been found to work satisfactorily forthe oil bath temperature (see 4.1 and 6.1.7) (refer to therespective m

29、aterial specification for the maximum oil bathtemperature).8.2.2 Sample AdditionThe sample pot in the melting unitshall be clean and free of any residue from previous heatedsealants or fillers as well as cleaning materials.8.2.2.1 Solid MaterialsAdd four 50 6 10 g portions of thesealant or filler in

30、to the melting units pot and, with the agitatorrunning, bring the material to a pouring consistency not toexceed the manufacturers maximum heating temperature.Addthe remaining segments at the rate of one 50 g segment/min,stopping the agitator (for not more than 10 s) while making theaddition. If the

31、 sample size required by the respective materialspecification is too large to be melted in one pot, additionalvertical samples must be obtained and melted to meet thecorrect sample size. All of the 50 g segments from one verticalsection must be placed in the same pot and melted as part of thetest. K

34、 Liquid MaterialsImmediately after stirring, addthe entire sample portion at one time. If the sample sizerequired by the respective material specification is too large tobe melted in one pot, an additional pot shall be used. Beginmechanical stirring immediately after the sealant is added tothe pot(s

35、).8.2.3 After the solid segments or liquid is added to themelter, regulate the oil bath temperature to bring the sample tothe temperature specified in the respective material specifica-tion within one h from the time the first portion of the materialwas added to the melter. Then, if required, contin

36、ue heating forthe time and at the temperature required in the respectivematerial specification.8.2.4 Temperature Monitoring:8.2.4.1 When material is to be poured immediately uponreaching the specified temperature, check its temperature atmaximum 15 min intervals using a Type K thermocouple withthe c

37、alibration verifed in accordance with 6.1.7 to ensureconformance with specified temperature requirements. Stop themechanical stirrer when measuring temperatures. If materialtemperatures exceed the maximum heating temperature or dropbelow the minimum application temperature after the pouringtemperatu

38、re has been reached, discard the sample and redo theheating. Maintain appropriate records of times and tempera-tures to verify conformance with specification requirements.8.2.4.2 When prolonged heating is required (see Note 2), thesample temperature shall be monitored at intervals not toexceed 30 mi

39、n to verify conformance to temperature require-ments. If material temperatures exceed the maximum heatingtemperature or drop below the minimum application tempera-ture after the pouring temperature has been reached, discard thesample and redo the heating. Maintain appropriate records oftimes and tem

40、peratures to verify conformance with specifica-tion requirements.NOTE 2Sometimes prolonged heating is required to verify that thematerial can meet all the requirements of the specification when prolongedheating situations happen in the field.9. Sample Pouring9.1 When using a melter with a bottom dis

41、charge, discardapproximately the first 50 g of material and then pour all testspecimens as required directly from the melter within a periodof 10 min while continuing agitation.9.2 When using a melter with a removable sample pot, stopthe mechanical stirring device and then remove within onemin. Imme

42、diately remove the sample pot from the melter andclean the oil residue from the outer pot surface.
