A number in parentheses in

Scope*1.1 This specification covers the classification of sulfoneplastics suitable for injection molding and extrusion.1.2 The properties included in this specification

3、 are thoserequired to identify the compositions covered. Other require-ments necessary to identify particular characteristics importantto specialized applications are to be specified by using thesuffixes in Section 5. See Guide D 5740.1.3 This specification is intended to be a means of callingout su

4、lfone plastics used in the fabrication of end items orparts. Material selection can be made by those having expertisein the plastics field only after careful consideration of thedesign and the performance required of the part, the environ-ment to which it will be exposed, the fabrication process to

5、beemployed, the cost involved, and the inherent properties of thematerial other than those covered by this specification.1.4 Sulfone polymers, being thermoplastic, are reprocess-able and recyclable. This specification allows for the use ofthose sulfone polymer materials, provided that any specificre

Terminology3.1 Except for terms defined below, the terminology used inthis specification is i

17、n accordance with Terminologies D 883and D 1600.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 sulfone plastics, nplastics based on any of variousaromatic polymers which contain diphenyl sulfone in thebackbone of the repeating unit of the molecule.3.2.1.1 DiscussionAll of the sulfone polym

18、ers which areunder this specification contain ether oxygen which is anecessary component of the polymers as in the diphenylsulfone moiety. Examples of moieties which can be part of thebackbone of the repeating unit, in addition to diphenyl sulfone,are diphenyl isopropylidene, and biphenyl. Blends of

19、 thesepolymers can exist as well as co- and ter-polymers. Commer-cial polymers that are members of this class of thermoplasticsinclude polysulfone (PSU), polyether sulfone (PESU), andpolyphenylsulfone (PPSU) (see Fig. 1).4. Classification4.1 Unreinforced sulfone plastics are classified into groupsin

20、 accordance with their composition. These groups are subdi-vided into classes and grades as shown in Table SP.NOTE 3An example of this designation system is given below. Thedesignation SP0213 indicates the following:SP = sulfone plastics as defined in Section 3,02 (Group) = polyether sulfone, as def

21、ined in Terminology D 1600,1 (Class) = high temperature, and3 (Grade) = requirements given in Table SP.4.1.1 To facilitate incorporation of future or special materi-als the “Other” category for group (00), class (0), and grade (0)is shown in Table SP. The basic properties of these materialscan be ob

22、tained from Table A as they apply.4.2 Reinforced, filled, and lubricated versions of sulfoneplastics that are in Table SP are classified in accordance withTables SP and A. Table SP is used to specify the group ofsulfone plastics and Table A is used to specify the propertyrequirements after the addit

23、ion of reinforcements, pigments,fillers, or lubricants at the nominal level indicated (see 4.2.1).4.2.1 Reinforcements and Additive MaterialsA symbol(single-letter) is used for the major reinforcement or combina-tion, or both, along with two numbers which indicate thepercentage of addition by mass w

The types and percentages of reinforcements and additivesshould be shown on the suppliers technical data sheet unless they areproprietary in nature. If necessary, additional c

26、allout of these reinforce-ment and additives can be accomplished by use of the suffix part of thesystem (see Section 5).4.2.2 Specific requirements for reinforcement, filled, orlubricated sulfone plastics shall be shown by a six-characterdesignation. The designation will consist of the letter “A” an

27、dthe five digits comprising the cell numbers for propertyrequirements in the order as they appear in Table A.4.2.2.1 Although the values listed are necessary to includethe range of properties available in existing materials, this doesnot imply that every possible combination of the propertiesexists

28、or can be obtained.4.2.3 When the grade of the basic material is not known, oris not important, the “0” grade shall be used for the reinforcedmaterials in this system.NOTE 5An example of this classification for a reinforced sulfoneplastics material is given as follows. The designation SP0210G30A4346

29、0would have the following material requirements:SP0210 = poly(ether sulfone) from Table SP,G30 = glass reinforced at the 30 % nominal level,A = Table A property requirements,4 = tensile strength, 95 MPa min,3 = flexural modulus, 4.5 GPa min,4 = Izod impact, 50 J/m min,6 = deflection temperature, 200

Suffixes5.1 When additional requirements are needed for the mate-rials covered in this specification that are not covered in TablesSP or A, then those requirements shall be designated throughthe use of suffixes.5.1.1 A list of suitabl

32、e suffixes are found in Table 3 ofClassification D 4000.5.2 Flammability callouts were changed in 2007. Therefore,callouts written before 2007 are different from those written in2007 and later.5.2.1 If the requirements for the poly(ether sulfone) materialin 4.2.3 also included flammability requireme

General Requirements6.1 Basic requirements from the property table (Table SP)or cell table (TableA) are always in effect unless superseded byspecific suffix requirements, which always take precedence.Properties in Table A supersede prope

36、rties in Table SP.6.2 The plastics composition shall be uniform and shallconform to the requirements specified herein.7. Detail Requirements7.1 The materials shall conform to the respective require-ments of Tables SP, A, and the suffix as they apply.7.2 For purposes of determining conformance, all s

37、pecifiedlimits for a specification (line callout) based on this classifica-tion system are absolute limits, as defined in Practice E29.7.2.1 With the absolute method, an observed value or acalculated value is not rounded, but is to be compared directlywith the limiting value. Conformance or nonconfo

38、rmance isbased on this comparison.8. Sampling8.1 Sampling shall be statistically adequate to satisfy therequirements of 12.4.8.2 A batch or lot shall be defined as a unit of manufactureas prepared for shipment and is permitted to consist of a blendof two or more production runs.9. Specimen Preparati

39、on9.1 The test specimens shall be prepared by injectionmolding process in accordance with Practice D 3641. Recom-mended processing conditions are shown in Table 1.9.2 Before molding, the material shall be dried to a moisturelevel of no more than 0.05 % as determined by test methodsdescribed in Test

40、Method D 6869.10. Conditioning10.1 Test specimens shall be conditioned in the standardlaboratory atmosphere in accordance with Procedure A ofPractice D 618 for a minimum of 4 h before performing therequired tests.10.2 Conduct those tests influenced by ambient conditionsin the standard laboratory atm

41、osphere of 23 6 2C and 50 610 % relative humidity.11. Test Methods11.1 Determine the properties enumerated in this specifica-tion by means of Test Methods D 256, D 638, D 648, D 790,D 792, D 1238, and D 5630.11.1.1 The number of tests shall be consistent with therequirements of Section 8 and 12.4.11

42、.1.2 All test specimens shall be 3.2 by 12.7 mm, unlessotherwise specified.11.1.3 Flow RateIn accordance with Test Method D 1238,using the following conditions:11.1.3.1 PSU343C and 2.16 Kg load,11.1.3.2 PESU380C and 2.16 Kg load, or 360C and 10Kg load,11.1.3.3 PPSU365C and 5.00 Kg load, and11.1.3.4

Inspection and Certification12.1 Certification of the material supplied with reference toa specification based on this specification shall be for conform-ance to the requirements specified herein.12.2 Lot acceptance inspection sh
