、 over a stated range ofstrain rates. (Compare Newtonian behavior.)3.1.6 thixotropy, nin a liquid, the property of thinningwhen subjected to strains greater than the yield strain and ofrethickening with time upon subsequent rest.3.1.6.1 DiscussionThe liquid must exhibit yield to bethixotropic. If the
、 liquid is deformed more than the yield strain, the underlying elastic network is disrupted and its viscosity isreduced. The network reestablishes itself in time when at rest.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 breakaway torque, nthe initial torque required tobreak the bond, meas
、ured at the first movement between thenut and the bolt, when unscrewing an unseated assembly.3.2.2 prevailing torque, nthe torque measured at 180rotation of the nut.3.2.2.1 DiscussionPrevailing torque was originally de-fined in MIL-S-46163 and MIL-S-22473 as the average of thefour torques measured a
、t 90, 180, 270, and 360 rotation of thenut. Studies have shown that the torque measured static at 180rotation of the nut is statistically equivalent to the average ofthe torque measured at the four14 turns. Since measuring thetorque at the one angle of rotation is more efficient, prevailingtorque is
、 most often defined as the torque measured static at180 rotation of the nut. However, for purposes of thisspecification, the definition of prevailing torque as the averageof the four torques measured at 90, 180, 270, and 360 rotationof the nut is also acceptable.4.
