、Designation: D5586/D5586M 10Standard Tablesof Body Measurements for Women Aged 55 and Older(All Figure Types)1,2This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5586/D5586M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the y

、ear of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThese tables were developed from original research conducted by Reich and Goldsberry3at theUniversity of Arizon

、a in 1993. The study included 6786 subjects represented geographically by 38states. Subjects were measured in 58 body locations, 45 of which duplicated measurements publishedby the U.S. Department of Commerce as PS 42-702based on research conducted in 1942 by OBrienand Shelton4including 1970 revisio

、ns. The 13 additional measurements provided in the 1993 technicalreport further depict physiological changes that occur in the older female figure. The PS 42-70 data, represented by only 2 % of older women, continues to be used as a baseline for measurements andproportions for all adult women in the

、domestic sizing system. These tables reflect the proportions andmaturity patterns of women aged 55 and older, not currently represented in adult female figure typesand size categories of the domestic sizing system now in use. Further description of this marketsegment and consumer sizing issues are o

、utlined by Goldsberry.51. Scope1.1 This document represents research methodology and thetables represent charted data from subjects. Some terminologyis specific to the research. The data represent the first bodymeasurements ever taken of women aged 55 and older and isnot a standard of average curren

、t apparel industry practices asrepresented in all other sizing standards.1.2 These tables list body measurements of adult womenage 55 and over. The body measurements tables can be used asa baseline in designing apparel for adult women in this agegroup, taking into account such factors as fabric type

、, desiredease of body movement, styling, and fit.1.3 Measurement tables correspond to the figure types andnumerical size designations in the PS 42-70 database. Untilbody measurements of all adult women are updated, companieswill have to analyze the older customers differences by bodymeasurements and

、 proportions instead of hang tag numbers, and adapt them to currently marketed sizes and figure types.Companies especially affected are those who are today usingsmaller numbered hang tag designations, who offer mainly S,M, and L sizes, or who have adjusted their charts from the PS42-70 database to re

The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningva

Significance and Use4.1 The use of the body measurement information given inTables 1-7 will assist manufacturers in developing patterns andgarments consistent with the current anthropometric character-istics of the older adult female population. This practice shouldin turn reduce or

、minimize current consumer confusion anddissatisfaction related to apparel sizing. (Also refer to D5585and ISO 3635-1981 and ISO 8559.)4.2 As an aid in using Tables 1-7, Table 8 is provided as aguide for comparison on only the Misses Figure Type sizelabels and body proportions in D5586 (55 and older

、womenMisses Figure TypeTable 4) with the Misses current bestpractices (D5585). Document D5586 includes measurementcharts for all figure types contained in the PS-42-70 database towhich the 55 and older database (D5586) was compared. Table8 can further assist designers, product develop managers andpa

、tternmakers in using this document who are designingapparel for the older woman consumer market segment.4.3 The importance of Table 8 is to emphasize that over theyears since the PS-42-70 measurement database was published, sets of measurement proportions have been assigned increas-ingly smaller size

、 label designations. Thus, proportion com-parisons of only size labeling cannot be directly made to thosecurrently used when referencing the D5586 tables. In Table 8,it is evident that the D5585 Misses Figure type size labelnumbers are approximately four sizes smaller than thoseassigned to D5586 Tab

、le 4 which references the same generalproportions as in the PS-42-70 database. Thus, when convert-ing data from all figure types in D5586, refer to the generalmeasurement proportions, and not the designated size labelwhen developing and grading patterns.4.4 Measurements appearing in the D5586 tables

、 withoutcomparable measurements in D5585 (current Misses bestpractices data) represent additional body measurements takenfor the D5586 database for older women. Also, comparabledata were not available in extremely small and large sizes forcomparison. All measurements in Table 8 are inches only.7With
