3、 258 and 4-in. diametersteel or cast iron shear plates used in the fabrication ofconnections in wood constructions. The referencing of thisspecification in design, construction, and purchase order docu-ments gives the using parties ensurance that the shear plates tobe used in an assembly meet minimu

4、m materials qualitystandards and that dimensions for fabrication and finish can berelied on to ensure connection performance. This specificationprovides regulatory agencies with a set of standards by whichto judge the acceptability of shear plates encountered in thefield and in fabricators shops.1.2

Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 shear plateA round, cast, or stamped disk-likeload-transfer device having a flat base and a perimeter bearingrim protruding in one direction normal to the base, with a holepassing through the center of the disk to accommodate anattachment

9、bolt or lag screw.3.1.1.1 DiscussionThe fastener hole at the center mayhave an additional bearing hub. If a bearing hub is present itprojects in the same direction as the bearing rim. A shear plateis installed into one or more faces of a piece of wood to transfershear forces between the member conta

10、ining the shear plate orplates and adjacent members which may be of wood or steel.This shear transfer is accomplished through the bolt or lagscrew.4. Classification4.1 This specification covers the two basic diameters ofmetal shear plates commonly used in North American timberconstruction258 in. (66

11、.7-mm) diameter stamped steel ormalleable cast iron, and 4-in. (102.1-mm) diameter malleablecast iron. The use of these shear plates is covered in theNational Design Specification for Wood Construction4andother wood design documents.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 General:5.1.1 Cast iron shear plate

12、s shall be free from any castingdefects such as voids, irregular holes or sharp burrs greaterthan 0.03 in. 16、s shall beground smooth or otherwise removed.5.1.2 Shear plates shall be permanently marked with themanufacturers name or a readily recognizable logo, or both;the number of this ASTM standard; the country of origin; andthe model number, if applicable. Such marking may be on anynonbearing surface and

17、 shall be recessed into the device so asnot to interfere with installation or weaken the finished shearplate.5.1.3 Shear plates shall have two diametrically opposedholes which can be used to nail-attach the plate in the piece ofwood in which it is installed to facilitate shipping and handlingwithout

18、 dislodging of the plate. See Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 3.5.1.4 Casting draft on the rim and on the hub, if present, ofcast iron shear plates shall be minimal and as shown tofacilitate removal from the mold without diminishing strengthor creating a poor fit into cutterhead grooves (see Fig. 2 andFig.

19、 3).5.1.5 Central bolt or lag screw holes shall be of the diametershown and have uniformly straight sides to promote fullbearing (see Fig. 1, Fig. 2 , and Fig. 3).5.1.6 Shear plates may be furnished with or without galva-nization depending on the exposure of the installed device.Galvanization shall

20、conform to Specification A653/A653M orSpecification A924/A924M for stamped steel shear plates orSpecification A153/A153M for cast iron shear plates.5.1.7 Since slight variations in some dimensions arepermitted, each shear plate manufacturer shall have availablethe special groove cutting tools necess

21、ary to properly install thestandard shear plates of his manufacture.5.1.8 Overall fit and finish shall be uniform.5.2 258-in. Diameter Stamped Steel Shear Plates:5.2.1 Shear plates shall be stamped from SpecificationA570/A570M or AISI/SAE No. 1010 carbon steel.5.2.2 The geometry and dimensions of th

27、stratedthe need for an ASTM standard specification for metal shearplate manufacture. Despite the fact that stamped steel and castiron shear plates have been used in timber construction inNorthAmerica since the 1930s, no consensus standard exists toensure that metal shear plates in the marketplace ar

28、e of uniformsize and quality and can be counted on to perform as intended.This specification is based on the manufacturing standards ofseveral North American shear plate producers that have proventhe quality and reliability of their products over time.NOTE 1Make from Specification A47/A47M, Grade 32
