3、he compat-ibility of coatings with inhibitors used to prevent flash rustingof steel before application of coatings.1.2 The inhibitors are used with water-blast cleaning surfacepreparation and may be used with or without abrasives.1.3 The manufacturer of the coatings shall be consulted toensure compa

Significance and

9、Use3.1 Water-blast cleaning with, (SSPC-TR2/NACE 6C 198)or without, (SSPC-SP 12/NACE No. 5) abrasive, results inflash rusting under some environmental conditions. Inhibitorsare used to prevent flash rusting while drying and beforecoating application. The inhibitor or reaction products of theinhibito

10、r on the substrate becomes part of the coating systems.Coating performance may be influenced by the inhibitor.Soluble contaminants or unreacted inhibitors left on the surfaceunder the coating may cause premature failure. This practiceincludes a comparison of coating performance with and with-out inh

11、ibitors using various laboratory tests to simulate a rangeof conditions such as high moisture, marine atmospheric orwater immersion.3.2 The user or specifier must determine the specific testmethods to be used and exposure conditions. Some testmethods referenced may not be applicable to all types ofc

12、oatings.4. Specimen Preparation4.1 Carbon steel samples of an appropriate size, in accor-dance with Specification A 36/A 36M for the specified testmethod shall be white metal blast-cleaned in accordance withSSPC-SP 5 and measure profile in accordance with TestMethods D 4417. 18、l be treated with the inhibitor by immers-ing the dry abrasive-blasted panel in a water solution, at 75 610F (24 6 5.5C), of the inhibitor at the concentrationrecommended by the inhibitor manufacturer and at five timesthis concentration (five times to simulate excessive concentra-tion above that rec

19、ommended by the inhibitor manufacturer).Use deionized water in accordance with Specification D 1193.Deionized water, Type II Reagent Grade, is used to minimizetest variables. Tap water is typically used in the field and maycontain varying amounts of salts.4.3 Remove panel after 1 or 2 min immersion

20、in theinhibitor solution and hang in a vertical position allowing theinhibited water solution to drain and dry at 75 6 10F (24 65.5C). If required by the inhibitor manufacturer, rinse panelswith deionized water to remove excess inhibitor or in accor-dance with the manufacturers recommendations (see

21、alsoSpecification D 1193). Care should be taken not to allow thewater/inhibitor solutions to puddle since this may cause a highconcentration of inhibitor, after evaporation.4.4 After completely drying and prior to any appearance offlash rusting, apply the first coat of the coating system. Applycoati

22、ng within 6 to8htoonesetofcontrol and exposure testspecimens and apply coating to another set of control andexposure test specimens within 48 to 56 h. Select shorter timeswhen inhibitor shows flash rusting before either of these timeperiods.4.5 Record relative humidity range and drying time aftertre

23、atment and before coating. Apply remaining coats as rec-ommended by the coating manufacturer.5. Procedure5.1 Select as a minimum, one of the tests that best simulatesthe intended service condition of the coating system (see Table1): Specification B117, Practice D 2247, and NACE TM-01-74 Method B. Ot

24、her tests on weathering, such as PracticeD 822, or cyclic testing, elevated temperatures, chemicalimmersion, radiation or design basic accident (DBA) may alsobe used to examine inhibitors with a coating for specificexposure conditions.5.2 Use a different time schedule for comparison testingdepending

25、 on the generic coating being tested with the inhibi-tor. Schedule more frequent examination schedules in order tomore accurately identify time when changes in coating condi-tions occur.5.3 Conduct two adhesion tests in accordance with TestMethods D 4541 or D 3359, Test Method B, elcometer or tapete

26、st procedures at each time period on both the control andexposure test samples.5Repair adhesion test areas beforecontinuing the test.6. Report6.1 Report blistering and scribe corrosion as appropriate forthe test method and report conditions of test samples inaccordance with Test Methods D 714 and D

27、1654 at each testtime. Report adhesion test values and where failure occurredfor each test condition and time. Report sample preparationconditions including:6.1.1 Abrasive blast profile in accordance with Test Meth-ods D 4417,6.1.2 Dry film thickness of each coat,6.1.3 Inhibitor used and concentrati

28、on,6.1.4 Time between inhibitor treatment to coating applica-tion and relative humidity range, and6.1.5 Coating, thinner and application method used.7.
