、Designation: D5570/D5570M 10Standard Test Method forWater Resistance of Tape and Adhesives Used as BoxClosure1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5570/D5570M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the yea

、r of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers a procedure to determine thewater resistance of an adhesive or tape as measured by theamo

、unt of tape or adhesive dissolved or dispersed in water.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues

、 from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the

Summary of Test Method4.1 Procedure AThe water resistance of a tape (gummedor pressure sensitive) is measured by immersing the tape inwater at least 24 h at 73.4 6 4F 23 6 2C and determiningthe percent of tape that is dissolved or dispersed.4.2 Proce

、dure BThe water resistance of an adhesive ismeasured by coating the adhesive on a paper surface, immers-ing in water at least 24 h at 73.4 6 4F 23 6 2C, anddetermining the percent of adhesive that is dissolved ordispersed.5. Significance and Use5.1 When a box becomes wet, the performance of the boxa

、nd its closure are reduced. It is desirable to have box closuremethods that retain an ability to keep the box closed when wet.Sealing or reinforcing methods sometimes are useful to im-prove performance of wet boxes and closures. Water resistanceis sometimes a regulatory or contractual requirement.5.

、2 A test result indicating that a box closure tape oradhesive is soluble or dispersible in water is an indication thatits function will be significantly impaired when wet. A testresult that does not indicate solubility or dispersibility does notnecessarily ensure that the bonding ability will be sat

、isfactorywhen wet or that the performance of the box closure will besatisfactory when wet. Package performance testing describedin the water resistance section of Practice D1974 is useful tofurther investigate the effects of water on package and closurefunctions.6. 16、 water shall be used for referee purposes.6.7 Dispensing System, as required, when adhesives are tobe tested.6.8 Specimen Marking Device, such as a pencil or a penwith water resistant ink.6.9 Paper or Paperboard, when adhesives are to be tested, which has the ability to remain intact for at least 24

、h of waterimmersion. The approximate size shall be 10 3 10 in.250 3 250 mm.7. Test Specimens7.1 Samples of tape and adhesives shall be representative ofthe items under investigation.NOTE 1Water resistance is a property that is relatively constant for agiven formulation of tape and adhesive. This typ

、e of testing is usuallyconducted only for design qualification or first article of manufacture, noton a periodic or lot-by-lot basis.8. Procedures8.1 Procedure ATape:8.1.1 Obtain three samples of tape, each with an approxi-mate area of 12 in.27500 mm2. Dry each specimen in anoven at 221 6 9F 105 6 5

、C for 2 h. Weigh each specimento the nearest 0.00035 oz. 1 mg immediately after removalfrom the oven; weighing procedures in Practice D644 arerecommended for referee purposes. Place specimens in acontainer with at least 1 qt 1 L of water at 73.4 6 4F 23 62C. Hold specimens under water by a stainless

、 steel screen orby other means that allow circulation of water to all surfaces ofthe specimens but will not disrupt the adhesive surface. Keepspecimens under water at 73.4 6 4F 23 6 2C for 25 6 1h. Remove from water and repeat the drying and weighingoperations.8.1.2 Calculate the percentage water so

、luble or dispersiblecomponents as follows:% loss 5 MI2 MF!/MI# 3 100 (1)where:MI= mass of oven-dried tape before water submersion, andMF= mass of oven-dried tape after water submersion.8.1.3 The test result shall be calculated as the arithmeticmean of the three specimens.8.1.4 InterpretationA maximum

、 acceptable percentageloss may be specified in a contract or specification. It isgenerally accepted that a result of up to 2 % loss of mass couldbe attributed to incidental materials in the tape and experimen-tal variation. A result of over 2 % loss indicates that functionalcomponents of the tape ar

、e removed by water.8.2 Procedure BAdhesives:8.2.1 Mark six paper samples for identification purposes.Pick three of the six samples. Dry each specimen in an oven at221 6 9F 105 6 5C for 2 h. Weigh each specimen to thenearest 0.00035 oz. 1 mg immediately after removal from theoven; weighing procedures

、 in Practice D644 are recommendedfor referee purposes. Place specimens in a container with atleast 1 qt 1 L of water at 73.4 6 4F 23 6 2C. Holdspecimens under water by a stainless steel screen or by othermeans that allow circulation of water to all surfaces of thespecimens but will not disrupt the s

Removefrom water and repeat the drying and weighing operations.8.2.2 Calculate the percentage water soluble or dispersiblecomponents (SP) in the paper (without adhesive) as follows:SP% 5 MI2 MF!/MI# 3 100 (2)where:MI= mass of oven-

、dried paper before water submersion, andMF= mass of oven-dried paper after water submersion.Average the results from the three sheets of paper.8.2.3 Oven dry and weigh the other three paper samples aspreviously described. Apply generous amounts of adhesiveover the paper in a manner similar to that us

、ng the percentage lost by the paper(SP). This net test result is the percent of water soluble ordispersible components in the adhesive.8.2.7 InterpretationA maximum acceptable percentageloss may be specified in a contract or specification. It isgenerally accepted that a result of up to 2 % loss of m

、ass couldbe attributed to incidental materials in the adhesive andexperimental variation. A result of over 2 % loss indicates thatfunctional components of the adhesive are removed by water.9.
